Retire the pencil?
[edit]In articles such as Thomas A. Watson, the edit pencil really stands out. Could this template adopt the same style for edit links as the Navbox? Rather than V•T•E, it could use I•E (for Item and Edit), which would also help to differentiate it. ~ Boro (talk) 15:11, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- The difference is that V•T•E interacts with Wikipedia as usual, whereas the pencil is different and weird as a temporary measure to edit Wikidata. The editorial communities of Wikipedia and Wikidata continue to resist coordinating, with documentation in countless debates at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy).
- The pencil is status quo so challenging to change because of high tension and strong feelings. I am in support of discussion about style changes but doing so would require social planning. One good way to plan is to have a group of about 5 people come to agreement, then co-present a discussion for broader change. I do not anticipate that there is a simpler way to get consensus.
- Alternatively, I support anyone being bold and making changes, but if anyone protests, then we need to slow down. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:18, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- "really stands out"? It's a very small icon at the bottom of the article (and not even visible on mobile). And it's the same symbol used for Wikidata info in infoboxes as well. Fram (talk) 15:18, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- It does stand out in the context of the bottom of the article for desktop users (who still account for 50% of views). I'll try to read up on the debates to better understand the tension here. After that, I'm here to contribute ideas and to be part of the discussion. ~ Boro (talk) 15:32, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose E for edit doesn't make sense, because the items property is edited in Wikidata. The question is only pencil or I for item. The pencil is the better choice. Grimes2 15:32, 6 August 2025 (UTC)
Empty string in suppress argument
[edit]When using |suppress=
with empty string, the template outputs the maintenance category. Is this the intended behavior?
{{#tag:nowiki| {{Authority control|show=|qid=|additional=|state=|suppress=}} }}
→
If empty strings are specified for the other arguments, the template will not output the maintenance category (unless an article connected to a Wikidata item uses the empty |qid=
). I believe empty values in |suppress=
can also be ignored. 本日晴天 (talk) 03:07, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
- Okay I agree. Working on this in the sandbox ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:08, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- Work completed on sandbox. In addition I have added a check to ensure that any identifier omitted using
|suppress=
is valid/recognised as a Wikidata property — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:56, 17 September 2025 (UTC)Done — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 06:47, 18 September 2025 (UTC)
Please note that the Integrated Authority File, or GND, provides data that are edited collectively by German, Austrian, and Swiss librarians. This is why it is not correct to indicate GND data as data from Germany, or from a national source only. Indeed, GND is an international authority file and should please be used as such. The German National Library only provides hosting under its domain. This is why I would like to ask if you please could modify the template and move GND to the international section. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 13:06, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- We could place Integrated Authority File under International or Germany/Austria/Switzerland (or German-speaking countries) under National. Grimes2 15:32, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'd prefer to place it under International as GND. Thanks. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 16:05, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- That is rather a long label. I favour the international option I suppose — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:06, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, GND under International. Grimes2 16:08, 15 September 2025 (UTC)
- That's wonderful. Thank you all very much for the fine discussion and for fixing this so quickly. Regards, Aschmidt (talk) 07:15, 16 September 2025 (UTC)
