High Sheriff
A Thousand Year Tradition: The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown and has its roots at least 1,000 years ago.
Formerly the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial.
Originally the High Sheriff held many of the powers now vested in High Court judges, magistrates, local authorities and coroners. Todayâs duties include attendance at Royal visits to the county, escorting judges when on circuit in the county and acting as returning officer for parliamentary elections.
The High Sheriff changes every April.
The High Sheriff for Cheshire in 2006/07 is: Mr David Briggs Dukenfield Hall Mobberley Knutsford WA 16 7PT
