List of typographical symbols and punctuation marks

[edit]

Might you be able to help at template talk:Unichar#An odd request: name only? I would like to resolve this issue properly. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 22:40, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@JMF Would you mind being more specific? I don't know what a proper solution to the issue would look like in your mind. You asked for a way to fetch character names, like Unichar does. I told you the way Unichar does it. Are you asking me to make the change in list of typographical symbols and punctuation marks? Warudo (talk) 22:49, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm working on it at my sandbox, but the idea is that column 2 the table should have the true canonical name of the mark. (I thought of merging columns 1 and 2 and have a single {{unichar2}} call per row but that makes sortation less effective, which is possibly a show-stopper?. It would be a lot easier than writing a new template of course!)
Either way, it is potentially a controversial change so I will certainly float the idea for comment at the article talk page before I do a load of work. (Which I will do, I'm not asking you to do it.)
I assume you will see that I have replied to you at template talk:Unichar. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:27, 1 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

New template: ucname

[edit]

If you can spare a moment, would you have a look at {{ucname}} please? I'm stuck at wikilinking the canonical name. Atm,

  • {{ucname|41}}

produces

  • Latin capital letter a

Not a good omen for my ability to make linking optional (using nlink=, as per unichar). (and why, in the illustration above, does the bullet not appear?) --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 11:12, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

All the problems were caused by newlines. Trying to prettify the code will break unless you escape the newlines with comments. This means the template's code should look either like this or like this (EDIT:The diffs are wrong. See below). Warudo (talk) 11:36, 4 August 2025 (UTC) --Edited: 12:01, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The template usage above currently generates a lint error (misnesting: span). -- 92.18.74.149 (talk) 11:40, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was the newlines again. I just removed all of them for now. @JMF: If you find the version with newlines more readable, I can add them back, properly escaped. Warudo (talk) 11:52, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Good job. I added the blank line on this talk page merely to isolate which "thing" was creating the lint error as previously the whole code chunk was highlighted by the linter. -- 92.18.74.149 (talk) 12:29, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Another discovery for me. My aim was not to prettify but it verify that my }s were not mismatched. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 12:40, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It might also have helped me identify the problem if I had chosen a character whose canonical name already has an article (for example Registered sign ). D'oh! --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 15:24, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I added support for |nlink=. Now the name is linked only if the nlink parameter is used. Warudo (talk) 21:27, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I noticed. Thank you, I'm obliged, I couldn't have done that unaided. I have updated the sample at the list talk page accordingly. 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 23:23, 4 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Commenting in various places

[edit]

Hello Warudo, I believe this is my first interaction with you, and good morning to you (or whatever time it is for you where you live!)

I just woke up to your nomination to remove me from the autopatrol redirect list, and I respectfully ask that you consider removing me from the removal list nomination (yes that sounded funny to write out). That one particular edit was a high one sure, on one single page (Banana), made across November 15 and November 16 of 2024! I am surprised to have completely out of the blue woken up to 38 notification flags today, but I just wanted to address this and nip it in the bud. For one, I commented already in all the places I see reference to this, and for two, I even !voted just now a "Delete all" comment in support of removing those particular redirects if we think they should go.

Hoping to resolve this right away, as I still make plenty of useful redirects, most especially related to book articles which I find as part of my search when working over the Category:Books with missing cover.

Thanks for reading the above and hopefully we can agree to just move forward from here. Iljhgtn (talk) 13:33, 13 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Iljhgtn There is an editor in Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Redirect autopatrol list#Requests that got declined after 1 of their redirects got deleted at RfD and one other is being questioned for 2 redirects. You made way more questionable redirects than that. So I don't think removing you from #Removals is the right thing to do. It's now up to the WP:NPP editors to decide if you get to keep the right. Friedrich Ulrich Maximilian Johann Graf von Luxburg

[edit]

Well done for finding Friedrich Ulrich Maximilian Johann Graf von Luxburg too! I laughed out loud at the copyright notice at the bottom. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 14:20, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SunloungerFrog Thanks. I found it by checking File:Friedrich von Luxburg Carolath.png and seeing it was linked in two articles. I think that image should be deleted at Commons, by the way. Warudo (talk) 14:26, 2 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
