“The American people [verb]...”
You know you are hearing bullsh!t any time someone says “The American people [verb]...”, as if the speaker has any idea what 100-200 million adults are actually [verb-ing].

That’s “No True Scotsman”. Widely used in politics - “if you don’t like it here, then leave”. Seems to be used more often against the left-fringe than the right-fringe.

I believe Will Durst had a standup bit that talked about “what the American people want”, concluding that the only thing he can conclude the American people actually want is nickel beer night to be every night.
