Back For Some Sunday Linkage

by , under Big East, Blogs with Balls, College Gameday, Erin Andrews, ESPN, ESPN Films, Fox NFL Sunday, Fox Sports, Joe Buck, MLB, MLB Network, Newspapers, Raycom, SEC, TV Ratings, Univision

Ok, back from New York after attending “Blogs with Balls 4″ at the Bloomberg world headquarters on Lexington Avenue. I’ll have a recap of the event later today. But I’ll give you some links since I was unable to blog yesterday.

Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News says MLB Network has signed several cable providers for its new Video on Demand service.

Mike writes that Univision has signed former NBC Sports Executive Producer David Neal as its head of sports production.

At the Indiana University National Sports Journalism Center, Eric Deggans from the St. Petersburg Times writes that Fox made a huge mistake by making up Chicago Tribune headlines and portraying them as real.

SportsGrid has Fox Sports’ official apology made during Fox NFL Sunday.

Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.com says College GameDay heads to Wisconsin this Saturday.

A couple of screengrabs from Timothy Burke at his Mocksession site. First, here’s Erin Andrews wearing a coonskin cap on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay.

And we have a look at the monsoon in Charlotte that caused the Bank of America Stadium field to become a quagmire during the Jacksonville-Carolina game.

At Sporting Madness, Andrew Bucholz recaps one of the Blogs with Balls 4 panels during which ABC’s Josh Elliot did not have some nice things to say about his former employer, ESPN.

Brandon Costa of Sports Video Group looks at Raycom’s new HD production truck.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post decries the personal seat license.

Dick Weiss of the New York Daily News notes that the Big East’s rejection of a huge ESPN offer for TV rights paved the way for Pittsburgh and Syracuse to leave the conference.

Jim Wiliams of the Washington Examiner writes that this isn’t the first time the SEC was thinking expansion of the conference.

Mel Bracht of the Daily Oklahoman rates the top 5 Sooner State announcing teams.

Nina Metz of the Chicago Tribune reviews the ESPN Films documentary on the Steve Bartman incident from 2003.

David Haugh of the Tribune has Fox’s Joe Buck denying that Bears QB Jay Cutler is being singled out by the networks for criticism.

The Toronto Sports Media Blog says a noted Toronto Globe and Mail columnist may be leaving for a TV career.

Sports Media Watch has some various ratings news and notes.

SMW has a few more news and notes.

And that’s where I’ll end it for now.

The ACC and Raycom Sports Team Up To Launch ACC Vault of Classic Basketball Games

by , under ACC, Raycom

Now this is something I like. The ACC and media partner Raycom have announced that they have set up a new vault at TheACC.com which has a vast archive of classic basketball games including ACC Tournament games dating back to 1983. This means you can see great players like Michael Jordan when he was at North Carolina, the late Len Bias of Maryland, Grant Hill and Christan Laettner of Duke, Kenny Anderson of Georgia Tech and so much more. As a college basketball fan and of the ACC in particular, this is right up my alley.

Here’s the press release.

The Atlantic Coast Conference, Raycom Sports and Thought Equity Motion Launch
Video-Powered ACC Vault with Classic Men’s Basketball Games
Website Features Full-Length ACC Men’s Basketball Games and Allows Fans to Search, Share and Comment on Their Favorite Moments
DENVER, Dec. 15, 2010—The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Raycom Sports  announced today the launch of the ACC Vault (www.theACC.com/vault), an online video archive of full-length, classic Tournament and regular season men’s basketball games from all 12 ACC member institutions. With a comprehensive and easy to navigate design, the ACC Vault will allow fans to access and view many of the greatest television moments in ACC Basketball history. The ACC Vault is powered by Thought Equity Motion, a leading provider of video platform and rights development services.
The ACC Vault features video dating back to 1983, including the ACC Tournament Championship Game from every year. The games have been coded within the ACC Vault in play-by-play detail, enabling fans to jump to specific game moments, view the video, and share via Facebook, Twitter, email and other social channels. Users can also explore categories such as great blocks, great finishes, and ACC Stars. In addition to games, the Vault includes special features, such as classic interviews with iconic coaches and players. After launch, a selection of “Instant Classic” games from the 2010-11 ACC Men’s Basketball Season will be added to the site.
“This is another exciting initiative for the ACC and we’re pleased to give fans a new way to experience our rich ACC Basketball history,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “The ACC Vault ties our rich collection of great games to the current season’s action and presents our tradition of excellence in an innovative way that will be a resource for fans, media, bloggers and our member institutions.”
The ACC Vault includes a Video Media Guide & Link Database, which provides direct URLs to every moment within the site. Sports writers and bloggers can access this database and link to relevant moments in articles and blogs.
“With the launch of the ACC Vault, Raycom Sports and the Atlantic Coast Conference are increasing fan engagement and building new traffic to our digital properties around some of the most timeless moments in ACC Basketball History,” stated Colin Smith, Vice-President of Distribution & New Media for Raycom Sports. “Raycom Sports and the ACC are committed to utilizing cutting edge technologies in order to deliver engaging experiences for ACC fans. Our goal is to ultimately make the ACC Vault the Official video resource guide of ACC Basketball.”
The ACC Vault’s extensive metadata enables fans to search for and share exact moments within games, for example:
“With the launch of the ACC Vault we’re leveraging rich metadata and delivery tools to drive new sponsor value and extend the ‘life’ of the men’s basketball season to connect to fan interest year-round,” said Kevin Schaff, CEO & Founder of Thought Equity Motion.
To explore the ACC Vault, visit www.theACC.com/vault. To learn more about Thought Equity Motion’s technology that powers the ACC Vault, visit http://platform.thoughtequity.com/acc_vault.

This is great stuff. I’m looking forward to exploring the archives.

Raycom Rebrands Its Syndicated ACC Package As "ACC Network"

by , under ACC, ACC Network, Raycom

This weekend, Raycom Sports will branded its syndicated ACC package as “The ACC Network”. While a new contract with the ACC doesn’t begin until next season, ESPN, Raycom and conference officials agreed that Raycom could rebrand this year to get a jump start. It means all football and basketball games on Raycom will fall under the ACC Network brand. We have the press release from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Raycom.

Raycom Sports’ Syndicated ACC Football and Basketball Telecasts Will Feature ACC Network Brand

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Raycom Sports and the Atlantic Coast Conference today announced that beginning this season, the Raycom Sports Regional Syndicated package of Atlantic Coast Conference football and basketball telecasts will be branded as the ACC Network. The new marketing initiative will feature ACC Network graphics and designations beginning with the first game this year, the Duke at Wake Forest telecast on Saturday, September 11th.

The ACC Network branding was part of the new television rights agreements between the ACC, Raycom Sports and ESPN that begins with the 2011 Football season. Raycom Sports and the Conference moved to begin the branding during the final year of the existing contract.

“Beginning to brand the ACC Network with the start of the first conference football game made great sense for our league, member schools, fans and partners,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “It’s a great tribute to Raycom that we’re able to roll out this initiative a year before the new contract begins.”

“The establishment of the ACC Network brand was a natural step, given our longstanding syndication exclusivity with the Atlantic Coast Conference,” said Jimmy Rayburn, vice-president of operations for Raycom Sports. “Moving forward with our new rights agreement, we were already preparing the transition. But with the volume of media coverage already surrounding the conference’s new television rights agreement, it made perfect sense to capitalize on the public’s attention now with the ACC Network designation.”

The Atlantic Coast Conference, now in its 58th year of competition, is one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate athletics conferences in the country. The ACC sponsors competition in 25 sports for its 12 member institutions: Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have captured 120 national team championships and 221 individual national championships. For more information on the ACC and its 12 member institutions go to:www.theACC.com.

Raycom Sports is a leading independent sports sales & marketing, syndication, event management and production firm. Raycom is the current television rightsholder of ACC men’s basketball and syndicated football telecasts. Raycom Sports’ parent company Raycom Media, located in Montgomery, AL, owns and operates 39 television stations covering over 12 percent of the United States across 18 states. For more information, please go to: www.raycomsports.com.

So ACC fans have a year to get used to see ACC Network logos rather than the Raycom bug.

Best Announcers of All-Time

by , under 7 Network, ABC Sports, BBC Sport, Boxing, CBS Sports, College Baseball, College Football, ESPN, ESPN2, MLB, NBA, NBC Sports, NFL, NHL, Raycom, Tennis, Turner Sports

Today through Saturday, I’ll be scarce on the blog. My sister is getting married and I’m not going to be blogging much. In fact, I won’t blogging at all. The Viewing Picks and the posts you’ll see for the next three days have been done ahead of time. But I don’t want to lose you the loyal reader so I’m going to provide as much original content as possible so you’ll have these to tie you over until I return, most likely on Monday.

Even if news breaks, I won’t be able to blog, but know that I’ll be thinking of you while I’m gone.

This post is going to list the best announcers of all-time. I’m going to list these by sport, then do them by play-by-play and analysts. In some cases, I’ll also list local announcers. Of course, you’ll disagree with me because that’s what people do on the internet. And you can debate away.

Let’s start with the lists and go from there.

BASEBALL

Best Play-by-Play
1. Vin Scully – Los Angeles Dodgers/NBC Sports/CBS Radio
2. Ernie Harwell – Detroit Tigers/California Angels/CBS Radio
3. Curt Gowdy – Boston Red Sox/NBC Sports/CBS Radio
4. Jack Buck – St. Louis Cardinals/CBS Radio/CBS Sports
5. Jon Miller – Boston Red Sox/Baltimore Orioles/San Francisco Giants/ESPN/ESPN Radio

At age 82, Vin has still got it. He doesn’t need a partner and continues to be the best baseball broadcaster. Ernie Harwell was a baseball historian and could weave tales with the best. Curt Gowdy was one of the first all-around broadcasters on network TV, calling baseball, football, basketball and the Olympics. Jack Buck’s call of Kirk Gibson’s home run in the 1988 World Series is one of the most iconic calls in the history of the sport. Jon Miller is one of the best announcers of his generation.

Best Analysts
1. Tony Kubek – NBC Sports/TSN/MSG Network
2. Don Drysdale – California Angels/ABC Sports
3. Jim Palmer – ABC Sports/MASN
4. Jerry Remy – NESN
5. Jim Kaat – CBS Sports/MSG Network/YES/MLB Network

Tony Kubek was the best network analyst, bar none. Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan don’t even come close and don’t hold candles to Tony. And even in the 1990′s some thirty years being removed from the game, Kubek continued to teach viewers on the game. Don Drysdale gave great insights on pitching. Jim Palmer was the better and less verbose half of the ABC analysts teamed with Al Michaels. Jerry Remy is one of the best local analysts and could be on the networks if he so chose. And Jim Kaat continues to be an excellent analyst.

Best Local TV/Radio Teams
1. Harry Kalas/Richie Ashburn/Andy Musser/Chris Wheeler – Philadelphia Phillies
2. Ned Martin/Jim Woods – Boston Red Sox
3. Skip Caray/Pete Van Wieren/Ernie Johnson, Sr./Don Sutton – Atlanta Braves
4. Ernie Harwell/Paul Carey – Detroit Tigers
5. Jon Miller/Fred Manfra – Baltimore Orioles
6. Sean McDonough/Jerry Remy – Boston Red Sox
7. Marty Brennaman/Joe Nuxhall – Cincinnati Reds
8. Chuck Thompson/Bill O’Donnell – Baltimore Orioles
9. Harry Caray/Steve Stone – Chicago Cubs
10. Dick Enberg/Don Drysdale – California Angels

I’ve listened to a lot of baseball growing up and one of my thrills was to find the 50,000 watt AM stations carrying baseball. While I loved the Red Sox, I always enjoyed listening to the Phillies team on WCAU. Ned Martin and Jim Woods were the best radio broadcasters the Red Sox have ever had. Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren were comfortable listens on Braves games on TBS.

Boxing

Play-by-play
1. Howard Cosell – ABC Sports
2. Jim Lampley – HBO Sports
3. Tim Ryan – CBS Sports
4. Marv Albert – NBC Sports
5. Bob Papa – HBO Sports/Versus/ESPN/NBC Sports

Seriously, there wasn’t anyone better than Cosell calling a heavyweight championship fight. Jim Lampley is great now. Tim Ryan was tremendous doing CBS fights in the 1980′s. Many probably don’t know Marv Albert used to call a fight every Sunday on NBC SportsWorld in the 80′s. Bob Papa is a very good announcer now for HBO.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Best Play-by-play
1. Dick Enberg – NBC Sports/CBS Sports
2. Brent Musberger – CBS Sports/ESPN
3. Curt Gowdy – NBC Sports
4. Jim Nantz – CBS Sports
5. Verne Lundquist – CBS Sports

Nothing needs to be added to this list. Enberg did UCLA basketball in its heyday when the school was winning championships and went to NBC where he was teamed with Billy Packer and Al McGuire as the one of the best broadcasting tandems ever. The others on the list can speak for themselves.

Best Analyst
1. Billy Packer – Raycom/NBC Sports/CBS Sports
2. Al McGuire – NBC Sports/CBS Sports
3. Clark Kellogg – ESPN/CBS Sports
4. Quinn Buckner – CBS Sports/ESPN
5. Len Elmore – CBS Sports/ESPN

I used to love Billy Packer on the games up until the 21st Century when he seemed to become disinterested, bitter, crotchety and cranky. During his early career, he was very good in finding the nuances to college basketball and picking up trends, but he seemed to forget that in his later years. His overall body of work was good enough to be on top.

Best Local Play-by-play
1. Cawood Ledford – Kentucky
2. Woody Durham – North Carolina
3. Bob Harris – Duke
4. Paul Keels – Ohio State University
5. Gene Deckerhoff – Florida State University

I did the same for college basketball as I did for baseball, finding games on the radio. In addition, Cawood Ledford called the Final Four on radio for NBC and CBS Radio well into the 1980′s. Excellent announcer and still beloved by old school Kentucky fans. Woody Durham is a legend among Tar Heel fans.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Best Play-by-play
1. Keith Jackson – ABC Sports
2. Ron Franklin – ESPN
3. Brent Musburger – CBS Sports/ABC Sports/ESPN
4. Verne Lundquist – CBS Sports
5. Tom Hammond – NBC Sports

Keith was the best hands down. Ron Franklin is still great. Brent can spot a big story from a mile away. Uncle Verne on SEC games is as comfortable a fit as you can get.

Best Analyst
1. Frank Broyles – ABC Sports
2. Pat Haden – CBS Sports/NBC Sports
3. Gary Danielson – ABC Sports/ESPN/CBS Sports
4. Dan Fouts – ESPN
5. Ara Parseghian – ABC Sports/CBS Sports

NBA

Best Play-by-play
1. Marv Albert – NBC Sports/TNT
2. Dick Stockton – CBS Sports/TNT
3. Mike Gorman – Comcast SportsNet New England
4. Brent Musburger – CBS Sports
5. Mike Tirico – ESPN

Marv is probably the best ever at calling the NBA.

Best Analyst
1. Doug Collins – NBC Sports/TNT
2. Hubie Brown – USA Network/CBS Sports/TNT/ESPN
3. Bill Walton – NBC Sports/ESPN
4. Charles Barkley – TNT/TBS
5. Kenny Smith – TNT/TBS

NFL

Best play-by-play
1. Al Michaels – ABC Sports/NBC Sports
2. Dick Enberg – NBC Sports/CBS Sports
3. Pat Summerall – CBS Sports/Fox Sports
4. Charlie Jones – ABC Sports/NBC Sports
5. Don Criqui – NBC Sports/CBS Sports

Al Michaels is another announcer who can call multiple sports well, except for the NBA which he seemingly didn’t care for. But the NFL has become his calling and he’s the best.

Best Analyst
1. John Madden – CBS Sports/ABC Sports/NBC Sports
2. Hank Stram – CBS Sports/CBS Radio
3. Merlin Olsen – NBC Sports/CBS Sports
4. Dan Dierdorf – ABC Sports/CBS Sports
5. Phil Simms – ESPN/NBC Sports/CBS Sports

Seriously, could anyone be ranked over Madden?

NHL

Best Play-by-play
1. Mike Emrick – ESPN/NBC Sports
2. Dan Kelly – CBS Sports/USA Network
3. Bob Cole – CBC
4. Chris Cuthbert – CBC/NBC Sports/TSN
5. Jiggs MacDonald – SportsChannel America

For the longest time, I felt the late Dan Kelly was the best in calling hockey (I never heard Foster Hewitt), but Mike Emrick has surpassed him in this decade. Four out of the five I’ve listed have been honored with Foster Hewitt Memorial Award by the Hockey Hall of Fame and deservedly so. Cuthbert should be soon.

Best Analyst
1. John Davidson – MSG Network/Fox Sports/ESPN/NBC Sports/Versus
2. Harry Neale – CBC
3. Ed Olcyzk – NBC Sports
4. Mickey Redmond – CBC/Fox Sports Detroit
5. Don Cherry – CBC

JD’s got into the Hall of Fame last year and I’m surprised it took that long. Harry Neale was very good until his later years, but is still doing decently for MSG Buffalo on Sabres games.

Best Local Play-by-play
1. Bob Wilson – Boston Bruins
2. Ron Weber – Washington Capitals
3. Chuck Kaiton – Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes
4. Mike Lange – Pittsburgh Penguins
5. Pat Foley – Chicago Blackhawks

Again, four of out of five here are in the Hockey Hall of Fame, Weber being the most recent this year. Pat Foley should be honored. Bob Wilson really gave me my love for hockey while calling Bruins games. Ron Weber educated fans on hockey in DC. Chuck Kaiton had to endure some really bad teams in Hartford before finally calling a Stanley Cup in Carolina. Only Mike Lange can say, “You can scratch my back with a hacksaw,” or “Lord Stanley, Lord Stanley, give me the brandy,” or “Tell Granny the bingo game is over.” Pat Foley is back with the Blackhawks after being exiled to the AHL Wolves. He should be in the Hall of Fame too.

TENNIS

Best Play-by-play
1. Dick Enberg – NBC Sports/CBS Sports/ESPN2
2. Jim Simpson – NBC Sports/ESPN
3. Tim Ryan – NBC Sports/CBS Sports
4. Cliff Drysdale – ESPN
5. Pat Summerall – CBS Sports

Best Analyst
1. John McEnroe – USA Network/NBC Sports/CBS Sports/ESPN2/7 Network/BBC Sport
2. Mary Carillo – USA Network/CBS Sports/NBC Sports/ESPN2
3. Bud Collins – NBC Sports/ESPN2/Tennis Channel
4. Tracy Austin – USA Network/7 Network/BBC Sport
5. Tony Trabert – CBS Sports

HOSTS

1. Bob Costas – NBC Sports/HBO Sports/MLB Network
2. Jim McKay – ABC Sports
3. Brent Musburger – CBS Sports/ABC Sports/ESPN
4. Ernie Johnson, Jr. – Turner Sports
5. James Brown – Fox Sports/CBS Sports
6. Howard Cosell – ABC Sports

So that will do it for this set of lists. Coming up later today, the Most Influential Sports Series of All-Time.

I take the list and cull it down to the major networks and syndicators, but give credit to the site for compiling the list.

Beginning of the Workweek Links

by , under ACC, Bat Shit Crazy, CBS Sports, Deadspin, ESPN, Jay the Rat, MLB Network, NBC Sports, NESN, NFL, NHL, Olympics, PGA Tour, Raycom, Super Bowl, Technical Difficulties, TSN, WEEI

We have lots of material on this first real workday of 2009.

We begin with David Scott of Boston Sports Media Watch who jumped on NESN for botching the end of the Boston College-North Carolina game.

The lovely Jessica Heslam of the Boston Herald has the tepid NESN explanation of what happened.

Jessica reports that WEEI has signed Big Show blowhard Glenn Ordway to a new contract.

We now have the arrival of Jay The Rat on the internet. Tom Mantzouranis of AOL Fanhouse reports that Jay Mariotti along with the lovely Lisa Olson, formerly of the New York Daily news and Kevin Blackstone will be writing for the site.

Michael Hiestand of USA Today writes that CBS Sports has signed Bill Cowher to a contract extension for 2009. Michael says former Detroit Lions GM Matt Millen could return to TV full-time, especially after his performance this past weekend on NBC.

Newsday’s Neil writes that NBC plans to have Millen join its Super Bowl coverage.

Now let’s go to some stories from the Sports Business Journal. The SBJ has an in-depth section on college sports media. The following stories are from that section.

First, John Ourand talks about ESPN and CBS trying to make their numbers work for their new college football contracts.

John writes that regional sports networks are also trying to stay ahead of the changing landscape in college sports.

Michael Smith discusses how colleges are trying to manage their web content.

Michael looks at how Raycom Sports is fighting to keep the rights to the ACC after losing the SEC syndication rights to ESPN.

And the SBJ lists the people to watch in college sports media.

Now to stories from this week’s SBJ issue.

Tripp Mickle and John Ourand give us the major players in the Olympics US TV rights negotiations.

Tripp says the United States Olympic Committee is going into overdrive to sell sponsorships for the 2009-2012 period.

John Ourand has some predictions for the sports media in 2009.

Don Muret profiles the architect who helps to fix sports stadium projects when they go awry.

There’s the Terrible Towel and now Terry Lefton says the Super Bowl gets a “trophy towel”.

Eric Fisher says the NFL is now marketing high definition online game replays.

Jon Show says golfer Vijay Singh has agred to make Stanford Financial the dominant logo on his bag and clothing.

Plenty of links from the SBJ and thanks to Bill McGrath for letting me know what stories are available each week. It’s greatly appreciated.

The New York Post’s Phil Mushnick feels the NFL Wild Card games were overloaded with statistics and useless replays. This is the first time in months that I actually agree with Mushie.

The Baltimore Sun’s Ray Frager shares some notes that he scribbled during the Ravens-Dolphins game yesterday. And Ray says Baltimore watched the NFL playoffs even when the Ravens weren’t involved.

Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times reviews the weekend in TV sports.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News wonders why it took so long for Bill Cowher to announce that he’s not going to coach in 2009. Barry also looks at the weekend in the NFL. Finally, Barry sees Morning News colleague Tim Colishaw taking a sports radio gig.

Ed Sherman of Crain’s Chicago Business talks about the ratings success of the NHL Winter Classic. And Ed talks about Jay Mariotti joining AOL Fanhouse.

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune says the MLB Network shows some early promise.

Leonna Heuring of the Sikeston (MO) Standard-Democrat writes that a local native who competed for the Miss USA title and now a model, will appear in a Super Bowl ad.

Dusty Saunders of the Rocky Mountain News says the MLB Network is off to a “perfect” start.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced that Ted Robinson will become its radio voice starting next season.

William Houston of the Toronto Globe and Mail writes that the death of a junior hockey player has sparked debate among Canada’s hockey analysts.

Chris Zelkovich of the Toronto Star says TSN’s Gord Miller and Pierre McGuire went a bit overboard with the praise at the end of the Canada-Russia game during the World Junior Hockey Championships.

Thanks to the Big Lead for the following links. Apparently, Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports.com has lost his mind, attacking fellow writers and wanting someone to police us sports bloggers like AJ Daulerio of Deadspin. Of course, Deadspin reponds.

This will do it for now. More later.

Ok, I have yet to leave for New York, but I’m about to so I’ll give you a few links as I eat breakfast and dash out the door.

The Friday Megalinks …. At Night

by , under 3-D, Big 12, Brent Musberger, CBC, CBS Sports, Dick Vitale, ESPN, HBO, MASN, MLB Network, NFL, NFL Network, NHL, Raycom, Rich Eisen, SEC, Sports Talk Radio, TSN, TV Ratings, YES

Due to me being all over the place today, Southern Rhode Island, Northern Rhode Island, Eastern Massachusetts, then Central Rhode Island, I was not able to do the megalinks during the day, so I’m doing them at night. One of these Fridays, I’ll be able to provide them to you at its regular time. And I have to get ready to go to New York for TARCon. But I’ll do the links while doing laundry and packing, I’m that loyal to you, my readers.

So we begin as always with the Weekend Viewing Picks.

Your college football Saturday has a bunch of conference championships including the two biggies, the SEC Championship involving Alabama and Florida (CBS, 4 p.m.) and the Big 12 Championship which has Missouri and Oklahoma (ABC, 8 p.m.). The winner of the SEC Championship will most likely advance to the BCS Championship game on January 8. Most of the country is rooting for Missouri to correct an injustice in the last BCS poll when the Sooners leapfrogged over Texas. But the most important game is of course, Army vs. Navy which kicks off the day on CBS at noon. You can check out the national viewing schedule in the very last College Football Viewing Picks of the season. When all the dust is settled, Fox has the BCS Selection Show, Sunday night at 8.

The NFL has a full schedule of games for Week 14 including six, count ‘em six late games, four regional games on CBS and two on Fox. The feature late game will be Dallas and Pittsburgh on Fox at 4:15 p.m. On Sunday night, NBC has the Washington Redskins taking on the Baltimore Ravens. Check out the entire schedule in the NFL Viewing Picks.

College Basketball is underway and there a lot of games this weekend. If I were home this weekend, I would focus on my University of Rhode Island Rams playing in-state rival, the Providence College Friars (Big East Network, 2 p.m., Saturday), but there’s also Duke at Michigan (ESPN, 3:30 p.m., Saturday). Take a gander at the College Basketball Viewing Picks for the weekend to see if your favorite team is playing on television.

There’s also the Oscar De La Hoya-Manny Pacquaio fight which is on HBO pay per view, Saturday night at 9.

Now to your links.

That particular post has exploded with people from all over the world checking it out. In case you don’t know, Bridget stars in “Legend of the Seeker” which is syndicated all over the world. I did not expect so many hits from Germany, South Korea and Denmark. So, welcome to everyone visiting around the globe.

Some Tuesday Links

by , under ABC, Alycia Lane, Brett Favre, Comcast, ESPN, Monday Night Football, NBA, NFL, NFL Network, NHL, Raycom, SEC, Soccer, Sports Illustrated, TV Ratings

I’ll provide some links today. I hope they don’t take long because I have a lot to do.

USA Today’s Michael Hiestand has a look at the ratings from various events over the weekend.

Over to CNBC’s Darren Rovell who reacts to the news regarding General Motors’ dropping of Tiger Woods as a sponsor. Darren writes that don’t expect Charlie Weis to be bought out at Notre Dame due to the size of the buyout and the state of the economy.

The New York Times’ Richard Sandomir writes about ESPN’s built-in advantage over the broadcast networks in bidding for sports properties.

Newsday’s Neil Best talks about the Giants and Jets becoming hot ratings properties in New York. In his blog, Neil writes that the Jets are fast becoming media darlings among the NFL analysts. Neil also notes that the Jets are the second highest rated team in Wisconsin because of the team’s QB and his connection to the Dairy State.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News lobbies for the Jets to be shown in primetime.

Roger Catlin of the Hartford Courant reports that Tony Danza becomes the new host of “The Contender”.

Regina Medina of the Philadelphia Daily News writes that former KYW TV anchor Larry Mendte made a dramatic apology to former fellow anchor Alycia Lane in court yesterday during his sentencing for hacking into her personal e-mail account.

Thanks to Laura Nachman for the link. Phil Heron of the Delaware County Daily Times writes that a Philadelphia sports anchor has revealed he’s battling prostate cancer for the third time in this decade.

Ted Hearn of Multichannel News reports that the administrative law judge assigned to the NFL Network-Comcast dispute is retiring.

Lori Van Ingen of the Lancaster (PA) Intelligencer-Journal says Comcast will distribute this Thursday’s Arizona-Eagles game to a wider area in Pennsylvania.

The Allentown Morning Call’s Keith Groller writes the Donovan McNabb benching on Sunday became fodder for the national media. And Keith calls Sports Illustrated’s excellent NBA writer Jack McCallum one of the good guys in sports journalism.

The Baltimore Sun’s Ray Frager appeals to the networks to stop speeding up NFL highlights. I agree. This is annoying.

The Sports Media Watch has some news as two writers (including Jack McCallum) have left their publications. The SMW says despite three blowouts, ABC garnered good ratings for three big college football matchups on Saturday. And the SMW says there’s a minor battle over the NBA vs. NHL.

Reuters reports that ESPN has outbid the current rights holder for the German Bundesliga. This could be a harbinger for the English Premier League rights which ESPN also covets.

Bob Wolfley of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes that Tony Kornheiser mentioned Brett Favre a bit too much during last night’s Green Bay-New Orleans game.

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News says despite complaints from national pundits, there are no plans by the NFL to change the traditional early game on Thanksgiving from being played in Detroit.

Kyle Veazey of the Jackson (MS) Clarion-Ledger says next year’s date for the Ole Miss-Mississippi State game is up in the air as Raycom leaves as SEC over the air syndicator.

Also from the Clarion-Ledger, Rick Cleveland talks to a local resident who mixes audio for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

The Los Angeles Daily News’ Tom Hoffarth looks at your college football TV schedule for SoCal this week. And he has the NFL TV viewing schedule for this week as well.

Jim Carlisle of the Ventura County Star is happy that KCAL is no longer tape delaying Los Angeles Lakers games played on the East Coast.

Puck The Media has another round of its NHL Tournament of Announcers featuring NESN’s Jack Edwards vs. TSN’s Chris Cuthbert. Vote for Chris, please. Don’t allow Jack to win this round. He’s currently ahead.

That’s it. I’ll be back with Primetime and Late Night Viewing Picks, then I’ll do updates from home tonight.
