1560 switches lineup; so-so MMA ratings in Houston

KGOW (1560 AM) has tweaked its announcer lineup, pairing David Nuno with Richard Justice and Ken Hoffman on their respective midday shows. Raheel Ramzanali, Hoffman's former co-host, will take over weekend morning duties and will contribute as a reporter to weekday shows.

Also, CBS' much-hyped EliteXC mixed martial arts show was greeted with a relative yawn by local viewers Saturday night.

The show from 8 to 10 p.m. had national major market ratings of 2.7 for households, 1.9 for adults 25-54, 1.9 for adults 18-49, 2.6 for men 25-54 and 2.5 for men 18-49. In Houston, the numbers on Channel 11 were 1.5 for households, 0.8 for adults 25-54, 0.8 for adults 18-49, 1.0 for men 25-54 and 1.0 for men 18-49.

The Kimbo Slice-James Thompson "main event" had a 4.7 household rating from 10:30 to 10:45 p.m. in the major market. In Houston, it rated 3.7 on Channel 11.

David, do you know if David Nuno's Co host Rodney Waites will be on the show? I think their show was great, but I am happy Nuno will be on 5 days a week. It is great to hear live and local sports talk on Saturday and Sunday morning. I really hope Rodney stays with Gametime,(Even if he talks about Jordan being better than Dream)! Just this Past weekend they had a Women on that has had 9 Breast implant procedures, and she wants to go bigger. Now that is something to wake up to on Saturday Mornings. The Sunday they had a great interview with Chris Young from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chris and I played at Bellaire together, and it was great to hear from a local guy who has made it in the pros. They give us great non sports topics, as well as a ton of great sports takes. Keep it rolling 1560!!!

I'm told that Rodney Waites will continue with the weekend show.

Mid-day sports on The Game just got infinitely better.
Now Hoffie's show might be worth listening to again.

Why did Raheel get demoted? I guess his lack of sports knowledge finally caught up to him.

Nuno has more broadcast experience and probably would better situated to carry the show by himself if Hoffman or Justice have to miss shows because of Chronicle-related travel or other events. I don't think it's as much a reflection on Raheel as it is that Nuno probably has the talent and experience to play a larger role at this point.

So Justice couldn't carry his own show. Too bad. At least he still gets to be the Kathy Lee Gifford for the David Nuno show=)

Posted by: Buckeye Ray at June 2, 2008 03:36 PM

Justice definitely needed some help on the radio side, although he scores good interviews.

Hoffman and Raheel had a good rapport. It's a shame to split them. Sports knowledge couldn't have been a factor, because that show isn't much about sports anyway.

i think Raheel should have got a real degree from UT. He is probably making pennies at 1560.

So Daddy's boy and Pretty Boy keep their childish and unentertaining show? Too bad for Richard - he's the only knowledgeable person there. Between Phleghm, James Dean, Butterball Sean and Lennon Lover, the lineup has issues. Replace Lance with Gilbert -- would be more informative and entertaining. JMHO

Posted by: Lance_Blows at June 2, 2008 11:09 PM

Raheel & Ken really worked well together. Who cares if neither one (cough *ken* cough) knew that much about sports, that show was flat-out entertaining.

Posted by: bgt at June 3, 2008 01:57 AM

Raheel was not demoted in any sense of the word. Nuño has twins on the way, as in his wife is about 13 months pregnant and about to erupt any minute. We wanted to stabilize his life, give him a Monday through Friday job that is a little more predictable. Raheel is young, single, (and available ladies) and better poised to meet the challenges of a weekend show which very often turns into 7-days per week considering his (and Nuño's other responsibility of reporting.

Regarding Raheel making pennies...technically we are all making pennies. Some people just make more pennies than others. Not me though. I make nickels.

David, would you agree with me that it is rather silly, this zeal on the part of those who "love" 1560, to "prove" they can outperform more established stations, when they are obviously targeted at a narrow demographic?

To me, they seem to cater to the Gen-X/Y age group, mostly white guys between about 27 and 40 years of age who are wired-in to electronic media of all kinds from the Internet to cable & satellite TV, rely on TiVO/DVR to a far greater extent than the average, and retain what I might call a "college fraternity" sense of wry humor about everyone and everything?

I fall on the far side of that demographic myself, and although I enjoy some of the content the hosts spend at least as much time with "in-jokes" and pop-culture flavor-of-the-moment topics as they do sports.

In fact, I often find myself waiting through an entire ten- or fifteen-minute segment with nothing sports-related discussed.

It's not that I "hate" the format, but it doesn't do much for me except in small portions. I suspect there are a lot more folks who feel the same way, and I can't help but think they are self-limiting as a pretender for "no. 1" among all sports-talk radio.

I enjoy listenting to Mark and Andre' on 610 in the mornings as well, simply because they stay on topic to a far greater extent, and nothing and no one beats Charlie Palillo for pure information that is always topical. Yes, sometimes Palillo gives gratuitous plugs to his blog which typically has something regarding young women in various states of undress, but he doesn't dwell much on it.

In summary, I think KGOW fills a niche, but I can't see that they will ever rise much above that, not without becoming simply a "clone" of 610 and losing their current fan-base. I just don't believe that fan-base represents a majority of those who enjoy listening to sports talk.

I wouldn't say it's silly. Radio fans are like fans of any other segment of life. They want written proof that they're correct in their choices. I can understand their desire for data that backs up their belief that their favorite station is prevailing. But we're not going to get that data regarding 1560 until if and when it chooses to encode.

I think you make some interesting observations regarding the station's core audience.

I couldn't stand Lance Zerline at 610, and he's even worse at 1560. He sounds like a 12 yr old who drank to much coffee. If he disagree's with you, his has his hand on the button without giving the listener a chance to engage in a fair debate. He is without a doubt the most immature "dj" to ever grace the Houston air-waves.

David, what ever happened to that Caveman show (from the Geiko)
commercials?

Caveman was canceled after seven episodes.

So far Nuno has sounded a great with Hoffy. He was a little lost on the Democratic race talk, but he handled himself well today with the guest. I will be interested in seeing how Raheel and Rodney will fair this weekend. Rodney and Nuno were good together in my opinion, it was a different take on sports than the rest of the shows on 1560. They have a younger and more 20/30 something feel to their takes, and I am in the age demo and really enjoyed them. Good Luck to the 2 Longhorns Raheel and Rodney.

Wow, sure does sound like you listen to the station a lot to know all this stuff...just sayin'

Either that or your a competitor, which you probably are listening to 1560 anyways to get ideas that are fresh and new.

David Nuno is a great host, 1560 really impresses me.

I like 1560 The Game's daytime lineup, Richard Justice is the Leon Hale of sports.....his stories just crack me up.....even his choppy, syncopated delivery style grabs me .....I don't care if Richard isn't "slick enough" for radio, if I want slick, I can listen to Mr. Know-It-All Ware on you know where..........

Posted by: Brooks Davis at June 3, 2008 06:10 PM

In general, I think the sports talk in Houston lacks quality hosts compared to the amount of shows that are currently on the air with all of the different stations, but 1560 has a lineup that knows sports for sure. Do they always want to talk about sports? Not always, but that is fine with me.

I think the morning show at 1560 sets the standard for a balance between fun and serious sports. It isn't for everyone, but I like most of it and it is like comfort food to me. It makes me feel better listening to it when I drive to my job each morning (which, conversely, doesn't make me feel good).

As to the two previous comments, I think Lance Z is easily the most enjoyable host in Houston and it isn't even close. Palillo is intelligent but my too dry and lacks without a second voice there. Lance Z is the best in the city (and maybe with the Chronicle) when it comes to football and I love his passion and sense of humor. He's also one of the few hosts who are from here and lives and dies with the local teams like those of us who grew up here (just how many actually did grow up here anyway, DB?).

To each his own, but that is my two cents worth.

I'm right in the wheelhouse of the sports radio demo, and let's just say I'm tired of listening to radio that sounds like you are cramming for a sports-test the next day. Information and topics are nice to an extent, but having some laughs with the guys goes a lot further than talking about the backup QB possibly getting traded for 2 months straight.

As far as mostly white guys listening to KGOW, that's just ignorant. There is no basis for that.

I'm happy there is finally a station around whose management allows/encourages them to be a part of the community. Let the haters hate, we'll be the ones listening up the dial having fun.

1560 is the best "game" in town.maybe too much guy talk frequently. LZ and JG are the ingredients
that make the whole thing legitimate. however,
RJ, in his solo hour has the best pure sports
show in the city; in my suspect opinion.

David,

In your opinion does "The Game" live up to "The Ticket" in Dallas? Does there style live up, considering they are not a year old. I love what I hear so far.

They way they interview guests, and report from games is BY FAR, the best I have ever heard in this market. All their characters.

John & Lance are the best. Justice, is solid. Hoffy and Nuno are refreshing. Sean and John, are just finding.

And I love the weekend show. Solid sports half the time, solid laughs the rest.

I wasn't in Dallas when KTCK went to all-sports, so I don't have an apples-to-apples comparison of what it sounded like in its first year. Until somebody comes up with a new programming concept, however, I can't see that any station in any market will again have the impact that KTCK had in D-FW. When KTCK started up, it was one of the first of its kind anywhere, much less in D-FW. KGOW, by comparison, was the fourth sports entry in the market alone.

If you like the personalities, you'll like the station. But the chances of it making such an impact that it advances the art of radio, if there is such a thing, in the same fashion that KTCK did are limited because of the fragmented nature of sports media in this decade and beyond. But who knows? Time, as always, will tell.

Sadly, this describes me pretty much to a "T". 1560 is where my car radio stays set probably 90% of the time these days. As much as I enjoy Mark & Andre in the morning or Charlie in the afternoon, the non-sports talk is what keeps me coming back to 1560. That and the fact that 80% of the callers to 610/790 have nothing even remotely interesting to say when they call.

If there are big sports stories going on, especially in the local market, 1560 will discuss these. But the laughs, the camaraderie between the hosts is what keeps me coming back.

The work Lance did leading up to the NFL draft was impressive. When there's a baseball story going on, you can count on RJ to bring someone impressive in for an interview. If they could find a way to steal John McLain away from the competition that would give them a full house of talent.

Anyone who claims that LZ will hang up on you if he does not agree with you is just wrong. LZ will debate you until you hang up is more likely. Robust Rich Lord is the hang up KING not LZ!
