Cape Fear River, 202 mi/325 km long, E central N.C.; formed by the junction of the Deep and Haw rivers at Haywood (Lee and Chatham co. line); flows SE past Lillington, Fayetteville, Elizabethtown, and Wilmington, where it turns S as an estuary, enters Atlantic Ocean 3 mi/4.8 km W of Cape Fear. Carolina Beach and Corncake inlets form E outlets to Atlantic Ocean. Longest river entirely within N.C. Dams and locks make the river navigable to Fayetteville, N.C.; its estuary forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway. During the colonial period the river was a main route to the interior. Receives Northeast Cape Fear R. from N at Wilmington; receives Black R. from NW 10 mi/16 km NW of Wilmington. |
