'The Old Goat Ranch'
Oil on canvas, 32" x 36"
1929 Texas Wildflower Competitive Exhibition
Awarded Second Prize, Group 2: Ranch Life
Millard Sheets was a promising artist at the age of twenty-one when he executed the work The Old Goat Ranch. The prize moneys from the 1929 Davis competition allowed the artist to make a year-long trip to Europe to further his painting education. This work is painted with strong brushwork and powerful colors. The numerous activities in the canvas, as well as the imagery, require the viewer to examine the many elements to see how it is painted and what is depicted. This image of ranch life is quite different from any of the other works in the collection in that there is an intimacy in the overall image rather than illustration of the expanse of the Texas scene.-RC
