Pac-12 Conference Announces Formation of Pac-12 Networks

Once again, you must credit Pac-12 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott for thinking outside the box. Instead of signing one company to run a Pac-12 Network, Scott gets four companies on board to create six regional sports networks that will offered inside the conference and a national network to be offered outside the league’s West Coast footprint. We’re talking Bright House, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable. For now, I’ll post the press release. Later, we’ll analyze what this all means.

NEW YORK –In an innovative arrangement providing unprecedented exposure for its athletic and academic programs, the Pac-12 Conference announced today the creation of Pac-12 Networks, which will include a national network and six regional networks, in conjunction with four of the nation’s largest cable operators: Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks.

In addition to broadly distributing the Pac-12 Networks, the four cable operators are utilizing iN DEMAND to provide certain production and operations services to the Pac-12 Networks, which will continue to be wholly owned by the Pac-12 Conference.

This innovative deal demonstrates the strengths of the cable platform, and the unique ability we have to provide deep local, regional and national programming on multiple platforms and multiple devices – giving our customers the ability to watch their favorite teams anywhere. We are pleased to be associated with these leading universities, and look forward to working with them and the Conference to make this innovative arrangement a success.�?

The six regional networks will be established in Northern California, Southern California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Mountain regions.

The deal complements a major national broadcast and cable agreement announced in May. At that time, the Conference announced the creation of Pac-12 Media Enterprises, the first step in creating the TV networks that are being announced today. Pac-12 Media Enterprises is also expected to eventually announce distribution arrangements covering satellite and telco transmission.

Regional and National Network Programming
Under the agreement announced today, Pac-12 Networks eventually will telecast a total of 850 live events annually – 350 on the national feed and 500 on the regional feeds — including every football game and every men’s basketball game that isn’t carried by national telecast partners. Additional events will include spring football, and every sport played by Pac-12 programs including all conference championships. Pac-12 also will be working to launch additional content on broadband.

The agreement will provide unprecedented exposure for women’s sports, as well as exposure for both men’s and women’s programs that have been traditionally underserved on television.  This includes extensive coverage of Pac 12 athletes in Olympic sports, where the Pac-12 has had more success than any other U.S. conference. Over 200 Pac-12 athletes competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and if the Pac-12 were its own country it would have finished sixth in the total medal count.

Pac 12 Networks will feature extensive educational, academic and lifestyle programming from the Pac-12 Institutions, some of the most renowned and recognizable higher education institutions in the world. Programming will extend beyond athletics to other subjects of interest to students, faculty, alumni and fans of the Pac-12 universities.

Through this agreement Pac-12 Networks will be available nationwide to almost 40 million cable customers. Within the Pac-12 Conference’s six-state footprint, Pac-12 Networks will be broadly distributed and available to Pac-12’s far-flung alumni and fans across the country.

Terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

NFL Network Renews Deal with Cox Communications

This just in from the NFL Network, the channel has renewed its carriage deal with Cox Communications. In addition, subscribers will gain access to NFL RedZone. It’s the third agreement in a week for NFL Network having signed with the National Cable Television Cooperative and Suddenlink. Now Cox has re-signed with NFL Network. Here’s the announcement.

Cox Advanced TV customers will have access to NFL RedZone

ATLANTA & LOS ANGELES – Cox Communications and NFL Network announced today that Cox Advanced TV customers will have the option of subscribing to NFL RedZone  this fall when football season kicks off.

NFL RedZone, produced by NFL Network, whips around every NFL game on Sunday afternoons delivering touchdowns and the most exciting moments as they happen.  When a team goes inside the 20-yard line, fans see the crucial plays live.  NFL RedZone keeps fans up-to-date in real time switching from game to game with live look-ins, highlights, fantasy statistics and a chance to see every important play. Cox Advanced TV customers who subscribe to the Sports and Information Pak will have the ability to add the new channel for $39.99 per season.

In addition to adding NFL RedZone, Cox and NFL Network have also renewed their deal for long term carriage of NFL Network, the only channel dedicated entirely to the NFL and football.

“We’re excited to bring our customers even more football action this fall with the addition of NFL RedZone,�? said Kathy Payne, vice president of programming for Cox. “In addition to NFL Network, which offers the excitement of the NFL, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, customers can access additional NFL content via Cox’s On DEMAND library, making Cox a great value for NFL action this season.�?

 “Cox, the third largest cable operator, has always been an important distributor of NFL Network and now its subscribers will also have access to one of the most innovative and exciting channels on television, NFL RedZone,�? said John Malkin, vice president of affiliate distribution for NFL Network.

NFL RedZone returns for its sophomore season in 2010, following a breakout rookie debut in which the channel was called “The greatest invention in the history of mankind�? by Sports Illustrated and had the Denver Post singing its praises, describing the channel as “By far, the most innovative sports television creation in 2009 – or even the decade.�? In addition, NFL RedZone earned a 2009 Emmy nomination for Outstanding New Approaches in Sports Programming.

NFL Network is the destination for more than 2000 live hours of football programming each year. Thursday Night Football, NFL Network’s package of eight live, primetime regular season games, headlines the network’s live game coverage, which also includes 10 live NFL preseason games 21 Arena Football League games, 14 Canadian Football League games, and the Under Armour Senior Bowl. Additionally, NFL Network is on the scene at the NFL’s biggest annual events including Kickoff, Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, Hall of Fame ceremony, Scouting Combine and NFL Draft. All this coverage comes in addition to the network’s year-round  schedule that includes nearly 200 NFL games, every preseason games, 96 game replays past Super Bowls and NFL Classic Games.

BREAKING NEWS: Big Ten Network Carves Deal with Cox

Two in one day for the Big Ten Network. While Cox Communications does not have a huge presence in the Midwest, it does have subscribers in suburban Cleveland. Here’s the announcement:

Cox Launches the Big Ten Network in Ohio in Time for Buckeye Football Season

PARMA, Ohio and Chicago – Cox Communications announced that it has reached an agreement to carry the Big Ten Network in time for the start of the 2008-09 football season. The Big Ten Network is now available on Cox Channel 62 and on Channel 724 in high definition and is available to all Cox cable subscribers in the Cleveland area. The channel position may change later this fall to align the network with other sports programming.

“Cox is pleased to be able to offer the Big Ten Network,�? said Anne Doris, vice president and general manager of Cox Cleveland. “The Buckeye State has many Big Ten fans, and we worked diligently to negotiate the best deal for our customers.�?

Big Ten Network President Mark Silverman said the network is looking forward to welcoming Cox subscribers. “We’re thrilled that Cox in Cleveland is joining the long and growing list of distribution partners offering the Big Ten Network to their customers,�? Silverman said. “When fans tune in, they’ll find unparalleled coverage of Big Ten and Buckeye sports – they’ll see more action and more in-depth analysis than ever before.�?

Cox serves almost 150,000 service subscribers in 10 suburbs on Cleveland’s west side. The Big Ten Network is expected to broadcast three of the first five Ohio State University games this season including this Saturday against Youngstown State University, September 20 against Troy and September 27 against Minnesota.

So the Big Ten Network is quickly working to get its channel on in time for the Saturday season openers. It’s carrying 7 games this Saturday, including six at noon ET.

Your Sunday Links

Last night, my computer went on the fritz again, but I have it back for now, but I wonder just for how long? I’m backing it up on Carbonite, but it’s a rather long process. I just hope I can back up everything before the computer dies for good.

A personal note before we get started. If you were at a sports bar or at home watching the Yankees-Red Sox game on Fox, you know that the game had a two hour and 11 minute rain delay at Fenway Park. As the game was encroaching on Fox’s NASCAR window, announcer Joe Buck mentioned that the game was going to be moved to FX while the main network would show the start of the Subway Fresh Fit 500. However, as I was watching at a sports bar in Seekonk, MA, this announcement was not heard as music was playing and another sporting event’s volume was up. All of a sudden, the game switched. People yelled, the bartender tried to find FX and by the time she did, the game was over. People were angry. So what happened?

Neil Best of Newsday has a story in today’s paper. But he has a better explanation in his blog. As Neil writes, Fox should have given further advance notice with on-air graphics instead of a verbal warning. By the time the game had been switched, the final out had been made. Granted, it was not as bad as NBC switching the Jets-Raiders game in 1968 to the movie, “Heidi” and missing out on two touchdowns, but fans were not served by Fox in this situation. And Bruce Allen of Boston Sports Media Watch shares his frustration over the switch.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post feels ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike in the Morning Show is nothing but a four hour infomerical for ESPN. Did Phil just come to this conclusion?

This won’t make Phil happy at all as American Forces Network will pick up Mike & Mike for the troops stationed overseas.

Bob Raissman of the New York Daily News says the New York Yankees should point the finger at themselves for scheduling a night game last Monday night before traveling to Kansas City the following day for a day game.

Mark Scott of the Manhattan (KS) Mercury says Cox cable subscribers will not be getting the full compliment of Kansas City Royals games this season. Mitch Sherman of the Omaha (NE) World-Herald says Cox’s move is leaving fans frustrated.

The Goldsboro (NC) News-Argus says the TV program known as “NCAA on Campus” will be coming to Mount Olive College to tape a segment on the school’s baseball team.
