Mornet, Paris 1995, pp. 425-438 © dell'autore -Distribuito in formato digitale da "Reti Medievali"] Le dossier des anciens titres du cartulaire de Casauria, et celui des actes entourant la fondation de ce monastère en 873, permettent de reconstituer quelques-unes des familles des principaux acteurs sociaux de la seconde moitié du IXe siècle 2 . Parmi elles, celle de Karol, fils de Liutprand, vivant dans le comté de Chieti dans les Abruzzes, entre 850 et 870 offre un particulier intérêt. Une petite quarantaine d'actes, étagés sur une période allant du début des années 850 à la fin des années 870, comportant des ventes, des contrats agraires et des échanges, nous donnent des informations sur Karol et sa descendance sur trois générations. Ce dossier permet d'illustrer les problèmes entourant la mobilité foncière, les processus de concentration et de fragmentation de la propriété, et, surtout, la nature des liens existant entre un grand monastère et les membres de la frange supérieure de la population alleutière 3 . LES ACHATS DE KAROL (854, vers 870). Durant le quart de siècle que dure l'activité documentée de Karol, celui-procède à 22 achats et à trois échanges. Les achats sont tous localisés dans une même zone de la villaTeatina, qui occupait le territoire de l'actuelle commune de Tocco, aux lieux-dits Casule et Frassenetulo. Il y a là un plateau, entaillé par la vallée du Pescara et celles de ses affluents l'Arollo et l'Orta, particulièrement fertile, et tôt mis en valeur 4 . Au IXe siècle, la toponymie n'indique pas de zones à défricher, ou en cours de défrichement. Tout au plus offre-t-elle, avec ce Frassenetulo le rappel d'une frênaie, sans doute déjà disparue. L'aire concernée doit être localisée le long de l'Arollo, près du lieu-dit Marano 5. Karol porte une attention particulière à la vigne, coûteuse dans cette zone, et aux terrains complémentaires du vignoble, c'est-à-dire aux saussaies qui se trouvent en bordure de la rivière Arollo 6 . Dans quatre cas, nous avons la certitude que les parcelles de vigne sont encloses, ce qui 1 F.Bougard, D.Barthélemy et C.Wickham ont bien voulu lire ce papier et me faire part de leurs commentaires critiques, ce dont je les remercie vivement. 2 Le monastère de S.Clemente a Casauria, fondé par Louis II en 873 se trouve dans les Abruzzes, dans l'actuelle province de Pescara, près du fleuve du même nom, à une cinquantaine de kilomètres de la mer.

L'historiographie a longtemps dénié toute compétence économique aux élites sociales carolingiennes. La représentation commune du comportement des aristocraties du haut Moyen Âge, fixée depuis Marc Bloch 1 et renforcée d'une certaine manière par G. Duby et R. Fossier, considérait que leur attitude à l'égard des biens matériels était dominée le gaspillage et l'insouciance. Les largesses et les dons, dirigés essentiellement vers les églises, semblaient incompatibles avec les notions d'accumulation et de transmission patrimoniale. La circulation des richesses se faisait essentiellement par le don et était dominée par des échanges dont la forme marchande était douteuse. Or, depuis le début du XXI e siècle, d'autres axes de réflexion sont apparus, qui insistent sur le caractère économiquement rationnel des comportements des classes dirigeantes : on privilégie désormais une approche où les actions menées et les décisions prises sont considérées comme permettant à la fois d'optimiser les allocations de ressource de l'aristocratie 2 et de en s'acquitter des obligations envers les églises et les pauvres 3 . Le point est important, notre compréhension de la gestion des richesses par les hommes du IX e siècle, achoppant sur la question des arbitrages à opérer en faveur des misérables et de tous ceux que, d'une manière ou d'une autre, il convient d'aider ou de protéger. La résolution des problèmes matériels posés par l'organisation concrète des grosses fortunes foncières ainsi que celle de l'affectation des différentes ressources qu'elles permettaient de produire a été abordée depuis longtemps et a fait, durant ces dernières décennies, des progrès considérables 4 . Au coeur des réflexions se trouve la place occupée par l'écrit de gestion dans les techniques mises au point et mobilisées par les élites carolingiennes et, en particulier, celle

On sait que la région a laissé une documentation écrite abondante et continue pour la période carolingienne et postcarolingienne. Celle-ci est contenue pour l'essentiel dans les monuments diplomatiques que sont les cartulaires de Farfa, celui de Casauria et, dans une moindre mesure, la chronique de Saint-Vincent-au -Volturne. Les archives du Mont-Cassin fournissent, quant à elles, un appoint extrêmement intéressant mais quantitativement limité, les actes économiques (c'est-à-dire les ventes et les contrats agraires) y étant totalement inexistants pour le IXe siècle, et assez peu nombreux pour les Xe-XIe siècles 2 . Par ailleurs, il n'y pas, que ce soit pour la Sabine ou pour les Abruzzes, de trésors monétaires. Les trouvailles de monnaies dans des fouilles sont, pour les IXe et Xe siècles, d'une rareté qui surprend les archéologues eux-mêmes. Sur des sites qui proposent une stratigraphie continue de l'Antiquité à la période moderne, cette absence pose un redoutable problème, celui de la réalité de la circulation du denier carolingien et donc celui de sa véritable fonction économique : est-il le medium normal de l'échange ou un instrument de mesure de la valeur et un objet de thésaurisation?. Je reviendrai sur ce point en conclusion, mais autant le dire tout de suite : les solutions que l'on peut proposer dans l'état actuel de la recherche ne sont pas tout à fait satisfaisantes, et il faut sans doute encore approfondir une question que l'on pensait pourtant définitivement éclaircie 3 .

La question des élites rurales du haut Moyen Âge est apparue relativement récemment dans l'historiographie. Admettre, même par hypothèse, l'existence d'une élite paysanne revient à dire que les paysans sont les sujets de leur propre histoire et qu'ils ne sont pas totalement soumis à la domination seigneuriale : ils ont, dans cette perspective, une véritable autonomie, qui est davantage qu'une capacité de réaction aux événements sociaux ou économiques. Les lectures les plus courantes de la société médiévale excluent ce point de vue pour des raisons complexes qui tiennent en partie à ce que l'objet d'étude privilégié est, depuis Marc Bloch la seigneurie. Or, la problématique de la seigneurie a davantage mis l'accent sur les liens de sujétion et sur l'oppression subie par le monde rural que sur le fonctionnement concret des communautés d'habitants dont on voyait mal d'ailleurs comment elles pouvaient fonctionner à l'intérieur du cadre coercitif de la seigneurie. La seigneurie -ou le pouvoir des maîtres de la terre sur les hommes qui l'exploitentconstitue un versant du problème. Une autre façon de présenter les choses est de se demander s'il est possible que l'ordonnancement des sociétés paysannes du haut Moyen Âge ait reposé sur l'existence de personnages ressemblant d'une façon ou d'une autre, fût-ce que par analogie, aux big men de l'anthropologie anglo-saxonne. Il faudrait admettre que l'élite pourrait être composée de personnages sans position statutaire mais dotés d'une autorité de fait reposant sur leur capacité à négocier des services. Leur rôle politique à la tête d'une communauté reposerait sur une richesse rassemblée non pas pour être accumulée et transmise mais pour être redistribuée afin de créer des formes de reconnaissance et donc des réseaux où l'autorité s'appuie sur la réciprocité dans l'échange. L'autorité de ces hommes doit toujours être négociée et est sans arrêt susceptible d'être remise en cause. Un autre niveau doit enfin être considéré. Le monde rural est relié à la société qui l'englobe. Il a, en particulier, des relations directes ou indirectes avec l'aristocratie de rang comtal ou équivalent à travers des personnages dotés la plupart du temps d'un statut (sculdassii, machtierns, gastalds). Ceux-là, s'ils ne font pas véritablement partie de la communauté rurale, doivent cependant, du fait de leur position intermédiaire, être considérés comme constitutifs d'une forme d'élite rattachée à la fois au monde aristocratique et au monde paysan qu'ils gouvernent sans le dominer au sens où les seigneurs du XI e siècle ont pu le faire.

Ce n'est pas la première fois qu'ils s'invitent dans l'Histoire. Dans un livre excellent, Kyle Harper [1] discute de leur rôle dans la chute de l'empire romain occidental et montre comment ils ont révélé la perte de résilience de Rome. À partir de cet exemple, nous nous livrons à des libres réflexions dans ces temps incertains. Ce qui nous amène à réfléchir sur la perte de résilience et la chute de l'empire américain ainsi qu'au déplacement du centre du monde et à la montée de l'Asie. Et aussi à considérer que nous vivons actuellement une crise de civilisation qui sera longue. Elle inscrit dans l'horizon le dépassement du capitalisme, le mode de production qui lui succédera n'est pas déterminé et pourrait aussi être inégalitaire. Cette crise nous conduit à revenir sur la compréhension des transitions entre civilisations et à resituer l'effondrement, qui n'est pas la fin de l'Histoire, comme un passage vers l'émergence de nouvelles civilisations. Ce que nous vivons n'est pas une parenthèse, c'est une rupture. D'abord par l'ampleur du phénomène. C'est la première fois dans l'histoire de l'humanité que plusieurs milliards de personnes sont enfermées chez elles, en même temps, sur instruction des autorités et sans protester. Ensuite par la prise de conscience collective que quelque chose de fondamental est advenu et qui ne nous fera pas retrouver le monde d'avant. Il est clair que nous allons vivre avec des pandémies. Celle que nous avons vécue n'est pas un accident. Au cours des dix ou quinze dernières années, nous avons eu plusieurs avertissements, le VIH, Ébola, le Sras... D'une manière ou d'une autre, l'épisode actuel de cette crise va passer. La crise sanitaire ne disparaîtra pas, tant qu'on n'aura pas trouvé un médicament ou un vaccin, avec des

This contribution delves into the intricate processes of cultural contact and spiritual transformation that connect the works of Virgil, Augustine, and Alcuin. By focusing on the concepts of gentes and imperium, I explore how the se ideas, traditionally categorised as either 'pagan' or 'Christian', intertwine and undergo transformation within their broader semantic and contextual domains. By unveiling the extent to which these concepts evolve under the influence of Augustine, we witness a blurring of boundaries that challenges traditional categorisations. While Virgil's 'Georgica' and Augustine's 'De Civitate Dei' serve as pivotal sources, Alcuin's 'Versus de Patribus Regibus et Sanctis Euboricensis Ecclesiae' acts as a case study and playground for showcasing the transformation and intermingling of these concepts within the context of an emerging civilisation, city and moral community, York.

The oldest traces of Slavic settlement in the Kłodnica basin certainly date back to the older phases of the early Middle Ages (8th-10th centuries). These include undetermined settlement points, remains of open and naturally defensive settlements, and a stronghold. Early Slavic settlements were concentrated here, similarly to the neighbouring areas, mainly on the floodplain terraces of river valleys, in the case of the Kłodnica river and its smaller and larger tributaries, including the Drama river. Without a doubt, the streams were an important source of drinking water for the population. In addition to life needs, its availability also often played a key role in the economy, and sometimes, as in the case of larger rivers, even the basis of existence. However, the state of current research on the oldest settlement of Slavs in the Kłodnica basin has never been the subject of a separate scientific work. In recent years, newer geophysical methods have been used to more precisely identify some sites. An analysis was also carried out of previously unpublished materials, discovered during the so-called millennium research, and some artefacts were subjected to specialist expertise. The material collected for analysis is not very extensive, but an attempt to comprehensively summarize the results of older and newer research works and their scientific commentary, in the author's opinion, will constitute an important starting point for further research on the issue of Slavic settlement in this part of Silesia.

Hom hi presenta la diversa tipologia documental de que es pot servir I'historiador per reconstruir la historia d'un poble i, centrant-se en el cas concret de Polinya, hom addueix algun nou document d'epoca altrnedieval que complementa el diplomatan ja publicat d'aquesta població. 1, per als temps baixmedievals, hom es fixa, sohretot, en l'apoaació dels mannals notarials i de les visites pastorals, les quals, particularment, permeten de resseguir arnb molt detall la vida quotidiana, i fins i tot personal, dels seus habitants, perla qual cosa l'autor anuncia la publicació total i crítica de les visites pastorals fetes a Polinyh del Valles.

Selo Plavno nedaleko od Knina poznato je kao područje složene arheološke topografije, ali i kao naselje koje se često javlja u srednjovjekovnim ispravama, počevši još od 1423. godine. Uglavnom se spominje kao feudalni posjed hrvatskih velikaša vezanih za ugarskog kralja i Kninski kaptol. Na njegovu području, osim važnih povijesnih lokaliteta, poput utvrde Tukleč (Tuklac; Turska kaca) i Plavno, nalazi se i lokalitet Međine s Đurića grobljem. Na tom su lokalitetu pronalaženi brojni reljefi kasnoantičke i ranosrednjovjekovne provenijencije, još od prvih slučajnih pronalazaka predromaničkih reljefa od strane lokalnog stanovništva tijekom posljednjeg desetljeća 19. i na samom početku 20. stoljeća, pa sve do amaterskih arheoloških istraživanja koja je od 1902. do 1906. godine, uz nastavak do 1910., proveo fra Lujo Marun.
Cilj ovoga izlaganja jest detaljnom stilsko-morfološkom obradom ponovno aktualizirati tom prilikom pronađene predromaničke i ranoromaničke kamene reljefe s lokaliteta Međine - Đurića groblje u Plavnom te ih sagledati u širem povijesnom kontekstu hrvatskoga ranog srednjovjekovlja. Iako navedenim istraživanjima nisu otkriveni arhitektonski ostatci crkve čijim su liturgijskim instalacijama navedeni reljefi pripadali, a za koju postoji mogućnost da je, zbog manjeg broja ranokršćanskih reljefa, bila i iz kasnoantičkoga razdoblja, stilske i epigrafičke odlike reljefā jasno pokazuju da je tijekom ranoga srednjeg vijeka ta građevina imala najmanje tri faze opremanja unutrašnjosti liturgijskim instalacijama, i to dvije faze u 9. te jednu na prijelazu iz 11. u 12. stoljeće. Za nadati se je da će i ove spoznaje biti poticaj budućim revizijskim arheološkim istraživanjima koja bi trebalo što prije poduzeti na navedenom lokalitetu, kako bi se eventualno pronašli ostatci sakralne građevine kojoj su ranokršćanski, predromanički i ranoromanički reljefi pripadali te kako bi se na taj način konačno rasvijetlio cjelokupan kontekst njihova nastanka i funkcije.

Este libro constituye una exploración de los límites fluidos del género en los inicios del cristianismo, centrándose en el Mediterráneo oriental durante los siglos III al VII. Con especial atención a los siglos III y IV momento en que el cristianismo transita de secta marginal a religión hegemónica, el libro desvela cómo las prácticas ascéticas y las transformaciones sociales desafiaron las categorías binarias que hoy damos por inmutables.

Tres ejes guían este estudio: las concepciones de género y sexualidad en los primeros siglos del cristianismo, más allá del mito de la represión corporal monacal; los ascetas transgénero, figuras que, nacidas mujeres, trascendieron los confines de su sexo para ser reconocidas socialmente como ascetas varones; y la autoemasculación ascética cristiana, centrándose en sus conexiones con los galli del culto a Cibeles-Atis y cuestionando la visión tradicional como tercer género.

A través de un análisis minucioso de fuentes literarias griegas y testimonios iconográficos enriquecido por comparaciones con sociedades contemporáneas, el libro no solo reinterpreta el pasado, sino que interroga nuestro presente. Con rigor y audacia, propone un cambio de perspectiva que revitaliza debates estancados, invitando a repensar cómo la Antigüedad tardía articuló, y a veces subvirtió, las nociones de género que heredamos.

Analiziraju se ostaci arhitrava predromaničke oltarne ograde, otkriveni u sekundarnoj funkciji potkraj XIX. st. u kompleksu splitske katedrale. Četiri sačuvana ulomka se ne spajaju po frakturi, ali sudeći po sukladnoj ornamentaciji, podudarnim dimenzijama i paleografiji popratnog natpisa, nedvojbeno pripadaju istoj cjelini. Reljefi su produkcija Benediktinske klesarske radionice iz vremena kneza Branimira (posljednja četvrtina IX. st.). Latinski natpisi s ove oltarne ograde objavljivani su više puta (F. Bulić, L. Jelić, N. Cambi, Ž. Rapanić i dr.), ali nisu izazvali veću znanstvenu pozornost epigrafičara, dočim se o njihovoj likovnoj komponenti više pisalo (N. Jakšić, I. Josipović). U ovom prilogu ponuditi će se preciznije čitanje i datiranje natpisa, te izložiti konzekvence koje to i takvo čitanje nosi po kronologiju suvremene predromaničke skulpture. Nadalje, propitati ćemo u kojoj mjeri ponuđena rekontekstualizacija splitskog natpisa omogućuje da ga koristimo kao, s jedne strane, izvor za rekonstruiranje porijekla i smjerova ulaženja novih sustava datiranja u politički razjedinjene prostore ranosrednjovjekovnog istočnog Jadrana, te, s druge strane, kao izvor za sveukupni međuodnos kulturnih krugova Hrvatske Kneževine i Dalmacije potkraj karolinškog doba.

During the monsoon of the year 2016 the Indian Heritage Cities Network Foundation based in Bengaluru asked Kimaya to provide help in preparing Heritage Management and Development Plans for ten Heritage villages across the length of the Karnataka State. In many ways the project involved intense interaction with the people of the villages, the Government officers and of course knowing the heritage of these villages in the broadest sense of the word. Most of all it was a grand exposure to the complex and rich heritage of Karnataka. This presentation was one of the shorter version of the extensive data collected and conclusions drawn. Though the project did not see the light of implementation it has been an eye opener about the possibilities of Heritage Management and certainly a worthwhile exercise for our practice.

The paper presents finds of early medieval military accesories from the Chodelka River valley (Lublin Voivodeship): elements of butt weapons, staff weapons, throwing weapons and equestrian equipment. Some of the artefacts were discovered during excavations in the 1950s and 1960s. In recent years, the collection has been supplemented by surface excavations carried out with metal detectors since 2019.

Architecture has been a carrier of content for centuries, and the circumstances under which buildings were constructed have influenced their forms and charged them with ideological meanings. An example of such an object is the Church of St. Barbara in Bytom, built between 1928 and 1930 and designed by Arthur Kickton. Erected in what was then a German border town, facing the Polish border with its façade, it exemplifies so-called political architecture. The article presents the background to the creation of the temple and their influence on its shape, and tries to answer the question of whether it was indeed intended as a bastion against Polishness.

En 1973, P.-L. Pelet livre le premier des trois volumes de "Fer Charbon Acier dans le Pays de Vaud". Cet ouvrage fondateur traitant de la fabrication du fer brut par le procédé direct dans un petit secteur du massif du Jura contient des résultats d’analyses radiocarbone qui inaugurent la longue série de dates accumulées au cours des décennies suivantes dans les cantons de Berne, du Jura et de Vaud en Suisse et dans les régions Grand Est et Bourgogne Franche-Comté en France. Totalement inattendu au départ, le haut Moyen Âge (tout particulièrement la période mérovingienne) y fait preuve d’un dynamisme aujourd’hui reconnu sur l’ensemble de ce vaste espace où la production se répartit entre des zones de production intense et, dans une moindre mesure, des ateliers isolés. Ces concentrations de zones sidérurgiques posent de sérieuses questions sur les dynamiques de l’organisation de la production pour tout le premier Moyen Âge, notamment dans la manière dont elles s’insèrent dans les rapports fonciers et les systèmes de domanialité relatifs à ces espaces. À ce titre, les travaux de Gérard Chouquer sur la Bourgogne offrent un éclairage fort pertinent sur la distribution des fiscs. Par exemple, la zone de production de Berthelange ne semble pas relever du fisc, mais plutôt des autorités comtales et épiscopales, alors qu’ailleurs, en Lombardie et en Bavière d’importants districts sidérurgiques étaient bien contrôlés par les fiscs ou monastères impériaux, comme l’ont démontré Maria Elena Cortese et Mathias Hensch. Les résultats de l’étude des rapports fonciers dans lesquels s’insèrent les zones de production sidérurgique appellent donc à considérer les dynamiques de domanialité sur les droits miniers. Nous explorons ainsi deux hypothèses, celle de monopoles royaux concédés à des fidèles et celle d’une pluralité des formes dont l’emboîtement hiérarchique demeure imparfait. Pour explorer ces questions, il est nécessaire d’élargir l’aire géographique considérée à l’ensemble de l’Europe. L’analyse des quelque vingt attestations de droits miniers datant du premier Moyen Âge milite pour la seconde interprétation. En effet, si la prévalence des intérêts fiscaux est manifeste, et ce, depuis le VIe siècle, les VIIIe-IXe siècles offrent des témoignages indéniables de droits tenus par des particuliers ou encore par l’aristocratie, sans que l’on puisse déceler des traces de concessions fiscales. Au terme de ces regards croisés, il ressort des dynamiques variées qui contredisent l’image misérabiliste d’une production du fer localisée et effectuée à temps partiel par des artisans-paysans, mais aussi qui nuancent l’image centralisatrice héritée de l’historiographie sur l’économie domaniale.

Abstract:
In 1973, P.-L. Pelet published the first of three volumes of Fer Charbon Acier dans le Pays de Vaud (Iron, Coal and Steel in the Vaud Region). This seminal work on the production of raw iron using the direct process in a small area of the Jura mountains contains the results of radiocarbon analyses that marked the beginning of a long series of dates accumulated over the following decades in the cantons of Bern, Jura and Vaud in Switzerland and in the Grand Est and Bourgogne Franche-Comté regions of France. Completely unexpected at the outset, the early Middle Ages (particularly the Merovingian period) reveal a dynamism that is now recognised throughout this vast area, where production is divided between areas of intense production and, to a lesser extent, isolated workshops. These concentrations of ironworking areas raise serious questions about the dynamics of production organisation throughout the early Middle Ages, particularly in terms of how they fit into the land tenure and domain systems relating to these areas. In this regard, Gérard Chouquer’s work on Burgundy offers highly relevant insights into the distribution of fiscal authorities. For example, the Berthelange production area does not appear to have been under the control of the fisc, but rather of the count and episcopal authorities, whereas elsewhere, in Lombardy and Bavaria, large ironworking districts were indeed controlled by the fisc or imperial monasteries, as demonstrated by Maria Elena Cortese and Mathias Hensch. The results of the study of land tenure relationships in areas of steel production therefore call for consideration of the dynamics of state ownership of mining rights. We thus explore two hypotheses: that of royal monopolies granted to loyal subjects, and that of a plurality of forms whose hierarchical interlocking remains imperfect. To explore these questions, it is necessary to broaden the geographical area under consideration to include the whole of Europe. An analysis of some twenty attestations of mining rights dating from the early Middle Ages supports the second interpretation. Indeed, while the prevalence of fiscal interests is evident from the 6th century onwards, the 8th and 9th centuries offer undeniable evidence of rights held by individuals or even by the aristocracy, without any trace of fiscal concessions. At the end of these exchanges, a variety of dynamics emerge that contradict the pessimistic image of local iron production carried out part-time by artisan farmers, but also nuance the centralising image inherited from historiography on the manorial economy.

espanolEl presente estudio recoge los resultados obtenidos durante la excavacion de caracter preventivo del yacimiento “Los Secadales”, dentro de los trabajos arqueologicos vinculados la construccion de un gasoducto entre Arevalo (Avila) y Sanchidrian (Segovia). A la excavacion le acompano un estudio de los materiales procedentes de dicho yacimiento llevado a cabo mediante un convenio entre ANTEQUEM S.L. y el area de arqueologia de la Universidad de Burgos. Tal estudio ha permitido determinar una cronologia relativa para las estructuras documentadas. Entre ellas destaca un horno de atribucion tardorromana. By discussing the existing scholarly literature as well as analysing the available evidence the paper aims at deconstructing the theory still pervading the Croatian scholarship about the so-called limes maritimus, which has been devised to describe what is seen as an elaborate network of maritime strongholds along the coast and on the islands of the Eastern Adriatic created in the Justinianic Age. The intention is to offer fresh insights and dispel with the theory as a reductive historiographic construct in an attempt to open the Croatian scholarship entrenched in the prevailing Justinian I's limes paradigm to new avenues of thoughts concerning the general militarisation of landscape in the Eastern Adriatic during Late Antiquity.

L’onomàstica, com a ciència, és la branca de la lingüística que estudia els noms propis, mentre que la toponímia (o toponomàstica) és la subbranca de l’onomàstica que tracta els noms de lloc; això és, els mots que s’utilitzen per anomenar el territori. Com a disciplina que estudia els noms de lloc, la toponímia n’examina aspectes com són ara la motivació, la pronúncia, la seva evolució escrita, la informació que contenen, etc. i, entre altres aspectes, també en fa (o intenta fer) una interpretació semàntica del seu sentit en el moment original.
En la perspectiva de les consideracions que cal tenir presents en el moment d’efectuar estudis o projectes tècnics que aborden aspectes sobre la toponímia és molt important tenir en compte que els noms de lloc són la fossilització en la llengua d’idees mentals més o menys antigues i, en aquest sentit, estan constituïts per una o més paraules. En aquest mateix context, també és cabdal tenir present que els termes que constitueixen aquests noms poden ser avui dia encara utilitzats per la població d’un territori i, per tant, intel·ligibles; però també poden ser més o menys opacs, perquè la llengua que els va fixar és pretèrita: o bé ja no es parla en una zona geogràfica concreta, o bé ha sofert processos d’evolució i abandonament que han propiciat que algunes de les seves formes hagin estat modificades i, fins i tot, oblidades.
Des d’una consideració evolutiva de la ciència onomàstica es constata que l’estudi dels noms de lloc ha estat portat a terme tradicionalment, en primera instància, des del punt de vista lingüístic. Mitjançant aquesta sistemàtica d’exploració, i per al cas dels topònims relacionats amb el paisatge, quan els noms analitzats són interpretables semànticament, l’èxit d’aquest plantejament en el pla dels resultats pot assolir uns nivells elevats. Això sobretot, en dos casos: per una banda, quan hi ha una correspondència o ajustament més o menys directe del nom amb la realitat actual i/o històrica de l’espai físic de nominació; per l’altra, quan es poden assenyalar unes relacions d’acomodació lèxica i semàntica dels noms per a cada territori i dialecte. Però, pel que fa a aquest segon cas, la pregunta clau que convé plantejar-se és la següent: és suficient enfocar l’examen d’aquestes relacions exclusivament des de la perspectiva de la lingüística?
Per a respondre aquesta qüestió, és necessari tenir present que, en el cas dels noms del medi físic, alguns d’aquests topònims poden ser molt antics; i en aquesta conjuntura, poden ser semànticament no transparents (o sigui: opacs o enganyosos). En aquestes condicions, l’estudi en primer terme des de la lingüística pot presentar grans dificultats o, fins i tot, resultar infructuós i, així mateix, convé ser conscients que, probablement, el coneixement del lloc pot ser que sigui «l’únic element que quedi» per a intentar reconèixer la motivació del topònim analitzat. Amb raó, doncs, el reconeixement del medi físic ha de ser un aspecte cabdal en l’estudi dels noms de lloc. Així, l’examen específic del paratge de nominació esdevé essencial de cara a poder investigar la motivació dels noms de lloc que tenen el seu origen en característiques del medi físic. I, en aquest pla d’anàlisi del medi físic, és notori tenir present que alguns elements o característiques de l’entorn natural —com són ara, per exemple, aspectes geològics o geomorfològics— presenten sovint un comportament equiparable a un component «estable»; això és, que aquests elements físics tendeixen a mantenir-se durant molt temps pràcticament invariables. En aquestes circumstàncies, és important fer la màxima atenció a l’exploració paisatgística detallada del medi físic concernit per un topònim perquè pot aportar una informació molt rellevant —fins i tot, en determinats casos, transcendental— de cara a una interpretació com més fidedigna sigui possible de l’origen del nom en qüestió.
Es fa evident, doncs, que per a avançar en el coneixement i caracterització de les relacions toponímia / medi físic no són suficients els estudis fets des d’un vessant filològic que segueixi els patrons estrictament clàssics. En aquest sentit, si es té present que els nostres noms de lloc no són més que les romanalles petrificades d’una o d’unes antigues llengües usades en el nostre territori, ja que els nostres avantpassats van posar noms als llocs per motius fonamentats, i es parteix de la premissa que, majoritàriament, els topònims s’ajusten al principi de significativitat territorial —que assenyala que molt sovint els noms de lloc fan referència concreta a característiques reals del paisatge que designen (Tort, 2003)—, és molt important tenir present que molt probablement la fisiografia del paratge designat per cada topònim encara guardi la clau per a desxifrar el seu significat. O, en tot cas, també és molt interessant conèixer els canvis que ha pogut patir el territori en qüestió (històrics, ambientals, etc.), ja que també poden ser crucials per poder copsar el sentit dels topònims que li són aplicats.
Per tant, el fet que els noms de lloc del medi físic descriguin el paisatge en un moment de la seva formació —sens dubte, com a conseqüència de la necessitat dels nostres avantpassats d’explicar el territori— els atorga un interès molt gran. Sobretot si tenim en compte que podem considerar els topònims, d’una banda, com una mena de «registre històric» de les observacions efectuades pels nostres ancestres des de molt antic; i, d’altra banda, són també el reflex de la llengua utilitzada en el moment en què van ésser concebuts i fixats.
Amb raó, doncs, no ha d’estranyar que el reconeixement del medi físic sigui un aspecte cabdal en l’estudi dels noms de lloc. Així, l’estudi específic del paratge de nominació s’albira com a fonamental de cara a poder esbrinar per què un lloc té el nom que té. No obstant això, no sempre l’estudi del medi físic és fàcil i sovint pot requerir d’ull d’expert —en especial, quan els topònims fan referència a aspectes paisatgístics observats pels avantpassats fa una pila de segles i quan pot ser que, avui dia, aquestes característiques passin força desapercebudes. I encara cal afegir que, en funció de l’opacitat dels topònims, i per tal de dilucidar una interpretació versemblant del motiu de nominació, l’estudi del medi físic també pot requerir tècniques complementàries, fonamentades en la comparació de paisatges d’indrets que presenten noms iguals o similars.
És objectiu d’aquest treball, doncs, mostrar elements i tècniques per a ajudar a treballar amb el paisatge a l’hora de reconèixer eventuals aspectes de nominació. Perquè l’estudi dels noms de lloc opacs o enganyosos no es pot considerar complet si no va acompanyat de l’anàlisi paisatgística de l’indret concernit que l’avali. Una conformitat que s’ha d’obtenir de forma individual per a cada topònim, però que també convé que quedi avalada per la globalitat de la corresponent sèrie de noms iguals o similars en què es pugui agrupar el topònim analitzat, sobre la base d’un tret paisatgístic comú. A la pràctica, és el sistema que hem propugnat amb el mètode de l’anàlisi toponímica i fisiogràfica comparativa (Planas, 2023). Per facilitar la visualització i l’ús, entre els estudiosos de la toponímia, d’aquestes tècniques de treball, en la segona part d’aquest article es presenta un exemple d’estudi desenvolupat a través d’una sèrie constituïda per topònims que contenen un radical buix- / boix-.

The study focuses on critical translation into Slovak of the Austrian chronicle Continuatio Praedicatorum Vindobonensium (CPV), which records events from 1025 to 1283. The translation is based on Wilhelm Wattenbach's Latin edition in the Monumenta Germaniae Historica and aims to fill a gap in knowledge of the narrative sources for Central European medieval history, offering a critical resource for further research. Written by Dominican authors in Vienna at the end of the 13 th century, the chronicle incorporates information from other Austrian chronicles. It examines key political events such as the War of the Babenberg Succession involving Přemysl Otakar II, Béla IV, and Rudolf I of Habsburg, as well as cultural and geographic details. These include mentions of an extreme winter in 1270 and the Cuman lifestyle in the Kingdom of Hungary during the reign of Ladislaus IV.

This thesis examines the translation efforts of Athanasios III Dabbās, the Melkite Patriarch of Antioch, through a critical edition and annotated translation of the first book of Fī ṣināʿat al-faṣāḥa, an Arabic adaptation produced in 1718 in Aleppo. This adaptation is based on the Τέχνη Ρητορικής (Technē Rhētorikēs) by Frangiskos Skoufos, a 17th-century Greek orator and theologian. Situated at the intersection of post-Byzantine Greek and Christian Arab traditions, this work demonstrates the vibrancy and renewal of the Greek-Arab translation movement during the early Nahḍa, particularly in the domains of philosophy and rhetoric. The primary contribution of this research lies in the identification of the previously unknown Greek source text and the discovery of unpublished parallel passages with other Arabic philosophical texts. These findings reveal Dabbās’s intent to synthesize Greek and Arabic philosophical traditions, drawing on a rhetorical manual printed in Venice fifty years earlier. Employing a philological approach, the critical edition is based on the collation of 38 manuscript witnesses. While it does not aim to establish a stemma codicum, it identifies several distinct recensions, offering new insights into the complex history of the text’s transmission. The commentary explores the cultural and intellectual dynamics underlying the work and analyzes the translation strategies employed, highlighting innovative linguistic and stylistic adaptations tailored to the doctrinal and practical needs of the period. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between pre-modern Greek and Christian Arabic traditions on the eve of the Nahda, shedding light on their shared intellectual heritage and the creative processes that shaped this critical period of renewal.

Estas evidencias han podido ser inventariadas, estudiadas y datadas en muchos casos. La ganadería, estacional, es la actividad principal relacionada a estas estructuras y son las condiciones ambientales, culturales y económicas las que han ido determinando sus características. Ha sido necesaria una metodología multidisciplinaria que apoyara a la arqueología para ir estudiando desde 1993 los a veces esquivos restos dejados por las personas que han gestionado los recursos de la zona.

The phenomenon of the burials under the stećci, in spite of the long history of research, still deserves additional attention of scholars. These are interments of the deceased in the context of the monumental funerary markers (stećci), highly prominent in the landscape, typical for the period between the 12th and the 16th centuries. This funerary practice is most intense during the 14th and 15th centuries, and there are indications that it occurs even after the 16th century. In the region of the Western Balkans, more than 72 000 monuments have been registered, mainly in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

During the 20th century, when these monuments were interpreted in the culture-historical archaeological key, researchers aimed at identifying a single religious or ethnic group intrinsically linked to this burial practice. Some of the solutions for the attribution of stećci were their ascription to the Bosnian Church, or to the Mediaeval Vlachs. The dedicated researchers, such as Šefik Bešlagić, recognized even under the traditional paradigmatic framework that the phenomenon of stećci is highly complex and that exclusive attribution to one ethnic/religious group is not highly plausible. Subsequently, with the interpretations of Dubravko Lovrenović in the beginning of the 21st century, stećci are interpreted as an interconfessional phenomenon.

While the exclusive attribution to the Bosnian Church is easily refuted on the base of the inscriptions mentioning other confessions, the issue of the Vlachs as the conveyors of this material culture has remained unresolved in certain ways. The solution was sought for in the domain of physical anthropology. Starting from the 1970s, in the papers on the skeletal remains recovered from the necropolises with the stećci, the interpretation is offered that these are homogenous communities, with dominantly brachycranial characteristics, identified as the Dinaric anthropological type. The next interpretive step was to link them to the allegedly autochthonous Medieval non-Slavic Vlachs, understood as an ethnic group deriving from Antiquity or praehistory.

The aim of the present paper is to critically reconsider the methodological core of the argument that the people buried under the stećci were of the Dinaric type, seen as the indigenous population, from the point of view of the history of Yugoslav archaeology.

This paper focuses on a group of relics and their reliquaries that came to Merovingian Gaul from the regions ruled by the Byzantine Empire and its successors around the Eastern Mediterranean. Apart from relics of saints and martyrs such as St Polycarp or St Stephen, the paper focuses particularly on Holy Cross- and St Mary-relics as well as apostle-relics. It is asked under which circumstances relics were transferred to the West, which people were involved in the transfer, and which different avenues for the relics’ dissemination can be identified. The basis for the investigation is a comprehensive survey of the relics of Eastern saints in the Frankish realms that have been documented in writing and / or in physical form. Moreover, the paper outlines the function of the relics within the framework of Byzantine diplomacy.

This study provides an overview of the diplomatic contacts between the Frankish kingdoms of the Merovingians and the Byzantine Empire that can be reconstructed from historical sources. This evidence is supplemented by objects and trade goods that can be deduced from archaeological and written sources and that were exchanged between the eastern Mediterranean region and Central and Western Europe in the 6th and 7th centuries.

Thietmar, the prince-bishop of Merseburg, is renowned for his Chronicon, a source that offers historians an understanding of the affairs of the Saxon Ottonian kings from a contemporary writer who was close to the ruling family. It details not only the interests and affairs of the Ottonian dynasty, but also presents events that directly impacted his diocese of Merseburg, and contains a number of ghost stories. These ghost stories are the focal point of this article, and demonstrate the religious concerns and anxieties held by Thietmar and his contemporaries in the wake of the violence of the Wendish Uprising of 983, which saw the destruction of religious infrastructure in recently conquered territories east of the Elbe, and show how the dead could be used to discuss the sins of the living in the early eleventh-century church.

is an important source for scholars of the Norman demesne in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. The 'Historia' is a chronicle of the history of Normandy, but also details social mores and customs. The 'Historia' also contains wonder tales, and one of these is the focus of this article-the narrative of 'Herlechin's Hunt'. This article addresses a key element of the symbolism of the story that has been largely overlooked by modern scholarship. In doing so, it argues that the narrative is as much about illicit sex and the sexual mores of the monks of Saint-Évroul as it is about anger and violence, as it has traditionally been understood.

The article is devoted to the reconstruction of the 1736 fortification line on Khortytsia Island. The calculations were carried out on the basis of archaeological research conducted in 2018 and 2019 within the framework of the site restoration and museification project. The results of the archaeological research were published in a 2020 article.

Late antiquity has been characterised in multiple conflicting ways -a period of decline, emergence, transformation, tradition, of dynamism or conservatism, of conflict or collaboration. 'Tempests' might seem to align with the more pessimistic readings of the period but might also speak to the ways that storms reshape landscapes, wash away accretions, or enable new life. Through this talk, I will reflect on these larger characterisations of late antiquity by taking education as a case study for changes into the early middle ages. I will investigate how education of different types -ascetic, philosophical, and ascetic -was supposed to form souls and communities. Imagery of storms, tempests, and upheavals are used in different educational contexts both to underline the necessity of ethical formation through education as a means of control and also as an image of the power of education to shape individuals and societies. Taking education as a 'laboratory of culture', I will explore how storms in education can figure wider cultural dynamics.

Predromanička i ranoromanička crkvena plastika iz Biograda nastala je u vrijeme kada je taj grad tijekom ranoga srednjeg vijeka bio važno središte ranosrednjovjekovne hrvatske države na Jadranu. O njegovoj važnosti dovoljno govore i činjenice da je bio centar starohrvatske županije Sidrage te da je u njemu 1102. godine za hrvatskoga kralja okrunjen ugarski kralj Koloman. Međutim, „zlatno doba'“ Biograda nije dugo potrajalo jer su ga već 1125. godine Mlečani osvojiti i u potpunosti razrušiti, pa više nikad neće doseći važnost koju je imao tijekom druge polovine 11. i prve četvrtine 12. stoljeća. Naime, organizirani razvitak Biograda posebno se veže uz hrvatskog kralja Petra Krešimira IV. (1058.-1074.) koji je u gradu krajem pedesetih i tijekom šezdesetih godina 11. stoljeća utemeljio i bogato obdario dva benediktinska samostana – muški Sv. Ivana Evanđelista (kasnije samostan Sv. Kuzme i Damjana na brdu Čokovcu kod Tkona na otoku Pašmanu) i ženski Sv. Tome. Arheološkim istraživanjima na prostoru grada otkriveni su ostaci obiju samostanskih bazilika, kao i biogradske katedrale koja se nalazila na položaju Glavica, istočno od današnje župne crkve Sv. Anastazije. Ostatci biogradske ranosrednjovjekovne skulpture, kao i nekoliko ulomaka romaničke kamene plastike, dominantno su povezani s navedenim trima građevinama, kao i s vremenom u kojem je Biograd doživio vrhunac svoje važnosti u nacionalnoj povijesti. Bez obzira što o toj skulpturi nije puno pisano, te unatoč svim problemima s kojima se suočava bilo koji istraživač koji se tom tematikom bavi (nedostatak pravilnoga dokumentiranja; manjak podataka o vremenu i mjestu pronalaska; disperziranost pronalazaka po gradu, njegovu zaleđu i obližnjim otocima; uništenje u kasnijim razaranjima grada…), uočljiva stilska i ikonografska raznovrsnost skulpture ujedno predstavlja i pravi izazov pri pokušaju njezina stilsko-morfološkoga vrednovanja. Upravo će to i biti cilj ovoga izlaganja, kako bi se u nedostatku većeg broja pisanih vrela, navedeni materijalni izvori što bolje iskoristili u rasvjetljavanju svih aspekata povijesnog, kulturnog i društvenog razvoja Biograda tijekom ranoga i na početku razvijenoga srednjeg vijeka.

Gold and silver jewellery of the type termed »Great Moravian« in current research literature is found in cemeteries from the ninth and the first half of the tenth centuries in areas of the former Czechoslovakia and western Hungary. Since the inter-war period, Czech and Slovakian archaeologists have been concerned with the question of the origin of this jewellery. In this chapter, selected jewellery types are analysed with regard to this question, using the widest possible territorial range. Earrings with four beads made of sheet metal rank among the types of jewellery with supra-regional distribution. Outside Great Moravia, they occur in a large geographical area stretching from Crete to Bornholm. In different regions, examples of this type are characterised by specific features of construction and decoration, but they (more or less) follow Byzantine models. Great Moravian earrings with basket beads made of beaded wire have less numerous parallels in other parts of Europe, but the pair of golden earrings from the Preslav Treasure especially demonstrate that such earrings are by no means a Great Moravian invention. However, we cannot rule out the possibility that some subtypes are genuine Great Moravian products, especially those lacking exact parallels in other parts of Europe, e.g., earrings with a biconical accumulation of basket beads under the lower arc. Finger-rings with hollow hemispherical bezels that are completely covered with coarse granulation are another example of a supra-regional type that spread from the eastern Mediterranean region to southeast, central and eastern Europe.
