Grand slam.
The Major League Baseball Division Series brought strong numbers to TBS.
A tripleheader of Division Series games averaged 4.5 million viewers on Wednesday, led by the lone AL broadcast of the day -- the Boston Red Sox 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels, which drew 5.5 million viewers. The 5.5 million viewers is the most for a Turner Sports broadcast since a NASCAR race drew 6.4 million viewers in July.
According to Major League Baseball, Red Sox/Angels Game 1, which started at 6:30 PM ET, drew the largest increase in viewership over last year. The 5.5 million viewers for the game marked a 115% increase over the comparable game last year -- Game 1 between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres, which aired on ESPN in a weaker 4:00 PM ET timeslot.
Rockies/Phillies Game 1, starting at 3:00 PM ET, drew 3.2 million viewers, up 78% from the comparable Twins/Athletics Game 1, which aired on ESPN in the 1:00 PM ET timeslot last year.
Cubs/Diamondbacks Game 1, starting at 10:00 PM ET, drew 5.1 million viewers, down 39% from the comparable Tigers/Yankees Game 1 in 2006. However, keep in mind that the Tigers/Yankees game aired on broadcast (FOX) in primetime (with an 8:00 PM ET start time).
To put the 4.5 million viewers for TBS' Division Series coverage in perspective, six NASCAR races on TNT averaged 5.8 million viewers earlier this year, and 43 NBA Playoff games on TNT averaged 3.3 million viewers last spring (with 5 million average viewers for the Eastern Conference Finals).
