Some Early Monday Morning Sports Media Thoughts

by , under Australian Open, CBS Sports, Dial-Global, ESPN2, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, NFL, NFL Today, Super Bowl, Tennis, Tennis Channel, TV Ratings, Westwood One Radio

Time for some sports media thoughts once again. I owe you some since I wasn’t able to do them after last Monday’s post. As always, they come in bullet form.

  • Since I was out for most of the afternoon on Sunday, I missed the Pregame coverage and 3/4 of the AFC Championship Game, but I was able to see the entire 4th quarter and watched all of the NFC Championship. From what I saw of the AFC Championship Game, I thought CBS did a decent job, but there was a glaring omission in the last minute.

First, by not having a rules analyst like Fox with Mike Pereira, CBS really didn’t delve into whether a ruled incompletion thrown by Joe Flacco to Lee Evans should have been reviewed or discussed whether it was an incompletion in the first place. As it was later explained later, it was ruled correctly, but not until after CBS went off the air.

And CBS never tried to get an answer as to why Ravens place kicker Billy Cundiff ran onto the field late, influencing his missed game tying field goal attempt. Jim Nantz didn’t even mention Cundiff’s tardiness as it was happening. And the NFL Today postgame show didn’t discuss either issue.

For the NFC Championship, Fox was on its game from the call of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, to key replays showing that 49ers punt returner Kyle Williams muffed fielding a kick when the ball glanced off his knee. Replays were very conclusive. I thought Fox had one of its best broadcasts of the season and it ended the 2011-12 NFL campaign by going out in top.

CBS could have done a better job by servicing its viewers at the end of the game.

  • Thanks to its third overtime in the last five NFC Championship Games, I expect Fox to get a huge viewership number, somewhere near 60 million viewers. I’m not kidding. If records were set for the NFL Wild Card and Divisional Playoffs, why not for Championship Sunday?

And NBC has to love having the New England Patriots and the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI. With two teams with national followings, plus a rematch of Super Bowl XLII, I think another viewership record will be broken this year for the Big Game.

  • Two changes on the national radio coverage of the NFL. First, Westwood One has been officially taken over by Dial Global. The two companies merged last year, but earlier this month, Westwood One was rebranded as Dial Global Sports.

In addition, Dial Global’s broadcasts of the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl are no longer blacked out in the home markets. In Boston, Dial Global affiliate WEEI aired the AFC Championship opposite New England Patriots radio flagship WBZ-FM. And WEEI will air the Dial Global’s feed of the Super Bowl as well. So stations that carry Dial Global’s NFL schedule won’t have to stop with the Divisional Playoffs in case the team in their local market makes it to the Conference Championship and beyond.

  • Being a tennis fan, I am loving the combined Tennis Channel/ESPN2 coverage of the Australian Open. I also love as a DirecTV subscriber having six channels to choose from, either the network coverage, or individual court channels showing commercial-free, uninterrupted action.

A couple of complaints. ESPN2 could spend some more time showing live matches instead of constant talking from the set. I don’t mind postmatch interviews with players, but sometimes, ESPN2 falls into the trap of too much discussion while matches are underway.

We are definitely missing Mary Carillo in Melbourne. For some reason, she chose to take this year’s Australian Open off and her presence has been missed. I do love having Tracy Austin on Tennis Channel this year and I hope she’ll be used during the French Open. And could John McEnroe be borrowed from Fox Sports Australia for ESPN2 or Tennis Channel? He’s been missed also.

That will do it. Enjoy your Monday.

Churning Out Some MLK Day Linkage

by , under 3-D, Australian Open, CBS Sports, College Baseball, College Basketball, College Gameday, Comcast SportsNet, Dial-Global, ESPN, ESPN Radio, ESPN3.com, Fox Sports, Heidi Watney, Jim Nantz, Joe Buck, Keith Olbermann, MLB Network, NESN, NFL, NFL Today, NHL, Red Sox, Ron Franklin, Sports Talk Radio, Tim Tebow, TV Ratings, Westwood One Radio

Let’s do some linkage on this MLK Day, a holiday for some of you.

We’ll begin with a story from an unusual source, Newsweek/The Daily Beast. Nick Summers of Newsweek writes about how ESPN’s subscriber fees could force cable providers to place the network on pay tiers.

Michael Hiestand at USA Today reports that CBS wants Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow as a guest analyst for The NFL Today before Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.

Hiestand delves into the overnight ratings for NFL Divisional Playoffs Sunday.

Mike McCarthy at USA Today notes that several TV analysts and national radio hosts ripped the officiating in yesterday’s New York Giants-Green Bay Packers NFL Divisional Playoff Game.

Ben Grossman at Broadcasting & Cable says filmmaker Peter Berg who’s “On Freddie Roach” series premieres on HBO this week, wants to produce a similar series on Washington State head football coach Mike Leach.

Michael Malone from B&C tells us that Sunbeam-owned TV stations in Boston and Miami were pulled from DirecTV forcing viewers to scramble to find ways to watch yesterday’s NFL action and the Golden Globe Awards.

Alex Weprin at TVNewser says Current TV host Keith Olbermann went to visit MLB Network, which housed his former MSNBC offices and found some interesting mementos.

Dan Fogarty at SportsGrid has video of a Chicago Blackhawks fan professing his love for Comcast SportsNet reporter Sarah Kustok.

Brandon Costa from Sports Video Group looks at how the College of Charleston produces its own basketball telecasts for ESPN3 and local TV affiliates.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell doesn’t like how colleges and universities are restricting their student-athletes from using social media.

The Tennis Times has a video giving us an inside look at the Australian Open Media Day.

Dan Lamothe of the Springfield Republican’s Red Sox Monster blog notes that former NESN Red Sox reporter Heidi Watney returns to New England next month for a charity auction.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times looks at the Tim Tebow TV phenomenon.

Phil Mushnick of the New York Post is not a fan of Daryl “Moose” Johnston.

Pete Dougherty at the Albany Times Union notes that the Dial Global/Westwood One broadcasts of the NFL Conference Games will be heard locally.

Keith Groller of the Allentown (PA) Morning Call says a local talk show host is heading to Motown.

David Zurawik of the Baltimore Sun actually praises CBS’ production of the Houston-Baltimore game.

The Washington Post’s Sally Jenkins conducted the first interview with former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno since the Jerry Sandusky scandal broke.

Sally also answered readers questions on the interview and how she got Paterno to speak with her.

Jim Williams of the Washington Examiner talks with ESPN tennis analyst Darren Cahill about the Australian Open.

The Tampa Bay Times’ Tom Jones reviews the weekend in sports television.

Also from the Times, Eric Deggans wonders why news anchors were doing promos for a local Monster Truck event.

One more from the Times, Laura Keeley says Florida State fans lined up to be part of ESPN’s College GameDay’s appearance on campus on Saturday.

At the Houston Chronicle, David Barron isn’t a fan of the two minute commercial CBS gave to Subway during The NFL Today postgame show yesterday.

Mel Bracht of the Daily Oklahoman reports that ESPN has settled a wrongful termination lawsuit put forth by former play-by-play man Ron Franklin.

Bob Wolfley from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writes that the NFL insiders were reporting on possible Packers coaching news yesterday.

In Crain’s Chicago Business, Ed Sherman looks at the 20th anniversary of sports talk radio in the Windy City with several local personalities.

To the Denver Post where Dusty Saunders talks with CBS’ Jim Nantz about the demise of the Broncos and Tim Tebow on Saturday.

Dawn C. Chmielewski of the Los Angeles Times looks at how ESPN is trying to push 3-D on the unwanting American people.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News talks with ESPN Radio LA host Marcellus Wiley about his acute memory loss and also has his 20th annual bests and worsts in SoCal sports talk radio.

Tom has more with Marcellus in his blog.

Tom also has his SoCal sports calendar for the week.

Bruce Dowbiggin at the Toronto Globe and Mail notes how slow motion has revolutionized sports television.

Matt Yoder of Awful Announcing is echoing what I’ve been saying the last couple of weeks, and that he’s becoming a fan of Joe Buck.

Sports Media Watch also looks at the ratings of the New York Football Giants and Green Bay Packers on Fox.

The Wiz of Odds looks into ESPN allegedly taking credit for a story originally reported by someone outside of the network. Thanks to The Big Lead for the link.

Joe Favorito wonders what’s next for Tim Tebow both as a player and as a marketer.

And that will conclude our linkage for today.

This past weekend was spent preparing for my sister’s baby shower and then grilling for those in attendance so I was very busy after posting last Friday’s megalinks. My apologies for not being able to blog as I wanted this past weekend, but I do appreciate your patience. Let’s get to the linkage as we have quite a few stories to provide today.

First, USA Today’s Michael Hiestand reports that Fox Sports will unveil their NFL announcing lineup today with a few revamps and reboots, but nothing new in their top three teams.

John Ourand at Sports Business Journal notes that talks with potential suitors are heating up on the new Thursday Night Football package.

Dan Rafael of ESPN.com writes that boxer Manny Pacquaio’s next fight will be heading back to HBO after a one bout hiatus to Showtime.

Anthony Crupi of Adweek notes that while the NFL lockout was ongoing, advertisers still continued to buy commercials on the networks showing their confidence that there would be a season.

Over to Kristi Dosh, the SportsBizMiss, in the Business of College Sports who looks at ESPN’s contract for the Longhorn Network.

Dan Fogarty of SportGrid notes that Stephen A. “A is for Anguish” Smith increased his vocal volume over Tiger Woods’ former caddie, Steve Williams jumping for joy over helping Adam Scott win over the weekend.

Timothy Burke at SportsGrid has video of yesterday’s NASCAR Countdown pre-race show which was a complete mess.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell feels college football coaches who ban their team from tweeting are missing the point.

Jim Romanesko at the Poynter Institute has former Los Angeles Times NBA beat writer Mark Heisler writing about how he was laid off from the paper and how he was not too unhappy about it.

Cam Martin of SportsNewser notes that ESPN saw its best overnight ratings of the season for Sunday Night Baseball thanks to another Yankees-Red Sox matchup.

Richard Lawler at Engadget says ESPN 3D is doubling its college football schedule from last year.

The Radio & TV Business Report has Westwood One Radio’s NFL announcing crews for this season.

Brian Straight of the Hartford Business Journal writes about the long-standing relationship between ESPN and Bristol, CT.

Joe Brescia from the New York Times speaks with new NFL Hall of Famer and NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk.

The New York Post’s Phil Mushnick is not a fan of YES’ Michael Kay.

Phil wants TNT to spill the beans on the Tiger Woods-Charles Barkley split. Like that will ever happen and who really cares?

The New York Daily News’ Gatecrasher tells us that Lifetime (a.k.a. The Network That Hates Men) has pulled the plug on a Serena Williams reality TV project.

Ken Schott from the Schenectady Gazette has the transcript and video of caddie Steve Williams’ interview with CBS’ David Feherty following Adam Scott’s win in the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

Jim Williams at the Washington Examiner looks at CBS/Showtime’s new reality show on the Army-Navy rivalry.

Tom Jones of the St. Petersburg Times feels ESPN’s Merril Hoge may have an agenda against Denver quarterback Tim Tebow.

Stephen F. Holder and Rick Stroud of the Times write that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may fall victim to more local blackouts this season.

Ed Sherman from Crain’s Chicago Business wishes the Bears would take care of their turf.

Dusty Saunders of the Denver Post talks with Colorado Rockies analyst George Frazier.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News has this week’s sports calendar.

Tom reviews the incendiary comments Fox Sports Radio’s Tony Bruno made on his Twitter account Friday night as the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies had a full-scale brawl.

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle has Giants manager Bruce Bochy irate over Bruno’s tweet.

Bruce Dowbiggin in the Toronto Globe and Mail looks at the Canadian sports media battle between giants Rogers and Bell.

Raju Mudhar from the Toronto Star previews Rogers’ entry into the sports magazine market.

Ben Koo of Awful Announcing says the NFL pregame shows are inundated with Hall of Famers.

Sports Media Watch has some ratings news and notes.

And SMW has more ratings news here.

Joe Favorito has a primer on keeping notes and how they could save you in the long run.

And that is all for today.

Additionally, he served as play-by-play announcer for ABC’s coverage of Pac-10 college football. An NFL Hall of Famer, Fouts retired after 15 seasons with the San Diego Chargers, where he was a six-time Pro Bowl selection. Upon his retirement, he held 42 team records and eight NFL records, including most 300-yard passing games, and his 43,040 total passing yards made him the second-most-prolific passer in NFL history. Fouts earned NFL and AFC Player of the Year honors in 1982, and was named AFC Most Valuable Player in 1979 and league co-MVP in 1982.

Dave Sims returns for his sixth season as Westwood One’s play-by-play announcer for Sunday Night Football. Before switching to primetime, Sims called Westwood One Sunday afternoon games as well as the NFL Playoffs for nearly a decade. The two-time Emmy Award winner has also called play-by-play for NCAA Basketball regular season games and tournament coverage for the past eight years and in 2003, also hosted the NCAA Women’s Final Four. In addition to his Westwood One duties, Sims called the Big East Football TV Game of the Week for many years, has written for the New York Daily News and is currently the TV play by play voice of the Seattle Mariners.

James Lofton returns for his third season as an analyst for Sunday Night Football on Westwood One. Lofton served as analyst and sideline reporter for the NFL on Westwood One from 1999 – 2001 and rejoined the Network after a seven-year coaching stint with the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders. He was the No. 1 draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 1978, beginning a long career as an NFL wide receiver. In 16 season playing for Green Bay, the Los Angeles Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and the Philadelphia Eagles, Lofton caught 764 passes for 14,004 yards, which was the most in NFL history at the time of his retirement. In 13 playoff games, Lofton caught 41 passes for 759 yards and eight touchdowns, including a seven-reception game in Super Bowl XXVI. He was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

Ian Eagle enters his fourth year as play-by-play announcer for Westwood One’s NFL Thursday night coverage. For the past four years, Eagle also called the action for Westwood One’s coverage of the SEC Basketball Championship and the Regional Semi-Finals and Finals of the NCAA Tournament. Eagle is primarily known for his work with CBS Sports, calling NFL games and NCAA Basketball games since 1998. He also has served as the play-by-play announcer for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets television broadcasts since 1995, after having called play-by-play for radio broadcasts the previous year. He was the play-by-play radio voice for the New York Jets in 1997 and hosted Jets pre- and post-game shows on WFAN from 1993 to 1996. Eagle joined WFAN Radio in New York in 1990 as a producer and debuted as host of his own show in 1992. Eagle was awarded the Bob Costas Award for Outstanding Sportscasting while attending Syracuse University.

Trent Green returns to Westwood One for his second season as the Thursday Night game analyst after serving in a similar capacity for one year on Sunday’s with FOX Television. In addition, Green also serves as a studio analyst for the NFL Network and as an analyst for preseason games on television for the Kansas City Chiefs. Green spent 15 seasons in the NFL, playing quarterback for five different franchises. He was a member of the Super Bowl XXXIV Champion Rams, but enjoyed his best seasons with Kansas City from 2001-2006. While wearing a Chiefs uniform, he became only the 4th quarterback in NFL history to have three consecutive seasons of 4,000 yards or more passing. He finished his career with 162 touchdowns and over 28,000 yards passing.

Howard David will once again serve as play-by-play announcer for Sunday Afternoon games. David returned to the network in 2009 after an eight-year hiatus. by , under Dial-Global, Westwood One Radio

This is part of a busy Monday in the world of sports media. Westwood One Radio which was once one of the most powerful syndicators in the medium has merged with Dial Global. At one time, Westwood One Radio was part of CBS and was able to amass rights to most of the country’s biggest sporting events through its agreements with MLB, NCAA, NFL, NHL, Notre Dame football, the College Football Association, The Masters®, and Olympics. While it no longer has MLB, NHL, Notre Dame and major college football games, Westwood One still is able to air NFL, the NCAA Tournament, The Masters® and the Olympics.

Today, we have word that Westwood One has merged with Dial-Global of the Triton Media Group. Dial-Global is a radio sales marketing and syndication company. Its programming includes Weather Channel Radio, Michael Smerconish, Ed Schultz and plenty of other formats.

WEEI Radio Network Remains Home of NFL on Westwood One

by , under NFL, WEEI, Westwood One Radio

This comes from WEEI in Boston. Its radio stations from Boston to Central and Western Massachusetts and Rhode Island will be the home of Sunday and Monday Night Football broadcasts via Westwood One Radio. Through this contract, WEEI will also be able to carry all of the NFL postseason games all the way to the Super Bowl. For the first time, the home markets for the Conference Championships and Super Bowl will not be blacked out from the national radio broadcasts. Previously, the home markets were blacked out, however, Westwood One was able to get that lifted in this new contract that begins with the 2011-12 season.

So if the Patriots reached the Super Bowl, Boston would be able to hear Kevin Harlan and Boomer Esiason call Super Bowl XLVI on WEEI as well as on flagship station 98.5 The Sports Hub.

Here’s the press release from WEEI and Entercom.

WEEI Sports Radio Network Announces Sunday and Monday Night Football Extension

WEEI will remain the exclusive home of NFL Network programming

July 19, 2011 (Boston) WEEI announced today that it will maintain its agreement with Westwood One to carry Sunday and Monday night football which includes the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

WEEI 850 AM, WEEI 103.7 FM, WVEI 1440 AM and WVEI FM 105.5 FM will again air the full slate of games offered by the network. The regular season is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 8th when the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints.

The 2011 season is also the first year the NFL broadcast blackout restriction has been lifted in home markets for the conference championship games and the Super Bowl. Because of this change, WEEI will be allowed to air the national radio feed of those two games if the Patriots were to advance that far in the postseason. The broadcast would air on WEEI 850 AM in Boston, WEEI 103.7 FM in Providence, WVEI 1440 AM in Worcester and WVEI 105.5 FM in Springfield.

Jason Wolfe, VP of Programming for WEEI said, “The success of the Patriots in the last decade has made the NFL incredibly popular in New England and especially in Boston, and I’m excited to again, be able to offer the national games to our listeners. And since the league has modified the postseason broadcast rules starting this season, it’ll be a real thrill for Patriot fans to be able to hear Boomer Esiason on the call of the Super Bowl, should the team get there. He’s the best analyst in the business.”

That’s it.

Some Late Wednesday Night/Thursday Morning Links

by , under BCS, Charles Barkley, Comcast, CTV, DirecTV, ESPN, Fox Sports, Michelle Beadle, MLB, NBC Sports, NFL, NHL, SNY, Super Bowl, Tour de France, TV Ratings, Vin Scully, Westwood One Radio

My plans to provide a full set of linkage got shot to hell when the car I was riding in got stuck in a snow bank during the ice storm in RI on Wednesday. So I spent three hours trying to get the vehicle out. Eventually, I got AAA to pull it out, but also spent a lot of time chipping the ice from the driveway, so it was exactly how I wanted to spend my day. Anyway, I’ll give you a short set of links here.

Westwood One Unveils Announcers for NFL Conference Championship Games

by , under Dave Sims, NFL, Westwood One Radio

Last release I’ll provide tonight.

Westwood One Radio has provided the announcers for the NFC and AFC Championship Games for Sunday. Kevin Harlan calls the NFC while Dave Sims will be in Pittsburgh for the AFC. Because CBS has the NFL Today crew in New York once again, it prevents Boomer Esiason from calling a game live. CBS used to be at the AFC Championship Game site, but in recent years due to economic cutbacks, it has chosen to stay at the CBS Broadcast Center. It used to be fun seeing Boomer live on the NFL Today, then hearing him on the radio, but that hasn’t happened in the last few years.

Anyway, here’s Westwood One’s announcement.

WESTWOOD ONE PRESENTS THE EXCLUSIVE NATIONAL RADIO BROADCASTS OF NFL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

In addition, Westwood One’s NFL broadcasts are streamed online at NFL.com, simulcast on Sirius/XM satellite radio, as well as NFL Mobile on Verizon wireless devices.

Kevin Harlan Is The New Radio Voice of Monday Night Football

by , under Monday Night Football, Westwood One Radio

This just in. Westwood One Radio has named Kevin Harlan as the new voice of Monday Night Football for this upcoming season. It’s a natural choice as Kevin worked most of the Monday Night Football games last season. If you remember earlier this year, Marv Albert stepped down as the announcer. Harlan will partner with Boomer Esiason. Here’s the press release.

WESTWOOD ONE NAMES KEVIN HARLAN NEW MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER
-- Kevin Harlan partners with Boomer Esiason as Play-by-Play Voice of the Westwood One Monday Night Football Broadcast Team –
New York, NY – June 29, 2010– Westwood One announced today that veteran NFL broadcaster Kevin Harlan will join Boomer Esiason as the lead play-by-play voice for Monday Night Football and Super Bowl XLV. Harlan becomes only the fifth regular Monday Night Football play-by-play announcer since the CBS Radio/Westwood One national radio broadcast began in 1978. Harlan follows in the footsteps of Marv Albert (2002-2009), Howard David (1996-2001), Jack Buck (1978-1984, 1987-1995) and Don Criqui (1985-1986).
“Anyone who has ever heard Kevin call a game knows exactly why we are thrilled to add an announcer of his caliber to our NFL talent roster – full-time,” said Gary Schonfeld, President of Westwood One Network. “Fans, stations and advertisers are going to be very happy this fall.”
“I am honored to have been selected as part of Westwood One’s Monday Night Football broadcast team with Boomer Esiason,” said Harlan. “I am truly humbled by the great voices that have held this position, including one of the legends of broadcasting, Marv Albert.”
“Kevin’s detailed descriptions and infectious energy will have NFL fans nationwide huddled around their radios,” added Howard Deneroff, Executive Producer of Westwood One Sports. “I am looking forward to a super season as Kevin and Boomer continue the long legacy of great broadcast teams that have brought the game to life for millions of listeners on Monday nights.”

Kevin Harlan was the play-by-play voice of select Monday Night Football games throughout the 2009 NFL season, as well as for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four on Westwood One from 2003-2007. Harlan currently calls NFL games for CBS Sports, where he has worked continuously since 1998, after having served in the same capacity for Fox Sports since 1994. He also spent nine seasons (1985-93) as the radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, and this marks his 26th consecutive season broadcasting the NFL. Harlan also is well-known nationally for his basketball broadcasts, describing both CBS Sports’ coverage of the NCAA Men’s Tournament and the NBA on TNT for more than a decade. Prior to that, Harlan spent nine seasons as the voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Good move by Westwood One.

BREAKING NEWS: Marv Albert Leaves Monday Night Football

by , under Marv Albert, Monday Night Football, Westwood One Radio

After doing Monday Night Football on Westwood One Radio for 8 seasons, Marv Albert has announced that he will no longer do play-by-play on the package. Albert took over for Howard David in the 2002-03 season and continued through the 2009 season, calling postseason games and the Super Bowl in each of those years.

Marv says he wants to commit fully to calling NBA games. He’s been cutting back on his schedule, reducing his load of New Jersey Nets games for YES Network and now this. Marv, who’s been one of the best announcers of his generation, will be missed.

Boomer Esiason who has been doing Monday Night Football on TV and radio since the 1998 season will remain as the analyst for Westwood One.

MARV ALBERT STEPS ASIDE AS PLAY-BY-PLAY VOICE OF MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL ON WESTWOOD ONE
New York, NY – June 4, 2010 – Westwood One announced today that legendary sportscaster Marv Albert will be leaving Westwood One’s NFL broadcast team. Boomer Esiason will continue to serve as lead analyst for Westwood One’s Monday Night Football and Super Bowl broadcasts alongside a play-by-play announcer that has yet to be determined.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my eight seasons with Boomer Esiason and the rest of the Westwood One crew, but I just felt that with my commitments to NBA telecasts and other projects, I wanted to cut down my schedule moving forward,” said Albert on his departure.
“We thank Marv for eight great seasons as the voice of Monday Night Football and the Super Bowl,” commented Executive Producer of Westwood One Sports, Howard Deneroff. “There’s only one Marv Albert, and his unmistakable voice and signature style made listening to him as much of a joy as it was working with him. We wish him well in future endeavors.”

Thinking about who could succeed Marv at the Monday Night Football announcer and quickly coming to mind are Sunday Night Football voice Dave Sims and Thursday Night Football voice Ian Eagle. Kevin Harlan is another possibility. It’s been fun listening to Marv call games on the radio for the last 8 seasons.

Westwood One Radio’s Statement on Ernie Harwell

by , under Ernie Harwell, MLB, Westwood One Radio

Throughout his career, Ernie Harwell worked postseason games for Westwood One Radio when it had the national contract with Major League Baseball. When Ernie was unceremoniously let go by the Detroit Tigers in 1991, he joined Westwood One to call the Game of the Week for the 1992 and continued to work for the network until 1997 when ESPN Radio took over the contract. And Ernie also worked for ESPN Radio for the postseason as well.

Here’s a statement from Westwood One.

Westwood One Mourns the Passing of Ernie Harwell

Ernie Harwell’s legendary voice reached beyond the borders of Detroit to a national audience as he called play-by-play for Westwood One’s coverage of Major League Baseball from 1992-1997. Executive Producer of Westwood One Sports Howard Deneroff worked closely with Harwell during that time.
“Westwood One is deeply saddened by the news of Ernie Harwell’s death and we mourn his passing with his immediate family, and also his extended family, Tiger nation,” said Deneroff “Harwell’s southern charm and unique style graced our (CBS Radio) national airwaves for 6 seasons in the early 90′s and we feel honored to have been able to work with him, and allow the rest of the country to hear and understand why fans in Michigan were enraptured for decades. Ernie liked to say ‘he was a part of all of those that met him’, but we are the lucky ones for having met him, and for having listened to him for so long. The warmth of his voice was only matched by the warmth of his heart and personality. He was a legend both on and off air, and he will be missed greatly.”
