Shutdown Corner - NFL

Former NFL linebacker Matt Millen is probably best-known for his tenure as the Detroit Lions' president and CEO from 2001 through 2008, when he was the man primarily responsible for the team's 31-97 record -- the worst won-loss total over such a time in the modern NFL. Millen's catastrophic incompetence as a personnel executive masked his previous career as a blowhard in the booth; he was actually a somewhat well-regarded color analyst in the 1990s, back when every network wanted their own version of John Madden and didn't stop to see whether the clones could match Madden's football acumen. "Big guys who yell a lot" generally sufficed as a general job description.

Freed from the constraints of terrible drafts and awful free-agency pickups, Millen was once again ready for the booth, and several networks were interested. He currently provides analysis for the "Monday Night Football" pregame show and calls college games for ABC. But it is his time with the NFL Network's "Thursday Night Football" package that's getting Millen the most notice these days, and this ramped up when the network matched Millen with Joe Theismann and Bob Papa for the 2010 season.

Papa is known as a pro's pro. Theismann's 100 mph shtick rubs a lot of people the wrong way, but he seems to be seen as a day at the beach compared to the Millen experience. In Thursday's Chicago Bears-Miami Dolphins game, Millen brought out all of his chestnuts -- blowing player names, misidentifying what was actually happening on the field, stepping on the lines of everyone else in the booth -- and throwing in a couple new ones for good measure. Millen wouldn't shut up about his alma mater Penn State for a time, and he called Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli "one of the best coaches I've been around." Marinelli was Detroit's head coach in 2008, when the Lions had the worst single season in NFL history -- the only team ever to finish a season with an 0-16 record.

Noted TV critic Norman Chad recently called the Millen-Theismann combo "a social experiment of potentially apocalyptic consequences," and it seems as if the viewers agree. Millen's disconnect from reality brought forth a Twitter hatefest the likes of which this writer has never seen -- not even during a Tim McCarver World Series broadcast! The comments were in the four figures, literally none of them were positive, and the NFL Network should pay attention; it seems that its brand could be seriously diluted if it doesn't do something about this.

After the jump, just a few of the better comments:

RT @bunraku: Dear NFL Network, How can you possibly expect us to trust Matt Millen's analysis of football talent? #WinlessLionsHisRecipeless than a minute ago via ÜberTwitter

@sportsguy33 As a Lions fan, I could live with seeing Matt Millen on my screen, as long as he had an 0-16 placard hanging from his neck.less than a minute ago via web

If I'm Bob Papa, I mention that the score is 0 to 16 as often as possible until Millen snaps.less than a minute ago via web

Ok new plan for nxt week, where can I find game audio on Sirius so I won't have to listen to Theisman and Millen?less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPad

@JamieSamuelsen @ProFootballTalk They used to be called "expert commentators" before they became "color guys." Millen is poster child. #NFLless than a minute ago via web

Forget this. I've got the Girl Talk album. I don't need Theismann and Millen in my life.less than a minute ago via TweetDeck

Yikes -- it just goes on and on. Search "Millen" on Twitter this morning, and the infinite bashing will blow you away. This isn't about going after Matt Millen per se; it would seem that pretty much everyone not running a sports programming department understands that this guy will never have credibility in the booth after what he did as a GM. Think of it more as an intervention. The NFL Network eventually realized its mistake with Bryant Gumbel, so there is a precedent here.

Hey, NFL Network -- we're just trying to help. Make your games watchable again!

    seriously though
matt millen should not be offering nfl opinions to anyone anywhere
he really is without a doubt the worst gm to ever manage a team
i know he played and played well
but his opinion will forever be tied to 0-16 and many more losses than wins
he should be banned from tv, radio, and print
having him do color commentary is like having terrance cody and andre smith
lead conditioning drills or having braylon edwards run ball-catching drills
or allowing flozell adams and alex barron to teach proper reach-blocking technique....

I agree with the sentiments that I'll never really care what his opinions are about anything to do with football. Meaningless.

Having this a$$hole on TV is a slap in the face to any football fan with half a brain. If he keeps his job, then I hope the Lions will never get a home MNF/ThNF game so I don't have to listen to him spew his idiotic garbage about my favorite team that he personnally destroyed.
To add insult to injury, ABC had him do the Michigan/Michigan State game. That is OUR game and they send this f**king idiot to add his drivel. He should be banned from entering SE Michigan.

Matt Millen is a joke and anyone who puts them on their station to "analyze" football is an even bigger joke.
"Marinelli is one of the best coaches I've been around."
I guess that tells you right there how much attention to anything Millen actually put into the Lions....
I don't know what's worse, Matt Millen getting a job "analyzing" a primetime football game, or listening to Jon Gruden praise every person he is asked about.
Who am I kidding, I would rather listen to Jon Gruden praise Al Qeada than listen to Matt Millen talk about anything relating to football.

So wait, a writer from Shutdown Corner is complaining about Millen for things like being annoying, getting facts wrong and general confusion over players' names? The very same Shutdown Corner that can't go a single post without embarrassing misspellings and typos, flawed and/or irrelevant information, and links that go anywhere but where you thought they would lead? Not to mention you guys employ super douche Chris Chase and I would take Millen over him anyday on football related matter.

Zero credibility - Millen couldn't accurately analyze what the brown stains are on his underwear! The NFL should ban him for life, like MLB did to Pete Rose.

Is the NFL Network trying to get me to tune out? I cannot stand Theisman and Millen ruins everything he touches. I don't understand how the NFL cannot provide better announcers--they can pull from the talent pools of 1000s of former players. There must be better announcers out there. I'd rather listen to Mike Mayock lisp his way through the game--at least he knows football and is a draft expert.

MILLEN AS A COMMENTATOR IS A JOKE
Having Matt Millen as a commentator on NFL games is like having Bernie Madoff conduct a seminar on business ethics. It's a fricken joke!!
The guy was an average (at best) blow hard line-backer that couldnt defend against the pass nor could he rush the QB. He was the worst football exec in the history of the game. Yet some genuis at ABC hires the tub of blow hard goo to be a commentator? Huh?
Millen must have compromising photos of an ABC Sr. Exec.

Joe Theismann is the worst announcer ever. I thought Matt Millen was going to punch him any second. How 'bout when Millen was trying to explain about how Jay Cutler works to manage his diabetes and all Joe Theisman wanted to do was make fun of him and talk about cheeseburgers. What a maroon!

It never ceases to amaze me how networks keep blowing it with their sports analysts. People have been criticizing/mocking Theismann for YEARS, but the folks at NFL Network either don't know that or don't care. Either way it's a black mark on a network devoted entirely to football. And Millen? Dear Lord! I mean, the only thing about this pairing even remotely interesting is the way Millen kept disagreeing with Theismann...except neither guy makes good points so the whole thing comes off as a race to the bottom...as well as fairly immature and unprofessional on Millen's part.
The NFL's official network decides to put two analysts on its biggest broadcast...and they completely whiff on both. That is just pathetic. Are there really no better options? Is it possible that there are better guys who don't want to do the game?
