The "tyranny of distance" and Antipodean cometary astronomy.
Abstract
This paper examines the communication delays that occurred between the Antipodes and Europe in the nineteenth century and during World War II, and the impact of these on Australian cometary astronomy. The independent discoveries of comets C/1865 B1 C/1941 B2 and C/1941 K1 by Abbott, Skjellerup and Howarth, respectively, are documented, and Bone's observations of C/1880 C1 are discussed.
