[edit]Name
[edit]The Bengali name of "Baranagar" is either Barāhanagar (বরাহনগর BAW-rah-hoh-naw-gohr) or Barānagar (বরানগর BAW-rah-naw-gohr). The name is a compound of barāha (বরাহ, meaning "boar", "hog" or "pig") and nagar (নগর, meaning "city"). There used to be a hog factory at Baranagar in the 17th century, where about 3,000 hogs were slaughtered and salted for export annually.
