Despite the title, this book is more about the author's opinion of the way women have been treated in various cultures than mythology. When she remembers she is supposed to be writing about mythology her scholarship is decidedly dubious. She says, for example, that 'oestrogen' comes from the name of the goddess Eostre when in fact it is from the Greek 'oistros' and that 'marriage' is from the name of another goddess when in fact it is from a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'young man'. We are also treated to an (unattributed) illustration that purports to show 'costumes of the Druidical Order in pre-Roman Britain c. 100 BC' when in fact it is a late mediæval romanticized fantasy of what a Druid might possibly have looked like. She then refers to the fact that some historians believe they may have found traces of a pagan fertility cult in the Lady Godiva story as if it were accepted historical fact. the book ends with her views on 'free love', fundamentalist religion, AIDS, single parents, date rape ... .But then, what can you expect from a Jungian psychotherapist who is also the Daily Mail's 'Dream Doctor'?

I had hoped to receive a scholarly work on ancient practices and rituals, and instead have received a book full of contradiction and disinformation.

I agree she shows an obvious distaste for christianity and I concur with that. However she also shows a blatant disregard for any from a different culture, attempting to portray us indigenous peoples through the same biased superior attitude as early christianity did our ancestors when they came to this new world. She knows nothing of Native American culture other that what was apparently written in the dime novels of the old west, and little more about the subject matter of this book.

It is very apparent Dening is out of her expertise in writing and delivery of this, dare i say book?
Her lack of knowledge on the subject matter is attempted to be covered by opinion and conjecture. Every act is looked at from the jaded eye of the current selfless society we live in and its customs. Her obvious discomfort in dealing with the subject matter shows in her flagrant displays of cultural bias and an inability to see and write non-judgmentally.

Calling Ancient Sumerian writing hieroglyphs, which is Egyptian, instead of Cuneiform; misleading opinions: Too many contradictions to count, lack of research; superimposition of customs from one side of the world onto people of another continent.

Example of a contradiction: Pg 127-128 she states that in early Judaism sex was only for procreation and only within the confines of marriage (which is false). Yet on Pg., 176 she states that Martin Luther had the same view as the Hebrew/Judaism, that virginity was not glorified (which is the actual truth). On page 128 there are a total of three contradictions alone.

To say, "little is known about the techniques of sex practiced by the early Hebrew" pg 128, either shows lack of research or an attempt to deliberately mislead the reader.

On Native American Indian customs and sexuality were many blatant falsehoods. There was no prostitution among our peoples before colonization and neither did we believe in ownership of land so therefore land did not belong to women to be inherited. However the tepee or 'house' did belong to the woman. We did not sale women as wives. There was no true hierarchal, high status family-social order to marry 'up' to. Amazing! These also show either lack of research or an attempt to mislead.

I have a passion for anything historical, and hoped to learn something new, instead found a book filled with the writers own dissonance and belittling to any outside her ideas of society.
