Fox Sports Florida/Sun Sports Tells Dish Subscribers What They’re Missing

by , under Dish Network, FSN, Sun Sports

Just received this press release from Fox Sports Florida/Sun Sports and I’m posting it because Amy Pempel, the PR person for the regional sports network, has been very good to Fang’s Bites. I’m not taking sides here. I do have DirecTV, but that satellite provider has had its issues with various companies as well. If Dish Network wants to send a release telling its side of this story, it’s more than welcome to.

Just to give you an update, earlier this month, FX and Fox Sports Net affiliates were pulled from Dish in a dispute with the satellite provider. Fox-owned local stations have also been pulled and it appears some affiliates are in danger of being removed from the satellite provider as well

Here’s what Dish subscribers are missing from Fox Sports Florida and Sun Sports this week.

NO DISH FOR HEAT, MAGIC, LIGHTNING, PANTHERS & MORE
DISH STILL NOT OFFERING FOX SPORTS FLORIDA & SUN SPORTS
NEGOTIATIONS HAVE STALLED; AGREEMENT NOT EXPECTED
Oct. 13 update: Dish Network customers will miss a number of games this weekend and on Monday featuring Florida sports teams. These games will be televised locally on Sun Sports or FOX Sports Florida, but will not be available to Dish customers because Dish dropped Fox’s 19 regional sports networks on Oct. 1.
Tonight            Panthers @ Flames (in S FL) – FS Florida
Friday              Tennessee @ Florida Women’s Soccer – Sun Sports
Saturday          Lightning @ Panthers (in S FL) – FS Florida
Sunday            Georgia @ Florida Women’s Volleyball – Sun Sports
Monday            Bobcats @ Heat (in S FL) – Sun Sports
Magic @ Hawks (in N/Cent FL) – FS Florida
Stars @ Lightning (in N/Cent FL) – Sun Sports
Live SEC, Big 12 & Pac-10 football games scheduled on Sun Sports & FOX Sports Florida tonight and Saturday will also not be available to DISH customers, nor will the popular Sunday replays of the Gator and Seminole football games on Sun Sports.

“The two sides are not actively negotiating and remain at an impasse,” said an FSN spokesperson.

ON NOVEMBER 1, DISH CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO LOSE WTVT (FOX13) IN TAMPA, WOFL (FOX35) IN ORLANDO, AND WOGX (FOX51) IN GAINESVILLE IF A NEW AGREEMENT IS NOT REACHED.
Fortunately, these games, FOX Sports Florida/Sun Sports are offered by a number of other local distributors. For more information, viewers should call 1-877-99-I-PAID or visit www.getwhatipaidfor.com.

Tough sledding for subscribers in Florida looking for hockey, basketball and college sports. As mentioned, Dish Network is invited to give its side to this dispute.

Some Late Wednesday/Early Thursday Morning Links

by , under ABC, Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, College Football, Deadspin, ESPN, HBO, John Sterling, MLB, NASCAR, NBA, NFL, NHL, SEC, Sun Sports, TV Ratings, Versus

I was going to do these earlier, but got bogged down after finding some great music on YouTube. Maybe I’ll do a Videos of the Week down the road for the stuff I was playing on Twitter and personally. Anyway, let’s do a few links before I shut it down for the night.

Hannah Karp at the Wall Street Journal has a great article on how the NFL is gaining traction with the next generation of fans.

Marcus Vanderberg (For some reason, I think of Schenkenberg when I type Marcus’ name) of SportsNewser says the Detroit Lions may not be winners on the field, but certainly are when it comes to social media.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell wonders if the new adidas NBA jerseys are going to be a hit with the public.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union has the NFL Week 3 TV schedule for the New York Capital Region.

Pete also has the college football TV schedule for Week 4.

Over to Ken Schott of the Schenectady Gazette who says he just can’t stand Yankees radio voice John Sterling.

At the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Seth Rorabaugh writes that HBO is going to do a “Hard Knocks”-type series on the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals as they prepare for the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day. Thanks to Greg Wyshynski of Yahoo’s Puck Daddy for the link.

Tom Jones at the St. Petersburg Times says the Tampa Bay Rays may not be doing well in the Bronx this week, but their ratings on Sun Sports are through the roof.

Helene Elliot of the Los Angeles Times says the Kings will stream their first NHL preseason game on two sites.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News notes that Staples Center is unveiling a new HD scoreboard on Thursday.

Sports Media Watch says CBS received staggering ratings for its late afternoon NFL coverage in Week 2.

SMW says an early afternoon SEC matchup on ESPN last Saturday received high numbers.

SMW notes that ABC’s regional telecast of Texas-Texas Tech Saturday night got good numbers too.

John Daly at the Daly Planet looks at Versus carrying a NASCAR-themed show for a second season.

At Press Coverage, Dan Levy looks at ESPN’s planned LeBronathon Training Camp coverage.

I’ve written a post for Press Coverage on the yelling by NFL TV analysts.

Tim Cary got to go behind the scenes at the Big Ten Network for a big day of four football games being played at once.

Susan Shan writes an appreciation of the late Mike Celizic of MSNBC.com.

If you were a regular reader of the old Fire Joe Morgan blog, you’re aware that Ken Tremendous, dak, Junior and the guys targeted Celizic calling him “HatGuy”. The FJM guys reunited at Deadspin on Wednesday and brought back their scathing posts on sports journalism. But as they concluded, Ken Tremendous gave this heartfelt tribute to Celizic who died Wednesday at the age of 61 after a battle with lymphoma. Way to make me feel guilty over the joy I had over the HatGuy posts, KT.

Ok, time to sleep. You have enough links to tie you over until I give you some new ones in the morning. Well, it is the morning in Rhode Island. Later this morning. You know what I mean. I need sleep.

by , under Big East, Brett Favre, Deadspin, Dick Enberg, Erin Andrews, ESPN, ESPN2, FSN, MLB, MLS, NBA TV, NHL, PGA Tour, Red Sox Broadcasters, SNY, Sun Sports, TV Ratings

Let’s do some links here. I had a late night monitoring the Texas Rangers auction and reading the live blog that CBS 11 in Dallas conducted throughout the entire process. The great Maury Brown of the Biz of Baseball also provided coverage on his site and on Twitter. In addition, Daniel Kaplan of the Sports Business Journal tweeted the latest developments throughout the day and night. But the CBS11 crew did a great job providing the live blog and it’s still going strong today. Tremendous coverage of what was truly a one-of-a-kind story.

Now to the links.

The Day Is Shot For Me Links

by , under 3-D, Big 12, Big Ten Network, Erin Andrews, Fox Sports, FSN, HBO Sports, IMG, ISP Sports, MLB, NFL, NFL Network, Pac 10, Sun Sports, TV Ratings

Having had to take Dad to the eye doctor then being told that I can’t go to the Massachusetts office because he’s taking a client to lunch is really killing me. Not having a car is killing me. Not having my own schedule is killing me. And after today, the blogging schedule will be light over the next few days due to end of the month/beginning of the month stuff will kill me as well. Not a happy day. And if I get that spam from someone telling me to move to New Mexico, that person will be getting my wrath.

So having said that, it’s time to do some linkage while I can.

In a big move, Michael Smith of Sports Business Daily reports that IMG College is purchasing ISP Sports which means a shift in the multimedia rights of 60 colleges and universities.

USA Today’s Michael Hiestand says Big Ten Network is going to use archival footage, some never aired before, to produce a new 13 week series.

Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk writes that Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer and Daryl Johnston will be joining NFL Network as analysts, but will also remain at Fox in their current capacities.

Media analyst Larry Gerbrandt writes in the Hollywood Reporter that professionals and manufacturers want to push 3-D TV as fast as they can.

Lacey Rose of Forbes speaks with Sony Pictures Television head Andy Kaplan who’s bullish on 3-D.

Dennis Waszak, Jr. of the Associated Press says the NFL’s New York Jets are ready to be in the spotlight this summer thanks to HBO’s Hard Knocks.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell explores Tim Tebow’s new endorsement deal with Jockey undergarments.

Lisa Backus of the New Britain (CT) Herald reports an unsealed arrest warrant provides new details on the charges against former ESPN analyst Jeremy Green, son of former NFL coach Dennis Green. Jeremy was arrested earlier this month in a motel near the ESPN headquarters on child pornography charges.

Pete Dougherty in the Albany Times Union tries to piece together the NFL regular season TV schedule for the Capital Region.

Jenny Vrentas of the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger explores how HBO lured the Jets to take part in Hard Knocks.

In the New Jersey Newsroom, Evan Weiner writes that an East Coast media trip by Pac 10/12 football coaches is in reality, a ploy to increase TV rights fees for the conference.

In the Washington Examiner, Jim Williams looks at the stronger TV ratings for the Nationals.

The Washington Post’s Reliable Source blog looks at Erin Andrews going to Capitol Hill Tuesday to lobby for strong anti-stalking legislation.

Carol Vaughn of the Eastern Shore (VA) News writes that ESPN will be on Tangier Island to shoot an ad for ESPN3.com.

Dave Nicholson of the Tampa (FL) Tribune writes about a local girl who was featured on ESPN’s E:60 for her feat of throwing two perfect games in Little League.

In the St. Petersburg Times, Tom Jones says Sun Sports’ Dwayne Staats did not mention Matt Garza’s no-hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays until the final out.

Jeff Mosier of the Dallas Morning News cites an ESPN Outside the Lines report that mentioned the number of food safety violations at Cowboys Stadium.

An aside here. I saw that report on ESPN before heading out Sunday morning and it was an eyeopener. Very solid journalism from ESPN and Paula Lavigne. The story is still having an impact three days after it aired.

Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle says Big 12 Commissioner Don Beebe can only look forward after a tumultuous summer that almost led to the disbanding of the conference.

Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the Brewers’ TV ratings are down this year compared to the same period a year ago.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times writes that a miscommunication between FSN Northwest and higher ups prevented the network from airing a confrontation in the Mariners dugout Saturday during a game against the Red Sox that NESN and Japanese network NHK had no problem in showing to viewers.

Bruce Dowbiggin at the Toronto Globe and Mail says the noose may be tightening on cyclist Lance Armstrong over steroids.

More coming up. I’ll post these now.

Let’s give you some links on this Thursday.

ESPN Ombudsman Don Ohlmeyer discusses the suspension of Tony Kornheiser and the coverage of the Tiger Woods story.

R. Thomas Umstead of Multichannel News says Turner Sports has launched a new iPhone app.

Katy Bachman of Mediaweek says the Chicago Bears had the biggest radio audience of all NFL teams.

CNBC’s Darren Rovell gets reaction from “One Shining Moment” composer David Barrett about CBS using Jennifer Hudson to sing a new rendition of his song for the NCAA Tournament.

Eric Wilbur of the Boston Globe isn’t too thrilled about the business practices at the new restaurant owned by NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times looks at the demolition of the old Yankee Stadium.

Richard Goldstein of the Times has an obituary of former LA Rams defensive lineman Merlin Olsen who became an actor and an NFL analyst for NBC and later CBS. Olsen died at the age of 69 of Mesothelioma. In 1979, Olsen was teamed with Dick Enberg forming one of the best NFL announcing teams in TV history lasting until 1989. Olsen also acted appearing in “Little House on the Prairie” and “Father Murphy”. Olsen was known as a gentle giant, but also formed one of the best defensive front lines in NFL history as part of the “Fearsome Foursome” with the Rams in the 1960′s.

Also from the Times, Stuart Elliot says computer chip manufacturer Intel is buying ads all over the place including during the NCAA Tournament on CBS.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union talks with CBS’ Dick Enberg who has 50 years of NCAA Tournament memories.

Sarah Talalay of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel writes about a cooking segment that the Miami Heat is producing along with cable TV partner Sun Sports.

The Orlando Business Journal talks about ESPN signing an 8 year rights deal with the Citrus Bowl.

John Kiesewetter of the Cincinnati Enquirer has Fox Sports Ohio’s alternate channels for today’s college basketball action.

Writing for the Muncie (IN) Star-Press, Dom Christi of Ball State University says CBS has reason to believe that it will have decent ratings for the NCAA Tournament.

Jim O’Donnell in the Chicago Sun-Times talks with ESPN college basketball analyst Steve Lavin about the rumors of him going to DePaul.

Bob Wolfley in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel gives praise to ESPN’s Doug Gottlieb (scroll down).

Bob Mayhall of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat says Fox Sports Midwest’s Dan McLaughlin may not be calling the Blues this season, but he’s busier than ever.

Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star writes that Big 12 fans are not enthralled with ESPN’s Brent Musburger and Bob Knight.

Keith Thursby of the Los Angeles Times has an extensive obit of Merlin Olsen.

Tom Hoffarth of the Los Angeles Daily News also remembers Olsen.

Here’s a very nice tribute to Olsen by NFL Films President Steve Sabol.

Pat Hickey in the Montreal Gazette feels the boost hockey received during the 2010 Olympics will be very shortlived.

Friend of Fang’s Bites Cameron Frye at the Beantown Athletic Supporters properly gets on Jerry Remy for one particular charge at his new restaurant.

I’ll finish it there.

Sun Sports & Fox Sports Florida To Air Documentary on Former Florida State Coach Bobby Bowden

by , under College Football, FSN, Sun Sports

Starting tomorrow, Sun Sports and Fox Sports Florida will air a new documentary on former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden who retired after the 2009-2010 college football season. I do have an advanced copy so expect a review of this either late tonight or sometime tomorrow before the first airing. Here are the details of the contents.

FSU TELEVISION ADVISORY
“Bobby: Reflections of a Legend” Premieres Tuesday 8:00pm ET exclusively on Sun Sports
ORLANDO – Tuesday, January 26, at 8:00pm ET, Sun Sports, the regional television home for the Seminoles for 20+ years, will premiere a riveting, one-of-a-kind TV special on Bobby Bowden, entitled “Bobby: Reflections of a Legend.”
This is not your ordinary TV profile highlighting his career. It will be a more personal look at what makes Bobby Bowden who he is, and much, much more.
A must-see television program for FSU fans produced by the network that has covered the ‘Noles and Coach Bowden for more than two decades, the one-hour program will also air on other FOX regional sports networks across the U.S., including Sun Sports’ sister network FOX Sports Florida.
Here’s what viewers can expect to see….The show looks at what makes Bobby Bowden tick…a look at both his personal and professional make-up. There are recollections from people who know him well from all eras, plus a conversation with Bobby himself. In the most basic terms, this is, aside from wins and losses, and aside from maybe even football, a study of why Bobby Bowden is who he is. Also, it’s candid reactions from people to his departure, and a very recent conversation with Bobby about his own feelings and what’s next for him.
Throughout all of this, Sun Sports weaves in and out of segments & topics using footage from Coach Bowden’s last game, the 2010 Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. The network also includes quite a bit of historical footage from over 30 years of his celebrated career.
Additional content that did not make it into the final show will also be available on the network’s website, FoxSportsFlorida.com.
Again, this is NOT another “recap” type of show recounting records, numbers, and the A-Z story of Bobby’s life and times. Sun Sports’ producers felt it was very important to try and produce something different & unique.
Segments are broken down as follows:

1.    Opening…reactions to Bobby’s retirement announcement, thoughts on health and what motivated Bobby to continue to the age of 80.  Narrated by Keith Jones.
2.    “The Bowden Way” (Bobby’s approach to the game, approach to coaching, dealing with players). How Bobby defined it, how his players defined it. Why Bobby’s way of doing things was successful. Narrated by William Floyd.
3.    Relationships with players and relationships with people. Bobby’s folksy charm, but also strong leadership. Narrated by Keith Jones.
4.    Recruiting tales. Former players recount how Bobby won them over. (i.e. Kirk Carruthers recalling how Bowden visited his home and while leaving threw a snowball back at the family with a smile. Ken Alexander’s mother sharing recipes in the kitchen with Bobby, etc.). Narrated by William Floyd.
5.    Bowden’s relationship with the media. How he set about to work well with the press, and why he was so successful at it. Narrated by Paul Kennedy.
6.    The final stretch..Bobby’s candid thoughts. Narrated by Paul Kennedy.
7.    Closing…what’s next. The future. How others remember Bobby, and how Bobby would like to be remembered. Narrated by Keith Jones.
With a bit of a documentary approach, the show is unhosted as the network uses three people to narrate instead. The narrators do include some personal recollections as well as lead us through our topics. The show is narrated by:

And SMW says Jets-Chargers drew over 35 million viewers.

SMW tells us TNT drew low ratings for Orlando-LA Lakers on Monday.

Christopher Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media is troubled by the firing of a Sun Sports sideline reporter in the wake of him being charged in child pornography distribution.

Saturday Morning’s Links Or A Whole New World For Soccer Fans

by , under CBS Sports, Dan Patrick, ESPN, ESPN2, Fox Sports, FSN, MLB, NBA, NFL, SEC, Soccer, Sports Talk Radio, Sun Sports, TV Ratings, Vin Scully

I’m up this morning watching English Premier League soccer on ESPN2. Late last night, ESPN came to an agreement with Fox Soccer Channel to air two games a week, early Saturday morning games and Monday afternoon games so fans who had had to depend on Setanta Sports and shelling out money to watch the games don’t have to anymore. Setanta still has the Saturday 10 a.m. and early Sunday morning games, but not as many as in the past. It’s a nice feeling to wake up to EPL games on ESPN2 for the next 10 months.

I’ve been critical of ESPN for many things, but getting the EPL this season in both the UK and the US is a great move. I can hardly contain my excitement.

Of course earlier this year, ESPN won the rights to air EPL games in the UK and its website is up and running.

Let’s do some linkage for you.

The Nielsen Ratings Wire blog looks at the excitement over the new Madden 10 NFL video game.

Mary Ellen Fillo of the Hartford Courant looks at a new ESPN promo starring Snoop Dog… and Mike Ditka????

Jack Bell of the New York Times looks at ESPN’s entry into the English Premier League starting today.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union is urging a local radio station to stop airing the Dan Patrick Show on a 6 hour delay.

John Boccacino of the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle looks at ESPN’s Chris Mortensen making a stop at Buffalo Bills training camp on Friday.

Jonathan Tannenwald writes in his Philly.com Pretzel Logic blog that he’s excited to watch English Premier League games on ESPN2.

Jim Williams from the Washington Examiner says scoring the EPL rights is a huge feather in the cap for ESPN.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer says Fox Sports Ohio will have a full slate of high school football games this fall.

Janelle Gefland of the Cincinnati Enquirer talks with ESPN’s Cliff Drysdale who’s in town to call a women’s tennis tournament this weekend.

In the Shreveport (LA) Times, CBS’ Tim Brando previews a college football show he hosted for the network.

Christopher Curry of the Gainesville (FL) Sun says Cox Communications and Sun Sports have finally come to an agreement to air Tampa Bay Rays games this season.

Angela Busch of the Naples (FL) News writes that a local minor league hockey team is changing flagship radio stations.

Mel Bracht of the Daily Oklahoman does not like CBS’ Gary Danielson’s predictions for the BCS Championship Game.

Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News talks with local sports radio legend Norm Hitzges.

Patrick Finley of the Arizona Daily Star writes that the new Arizona Wildcats Sports Network is hiring new talent for football and basketball games.

Mitch Chortkoff writing in the Santa Monica Mirror says contrary to a Los Angeles Times report last month that Dodgers voice Vin Scully would retire after next season, now has Scully backtracking on those comments.

Cary Osborne of the Santa Clarita Valley Signal says there’s an increase of high school sports on TV.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times is disturbed, but also encouraged by some of the trends he’s witnessing in baseball reporting.

Mike Reynolds of Multichannel News writes that the NFL has begun the promotional push for its NFL RedZone which will be available on cable this year. RedZone is different from the Red Zone Channel which is an exclusive to DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers.

Mike looks at ESPN’s US deal to air EPL games.

Sam Dunn of the Guardian in the UK writes about ESPN getting ready to join the battle for EPL viewers today.

Andy Fixmer and Margaret Brennan of Bloomberg combine for a story in which ESPN is predicting a high UK viewership for EPL games.

James Corrigan of the Independent in the UK feels ESPN’s signing of legendary football announcer Ray Stubbs is a big deal for the upstart network.

The great EPL Talk blog says this is not the first time that ESPN2 has aired English Premier League games.

The Sports Media Watch says last week’s Red Sox-Yankees game tied the highest ratings of the season for Fox Sports with …. a Yankees-Red Sox game!

Joe Favorito discusses the best way to deliver a message.

And Joe looks at the way the New Jersey Nets are trying to spread their message during the NBA offseason.

Christopher Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media looks at the SEC’s final revised media policy.

The Big Lead looks at the traffic for the major sports websites during what turned out to be a very busy July.

Chuck Hanf from the Two Cents from Beantown blog has a new show and it debuted last night. Check it out.

That’s going to do it. Turned out to be busier than I thought, but that’s a good thing. This should do it for today unless something major breaks.

Let’s do some linkage this evening. Lazy night for sports, but never a lazy night for blogging. Let’s do the links then I have some housekeeping to do later. Blog housekeeping, not house housekeeping. That’s for later.

I’ll start with Friend of Fang’s Bites and fellow puckhead Ken Schott of the Schenectady Gazette who is thrilled over his Flyers coming to Fenway Park to take on my Bruins at Fenway Park for the 2010 Winter Classic.

David looks at NBC’s deal with the NHL and IMG selling the international rights for the NFL.

Steve Lepore’s Puck The Media has the potential NHL on NBC schedule for next season. Steve speculates on the possible CBC Hockey Night in Canada sked. And Steve looks at what Versus could air next season.

Pete Dougherty of the Albany Times Union provides the times for coverage for all four days of the Open Championship.

Glen Dickson from Broadcasting & Cable says this will be the last year we’ll have to put up with watching the Open Championship in old school standard definition.

Tim Lemke of the Washington Times writes about DirecTV providing expanded coverage of the Open Championship.

Chris Byrne of the Eye on Sports Media has the BBC TV and radio broadcast schedule for the Open Championship. Chris says the PGA Tour’s Facebook page got embroiled in a mini-controversy over the Open Championship.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says Stan Savran will remain on FSN Pittsburgh while losing his nightly talk show.

Ray Frager of the Sports Media Journal gives major props to a Baltimore sports talk show host for coming clean about his painkiller addiction.

Here is the piece that Ray refers to in the Baltimore-centric Press Box site.

Also in Press Box, Dave Hughes of DCRTV.com says news/talk WBAL-AM still holds a big piece of the local sports pie.

Radio Online says veteran play-by-play man Bill Rosinski joins ESPN Radio for college football games.

Fashionistas Cameron Frye and Wrap Around Curl get catty over Erin Andrews’ dress that has caused a stir on the sports blogosphere.

Phil Lowe of the i365Fight blog says ESPN is close to picking up the rights to air UFC programming in the UK.

Ciaran Hancock of the Irish Times says Setanta Sports picked up a key package of English Premier League games in Ireland helping it stay afloat after it lost a series of games to ESPN earlier this month.

The EPL Talk blog says Fox Soccer Channel will pick up three “friendlies” involving Liverpool starting this month.

That’s going to do it for tonight. Back later with some press release stuff.
