Videos of the Week – Schoolhouse Rock

by , under Schoolhouse Rock, Video of the Week

Back in the 1970′s, cartoons were the norm on Saturday mornings on the networks. Now, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, PBS Kids and Nick Toons have pretty much taken over the kids TV market, but back in the day, you had some great cartoons. Now at :25 and :55 minutes past the hour, both ABC and CBS decided to fill that time with their own programming. CBS had “In The News“, produced by CBS News and gave kids a chance to find out what was going on.

ABC had Schoolhouse Rock, cartoon vignettes that taught viewers about grammar, history, math and science. For me, they were fun to watch and the songs like Three is a Magic Number, Figure 8, Interjections, Conjunction Junction, Interplanet Janet, Electricity among others. I loved them all.

And it did help memorizing certain multiplication tables, knowing that a noun is a person, place or thing or knowing how the Preamble to the Constitution goes. It was great stuff.

So without further delay, let’s give you some of my favorites.

My Hero, Zero - why the number zero is important.

Three is a Magic Number - also recorded by Blind Melon

Ready or Not, Here I Come – About the Five’s

A Noun is a Person, Place or Thing - sung by Lynn Ahrens

Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here

Interjections!

Conjunction Junction - One of the most popular songs to come out of Schoolhouse Rock, sung by Jack Sheldon

The Preamble – I posted this the other day, but since I’m in a megaposting mode, why not?

Interplanet Janet - About the solar system

Electricity

I’m Just a Bill - my favorite and sung by Jack Sheldon

You have quite a bit. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

A Preview of Videos of the Week

by , under Schoolhouse Rock, Video of the Week

When I was writing the Suzyn Waldman post, I gave you a video from “Free to Be … You and Me”, a children’s television special that ran on ABC in 1974. It then led me to finding some Schoolhouse Rock videos which I loved growing up as a kid. This weekend, I’ll give you a whole bunch of Schoolhouse Rock videos, but to whet your appetite, here’s one of my favorites, “The Preamble” written and sung by Lynn Ahrens. To this day, I can recite the Preamble to the Constitution thanks to this video and song.

On Sunday, I’ll do a whole background and post on Schoolhouse Rock, but this is just a sneak preview.
