About the Author

Faith Wallis is Associate Professor at McGill University, jointly appointed in the Department of History and the Department of Social Studies of Medicine. She is the co-editor of Medieval Science, Technology and Medicine: An Encyclopedia (Routledge, 2005) and the author of essays and translations on medieval science and medicine.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this little - actually, quite extensive - reader in Medieval Medicine. However, if you are an herbalist or natural healer interested in really learning the secrets of Medieval Medicine, I'm afraid you would be a little disappointed, although this book is guaranteed to deepen and enrich your background knowledge of the subject. I have scanned through the contents, and it looks like this little marvel will provide me with interesting and informative reading pleasure for many days to come.

If one keeps in mind that this reader was designed mainly for history students to get an overview of how the medical profession was in the Middle Ages, one will be fine with it. It presents excerpts from many fine original works on Medieval Medicine, so one can get a real window into the profession of medicine as it was practiced in the Middle Ages. But alas, many of the excerpts are far too short, and cut off right before you "get to the good part", leaving you dangling if you want to get the whole story. What I would like to see in the future is a multivolume library on Medieval Medicne put out by the University of Toronto Press, or by anybody else, consisting of these seminal works in their entirety. I hope that this dream of mine will someday be realized.

If someone wants to start building a study of medical history, this is a good place! The numerous selections in the anthology are regularly preceded by a brief but deep introduction of time, place and background of the selection. At times one hears a dismissal of history as "just a bunch of names and dates: boring!" This refutes this nonsense! "Well begun is half done!"
