“If any people think of me, choose to think of me, I should like them to say that this man with all his mind and heart loved India and the Indian people, and they were indulgent to him and gave him all their love most abundantly and extravagantly.” … Jawaharlal Nehru (Speech, Madras, 9 October 1952)

The Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Archives was set up in 1964 with the family papers of Jawaharlal Nehru. It now has over 1000 collections of personal papers of eminent leaders, freedom fighters, politicians, educationists, scientists, jurists and industrialists who contributed to the making of modern India and institutional records, acquired from different parts of India and abroad.
NMML's collections of personal papers include the private papers of M. K. Gandhi, C. Rajgopalachari, B. C. Roy, Jayaprakash Narayan, Charan Singh, Sarojini Naidu and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur.

In the list of institutional records, one can find papers of the All India Congress Committee; All India Hindu Mahasabha; All India Trade Union Congress; Indian Merchants' Chamber and D.A.V. College Trust and Management Society.

The records in the Archives comprise original letters, writings, speeches, notes, memoirs and diaries besides handwritten documents, typed documents, press clippings and printed material.

The Archival holdings also include 838 transcripts of the Oral History interviews relating to the social and political development of modern India with special reference to our freedom struggle. Some of the important transcripts of the interviews are those of Abdul Ghaffar Khan, T. T. Krishnamachari, J. B. Kripalani, Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya, K. N. Katju, H. V. Kamath, I. K.Gujral and Jyoti Basu.

The Archives is the largest repository in the country of primary and non-official source material for historical research on modern Indian history. In order to ensure the preservation of this wealth of knowledge, the NMML is currently undertaking a digitization process that would make the material more easily accessible to all those who would like to use the NMML archives for their research.

The primary objectives of digitization are the preservation of rare documents, to improve accessibility to in - house personnel, library members and scholars, to enhance searchability and to make the digitized information available on the internet.
