BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — âThe Great Debaters,â a film based on the real-life victories of a black debating team in the 1930s, topped the list of nominees announced Tuesday for the 39th NAACP Image Awards.
âGirlfriendsâ and âEverybody Hates Chrisâ led TV nominees.
âThe Great Debatersâ collected eight nominations, including outstanding motion picture and both outstanding actor and outstanding director for Denzel Washington. The movie also garnered three supporting-actor nominations for Forest Whitaker, Nate Parker and Denzel Whitaker.
Other best-picture nominees: âAmerican Gangster,â âI Am Legend,â âTalk to Meâ and âTyler Perryâs Why Did I Get Married?â
Other outstanding-actor nominees were Columbus Short for âStomp the Yard,â Don Cheadle for âTalk to Me,â Terrence Howard for âPrideâ and Will Smith for âI Am Legend.â
Nominated for outstanding actress: Jurnee Smollett for âThe Great Debaters,â Angelina Jolie for âA Mighty Heart,â Halle Berry for âThings We Lost In the Fire,â Jill Scott for âTyler Perryâs Why Did I Get Married?â and Taraji P. Henson for âTalk To Me.â
In TV categories, âEverybody Hates Chrisâ and âGirlfriendsâ had seven nominations each, including best TV comedy.
In music categories, the nominees for outstanding album were Alicia Keysâ âAs I Am,â Chris Brownâs âExclusive,â Kanye Westâs âGraduation,â âGrowing Painsâ by Mary J. Blige and âSystemâ by Seal.
The Image Awards honor those who promote diversity in the arts. Awards in 44 categories, including literature, will be presented Feb. 14 in a Los Angeles ceremony broadcast live on Fox.
