Some Thursday Sports Media Thoughts
Usually, I write the sports media thoughts in bed on the iPad, but as I have some free time and I don’t want to lose my trains of thought. As usual, they come in bullet form.
- Finally, ESPN has decided to dial back its Tim Tebow obsession. In my last sports media thoughts post, I compared the network’s constant harping on Tebow to Inside Edition’s daily reporting of Lindsay Lohan. Now, we’re seeing a change in position from ESPN management. In Monday’s edition of Sports Business Daily, John Ourand quoted network president John Skipper as saying that he’s instructed producers to dial back its Tebow coverage. And that’s for the good. Having Skipper reflect on the coverage is also good. It shows that he’s willing to admit that he’s wrong and not fall back on the “We’re doing this for the fans,” argument when the whole thing is about driving ratings. Now we await the next ESPN obsession.
- Speaking of the ESPN obsession, has the network taken the “embrace debate” thing way too far? On today’s edition of “First Take” on ESPN2, Rob Parker took a subject way too far when he questioned whether DC NFL Team quarterback Robert Griffin III was “a brother or a cornball brother,” meaning he wasn’t really African-American. And it took Stephen A. Smith of all people to be a Voice of Reason wondering why Parker even went there. It’s one thing to debate topics, but then to come up with silly things like this is beyond belief. Maybe this is another idea that John Skipper can reassess and do it quickly.
- The Big East is dead. Actually, it’s been dead for years, we just didn’t know it. With the pending withdrawal of seven Catholic basketball schools today, the heart of the conference will be cut out. The conference has been treading water since the ACC, Big Ten and Big 12 have been picking off its carcass over the last few years. And with schools like Boston College, Louisville, Miami, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, etc. leaving the league for more money and hoped stability, the Big East has slowly flatlining. Now this move by the basketball-only schools to leave and possibly form their own conference with five Atlantic Ten schools will officially declare the Big East dead. Yes, UConn can attempt to lead and hold the banner for the conference, but it won’t be same. This is all about TV money and Survival of the Fittest. Right now, the Big East is on the wrong side of the college sports evolution chart.
- I have not seen any official word from CBS yet, but Advertising Age reports that the Tiffany Network will stream Super Bowl XLVII from New Orleans online. This follows NBC’s initial streaming of the Big Game last year. CBS had sought to stream Super Bowl XLIV, but at that time was turned down by the NFL. CBS will not promote this as an alternative way for viewers to watch the game, but as a second screen, giving fans the opportunity to see angles not provided on the television broadcast. It also gives CBS the chance to sell more ads and make money. It’s all about the money.
We’re finished with the thoughts.
NBC Sports Network Signs Nine Year Deal with Atlantic 10 Conference
Wrapping up the A-10 Conference deals from yesterday, we have this press release from NBC Sports announcing that NBC Sports Network will begin carrying A-10 basketball games this season. For the 2012-13 season, NBCSN will air six games involving A-10 teams, but next season is where the network will increase its commitment to the conference.
For 2013-14, NBC Sports Network will have a total of 25 regular season men’s basketball games, three women’s basketball games and the quarterfinals of both basketball tournaments. So it means that the final three days of the A-10 Tournament for both the men’s and women’s tournaments will be on national television.
In addition, NBC Sports Network will be able to stream A-10 games it carries on the NBC Sports Live mobile and tablet apps. And some A-10 games will aired exclusively on Comcast SportsNet affiliates across the country.
Here’s the A-10/NBC Sports announcement.

Overall, ESPN will get 14 men’s basketball games and two women’s games. Many will be aired on ESPNU while a handful will be aired either on ESPN or ESPN2.
ESPN also retains the rights to the A-10′s Women’s Basketball Championship game.

The strong brand association between the A-10 and ESPN has enabled the conference to showcase its basketball and sports inventory on one of the best sports media networks in the world.”
More coming up.
A-10 Conference Renews Deal With CBS Sports Network
As part of a multi-tiered media rights deal with three networks, the Atlantic 10 Conference has announced a renewal of its contract with CBS Sports Network. This provides CBSSN with at least 25 regular season men’s basketball games and a handful of women’s games.
This also provides CBS Sports Network with the rights to the semifinals to the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments which will both be held at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
The new deal begins with the 2013-14 season and lasts through the 2020-21 campaign. CBS Sports Network has been airing A-10 basketball since the 2010-11 season.
Here’s the joint announcement from the A-10 and CBS Sports Network.
CBS SPORTS NETWORK EXTENDS ATLANTIC 10 PARTNERSHIP WITH NEW LONG-TERM DEAL THROUGH 2020-21 SEASON
Deal Provides for Extensive National College Basketball Coverage on CBS Sports Network
CBS Sports Network has extended its partnership with the Atlantic 10 agreeing to a new long-term deal through the 2020-21 season, it was announced today.
The agreement with CBS Sports Network provides for significant national exposure for men’s and women’s basketball including-regular season and championship coverage. Through the deal, CBS Sports Network will get high-quality conference and non-conference game selections, and will air more national A-10 basketball games than any other television network.
CBSSN will air at least 25 regular-season men’s games and eight women’s games annually, as well as the men’s and women’s semi-finals of the Atlantic 10 Championship. CBS Sports has broadcast the A-10 Men’s Championship since 2010.
“The Atlantic 10 has been a terrific partner and we’re proud to continue showcasing action from one of the top college basketball conferences for many years,” said Dan Weinberg, Senior Vice President, Programming, CBS Sports Network. “Our partnership has been an unquestioned success. And with the quality of basketball throughout the conference now stronger than ever, we’re excited to annually feature an extensive line-up of games.”
“I am excited to begin this new long-term agreement with CBS Sports Network. The Atlantic 10 Conference was one of the first Division I conferences to partner with CBS Sports Network, and we have built a strong partnership of trust, growing together while building a national brand,” stated Bernadette V. McGlade, Commissioner. “The opportunity to televise all A-10 sporting events on the CBS Sports Network nationally markedly enhances our distribution, delivering A-10 basketball to many more alums and fans, and extends the A-10 brand in every media market of the league.”
CBS Sports Network again will showcase comprehensive Atlantic 10 college basketball action for the 2012-13 season featuring 44 total games; 34 men’s and 10 women’s. The Atlantic 10 and CBS Sports Network first entered into its partnership for the 2006-07 athletic season.

A More Than A Few Thursday Night Links
Well, U.S. Open has been the dominant sports story of the day. As much as I enjoy criticizing ESPN, I will give the network praise today for live online coverage of the U.S. Open and the Euro 2008 soccer tournament. Through ESPN360, I was able to keep track of the Open and Croatia-Germany thanks to a couple of mouse clicks. And thanks to U.S. Open’s website, I could watch NBC’s coverage of the tournament when it went on the air. And unlike ESPN360 which would air promos and ads, U.S. Open.com would just cutaway to a shot of the Pacific Ocean, sometimes catching off-air comments like Johnny Miller patting himself on the back for noticing Tiger Woods grimace during his golf swing.
Overall, it was a fun day to keep track of sports online. And some of the bigger events to watch online while you’re at work (make sure you get your work done before watching sports at your office) in the next two months include Wimbledon, the Open Championship and of course, the Summer Olympics in Communist China.
The one drawback from ESPN’s multi-platform coverage was during its US Open Extra program between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. If you’re going to promise wall-to-wall coverage of golf’s toughest test, give us full coverage during your US Open Extra program. Don’t overload it with ads and features while Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott are ready to tee off at 7. Yes, there’s online coverage on ESPN360, but not everyone has access to ESPN’s broadband service, so throw viewers a bone.
Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union agrees with my assessment.
The Sports Media Watch has the ratings of the U.S. Open since 1998.
Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News writes in his blog that ESPN has set things up rather nicely for some ratings records for the U.S. Open.
Tim Lemke of the Washington Times says putting the U.S. Open in primetime will be an interesting experiment.
Darren Rovell of CNBC likes the logo for this year’s U.S. Open tournament.
Awful Announcing says the US Open Extra program got ESPN off to a confusing start. AA also has video from Turn Back the Clock Day at Wrigley Field and on WGN-TV.
Jim Williams of the DC/Baltimore Examiner says Jim McKay was truly a nice man.
Newsday’s Neil Best suggests to ESPN Classic that it air Game 6 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals. But Neil later discovers that ESPN has no intention to air the NBA classic.
Chris Pursell of TV Week wonders where Michael Strahan will end up, Fox, NFL Network, CBS or NBC.
Richard Durrett of the Dallas Morning News writes that Texas Rangers outfielder Milton Bradley tried to confront Kansas City Royals TV broadcaster Ryan Lefebvre over comments he made last night.
Maury Brown of the Biz of Baseball says MLB.com will be releasing a new widget for the iPhone 3G when it comes out next month.
John Eggerton of Broadcasting & Cable writes that ESPN is buying a high school sports website.
Broadcasting Engineering talks about some new wrinkles in ESPN’s MLB telecasts.
Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News says the A-10′s biggest challenge especially for new league commissioner Bernadette McGlade, is the conference’s TV contract with CBS College Sports.
That will do it for now. The Friday megalinks should be up sometime around noon.
Time For Tuesday Links
It’s Tuesday and time for some links. We have reaction to the Roger Clemens press conference and the breaking news in which Joe Gibbs suddenly resigned as coach and President of the Washington Redskins.
First, we have Richard Sandomir of the New York Times who says in just a short 24 hour period, we saw the edited and raw versions of Roger Clemens.
Newsday’s Neil Best writes that Roger Clemens has become a compelling figure. In his blog, Neil links to a SI.com story in which former Newsday reporter Jon Heyman sat with Brian McNamee while 60 Minutes was on (you can go to Heyman’s story here as well). And Neil expands on a tidbit in his column about Tony Kornheiser planning to return to Monday Night Football, at least for now.
Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News says Giants coach Tom Coughlin has silenced his TV and radio critics.
It’s nice to have Jim Williams writing on a regular schedule again. The DC/Baltimore Examiner sports media writer blogs today that Washington TV and radio stations will be all over Joe Gibbs’ press conference later today.
The Baltimore Sun’s Ray Frager writes in his Medium Well blog that Cris Collinsworth worked well with Tom Hammond during NBC’s coverage of the Washington-Seattle game.
Dave Del Grande of the Oakland Tribune says the Patriots-Giants game last month was a commercial bonanza for CBS, NBC and the NFL Network.
In the Chicago Tribune, Ed Sherman gives some hope for Big Ten fans, Comcast and the Big Ten Network appear close to an agreement.
The Sports Media Watch says going into last night’s BCS Championship Game, Fox Sports has seen lower ratings for the Sugar, Fiesta and Orange Bowls.
CNBC’s Darren Rovell wonders what affect the NCAA’s Death Penalty had on Southern Methodist University. In the mid-1980′s, the NCAA took away scholarships and bowl appearances from its football program after SMU was found guilty of multiple recruiting and other violations.
Jennifer Wielgus of the Bucks County Courier Times says ESPN has pulled its programming from a local radio station. And Bob Cooney of the Philadelphia Daily News says the format change will not affect LaSalle basketball games which are broadcast on the station.
Curt Cavin of the Indianapolis Star reports on a three way radio competition for sports fans during afternoon drive time.
The Providence Journal’s Paul Kenyon chronicles how the URI-Dayton game went from a non-televised game to being shown nationally and in the local markets.

Laura Nachman has statements galore from KYW-TV, Alycia Lane’s attorney and from various news outlets on the firing of the lovely Alycia.
That will do it for now. Back later.
It’s a Saturday Morning Thing
Time to give you some links this morning. I’ll have the NFL Wild Card Playoff Picks coming up.

Ray Buck of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram talks to Pat Summerall about Michael Irvin’s return to the airwaves and about his own performance in the Cotton Bowl.
Newsday’s Neil Best says the college football bowl season is really irrelevant.
Jim Williams of the DC/Baltimore Examiner is back on a regular writing schedule and we’re glad for that. In his blog, Williams has quotes from NBC’s John Madden about the Wild Card playoffs and has more about ESPN’s and Comcast SportsNet’s coverage of the Redskins.
Pete Dougherty of the Albany (NY) Times Union writes in his Best Seat in My House blog about ESPN reporting scores from events it covers and failing to provide scores from events it does not.
Alan Pergament in today’s Buffalo News has some leftovers from the NHL Winter Classic. In his story, Pergament refers to “A guy with a raspy voice who appears on cable’s SportsNet New York” and that guy is Scott Ferrall who appears nightly on Sirius Satellite Radio on Howard 101.
Katie Walsh of the Sandusky (OH) Register writes that a local sports bar is suing DirecTV for charging him to show the Patriots-Giants game while the game was free all over town on CBS and NBC. And the bar’s owner says he lost money because the game was no longer exclusive to the NFL Network and not as many patrons came into his place because of it. I don’t see other sports bar suing.
Michael Learmonth of the Silicon Valley Insider blog explains why the TV networks pay so much money to air the NFL.
An editorial in today’s Berkshire (MA) Eagle criticizes the NFL Network for playing games with cable.
Rick Bozich of the Louisville Courier-Journal talks with CBS’ Billy Packer about the Louisville Cardinals’ chances of advancing into the NCAA Tournament.
Paul Kenyon, college basketball writer extraordinaire for the Providence Journal, writes that next Wednesday’s game involving my University of Rhode Island Rams and the Dayton Flyers, a matchup of two Top 25 teams, will be on TV in both markets. It originally was not scheduled to be televised anywhere, but A-10 conference TV rights holder CSTV has finally relented to having the game carried locally.
Ben Grossman of Broadcasting & Cable has some requests for TV networks and sports leagues for 2008.
Anthony Crupi of Mediaweek tells us that USA Network topped all cable networks for viewing in 2007, but ESPN and TBS finished in 3rd and 4th based on Monday Night Football and the MLB postseason respectively.
Gayle MacDonald of the Toronto Globe and Mail previews a new drama on CBC called “MVP” which is described as a sexy, primetime soap opera based on life in the NHL, with a few added twists.
And that’s it for now. NFL Picks coming up.
Our Saturday Linkage
A bit of snow covering the ground this morning. Not much as we got enough snow to wreak havoc on the afternoon commute on Friday, but as I look out my window, the snow actually leaves a pretty picture. Perhaps I’ll take one and post it here later. But first, time to give you some links. Also, I’m halfway through my Amazing Race Asia 2 recap for Episode 3 so expect that coming sometime today.
To our weekly Saturday media columns, we start with Dallas Morning News columnist Barry Horn who writes that the Bowl Championship Series, no matter how flawed the system is, will draw ratings. Horn also talks with HBO Boxing judge Harold Lederman.

CSTV, which had a really restrictive TV contract with the A-10 conference, has eased up a bit and signed a new deal to syndicate basketball games to regional sports networks (mostly on Comcast-owned RSN’s) in the conference’s geographic area. Last season, CSTV prevented many games from being aired because it had exclusivity and wouldn’t sell them to local channels. Now with this new contract, 32 men’s basketball games will be carried in the syndication package in addition to some 30 games that will be aired on CSTV. That’s much better. Here’s the press release from CSTV.
