I was going to do these earlier, but got bogged down after finding some great music on YouTube. Maybe I’ll do a Videos of the Week down the road for the stuff I was playing on Twitter and personally. Anyway, let’s do a few links before I shut it down for the night.

Hannah Karp at the Wall Street Journal has a great article on how the NFL is gaining traction with the next generation of fans.

Marcus Vanderberg (For some reason, I think of Schenkenberg when I type Marcus’ name) of SportsNewser says the Detroit Lions may not be winners on the field, but certainly are when it comes to social media.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell wonders if the new adidas NBA jerseys are going to be a hit with the public.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union has the NFL Week 3 TV schedule for the New York Capital Region.

Pete also has the college football TV schedule for Week 4.

Tom Jones at the St. Petersburg Times says the Tampa Bay Rays may not be doing well in the Bronx this week, but their ratings on Sun Sports are through the roof.

Helene Elliot of the Los Angeles Times says the Kings will stream their first NHL preseason game on two sites.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News notes that Staples Center is unveiling a new HD scoreboard on Thursday.

Sports Media Watch says CBS received staggering ratings for its late afternoon NFL coverage in Week 2.

SMW says an early afternoon SEC matchup on ESPN last Saturday received high numbers.

SMW notes that ABC’s regional telecast of Texas-Texas Tech Saturday night got good numbers too.

John Daly at the Daly Planet looks at Versus carrying a NASCAR-themed show for a second season.

If you were a regular reader of the old Fire Joe Morgan blog, you’re aware that Ken Tremendous, dak, Junior and the guys targeted Celizic calling him “HatGuy”. The FJM guys reunited at Deadspin on Wednesday and brought back their scathing posts on sports journalism. But as they concluded, Ken Tremendous gave this heartfelt tribute to Celizic who died Wednesday at the age of 61 after a battle with lymphoma. Way to make me feel guilty over the joy I had over the HatGuy posts, KT.

Friday Megalinks

I’m trying something new to get the Friday megalinks in during the day. I hope it works.

As always, we highlight the Weekend Viewing Picks and there are quite a few this weekend.

The PGA Championship, golf’s last major of the year is taking place at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota. CBS is hoping to see Tiger Woods in contention as he has helped raise the network’s golf ratings over the last few weeks. If he’s at or near the top throughout the weekend, then you’ll see the ratings rise significantly. If not, then it’ll be a long weekend for CBS. TNT has early 3rd and final round coverage at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. CBS then joins at 2 p.m. for full 18 hole coverage.

Baseball continues to head towards the pennant races. Fox has three games highlighted by Philadelphia at Atlanta. Neither Joe Buck nor Tim McCarver are working on Saturday meaning that this is not a major showcase weekend in Fox’s mind. Phillies-Braves will also be the ESPN Sunday Night game. MLB Network and TBS will air Boston at Texas for their Saturday night and Sunday afternoon games respectively. And WGN has Pirates at Cubs on Sunday. MLB this weekend including regional splits and announcing assignments for Fox and ESPN are located right here.

The English Premier League returns this weekend and ESPN2 is an addition to the U.S. rightsholders. It will carry a Saturday morning and Monday afternoon game every week. This is part of the deal that ESPN signed with the EPL to carry games in the UK. Setanta Sports and Fox Soccer Channel will continue to carry games here as well. ESPN2′s debut will be Chelsea vs. Hull City at 7:30 a.m., Saturday.

NASCAR heads to Michigan International Speedway and the Carfax 400 which ESPN carries Sunday at 2 p.m.

If you need your football fix, NFL Network has a live exhibition game tripleheader on Saturday. It will carry both the home and away feeds of each game.

NBC has Olympic sports including the VISA Gymnastics Championships where gold medalist Nastia Liukin will participate Saturday night at 8. And there’s the World Track & Field Championships from Berlin which NBC carries Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Versus also has coverage Saturday night at 7.

And in primetime, the season premiere of Mad Men is on AMC, Sunday night at 10.

From the Boston Globe, Chad Finn feels the new 98.5 The Sports Hub had a decent debut and needs some work.

But Christine McConville of the Boston Herald wasn’t impressed.

Newsday’s Neil Best learns that Frank Gifford will be doing taped vignettes for ESPN to celebrate Monday Night Football’s 40th anniversary.

Sunday Stuff

A few things for you today. First, I went to my favorite bar in Seekonk, MA to find it had been sold and taken over by new management. Now, I had heard this was a possibility, but two weeks ago, the old owner had told me that the new liquor license for the potential buyer was rejected and he was going to stay on. This was good news to me because I’m friends with the owner and in general, I don’t like change in my drinking establishments. But last night, I went in and found the new owner there. Luckily, the bartenders I have known for many years were still there. Many of the wait staff were there, but overall, it was a different feeling.

While the new owner had just taken over that week, there was this sad sentiment that an era was over. The new owner will probably clean up the place and give the place the injection it needs, but it was also a feeling that my favorite place will just be a memory now.

As I told the bartenders who have no idea if they’re going to stay, as long as they’re in place and the beer is cold, there’s no reason for me not to come. But it’s also strange to see my friend not in his usual place.

I have had my favorite bars come and go. It’s been said once your home bar closes, you become lost until you find a new one. It’s happened to me three times and it’ll probably happen again before I die. But as long as this place in Seekonk remains and the bartenders remain, I still have a place to go on Saturdays.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post says Yankee radio broadcasts have gotten out of hand with in-game ads. Not the ones played in-between innings, but ones that John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman have to read in-between pitches.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News gives it to the NBA for signing a cable-heavy TV contract at the expense of network games. He says it’s resulted in lower ratings for the NBA Finals.

Newsday’s Neil Best says the New York Islanders are pioneers for giving a section at their games for bloggers. And in his blog, Best says while sports leagues hate short series, sportswriters love them.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News looks into the NBA ratings.
