The Victorâs Cage
JayâÄsanâÄgatÄ BuddhÄ
JetvÄ MÄraá¹ savÄhanaá¹
Catu-saccÄsabhaá¹ rasaá¹
Ye piviá¹ su narÄsabhÄ
The Buddhas, noble men who drank the nectar of the four noble truths, having come to the victory seat, having defeated MÄra together with his mount:
Taá¹haá¹ karâÄdayo BuddhÄ
Aá¹á¹ha-vÄ«sati nÄyakÄ
Sabbe patiá¹á¹hitÄ mayhaá¹
Matthake te munissarÄ.
These Buddhasâ28 leaders, sovereign sages beginning with Taá¹haá¹ karaâare all established on the crown of my head.
SÄ«se patiá¹á¹hito mayhaá¹
Buddho dhammo dvilocane
Saá¹ gho patiá¹á¹hito mayhaá¹
Ure sabba-guá¹Äkaro.
The Buddha is established in my head, the Dhamma in my two eyes, the Saá¹ ghaâthe mine of all virtuesâis established in my chest.
Hadaye me Anuruddho
SÄriputto ca dakkhiá¹e
Koá¹á¸añño piá¹á¹hi-bhÄgasmiá¹
MoggallÄno ca vÄmake.
Anuruddha is in my heart, and SÄrÄ«putta on my right. Koá¹á¸añña is behind me, and MoggallÄna on my left.
Dakkhiá¹e savane mayhaá¹
Äsuá¹ Änanda-RÄhulo
Kassapo ca MahÄnÄmo
UbhâÄsuá¹ vÄma-sotake.
Änanda & RÄhula are in my right ear, Kassapa & MahÄnÄma are both in my left ear.
Kesato piá¹á¹hi-bhÄgasmiá¹
[Kesante piá¹á¹hi-bhÄgasmiá¹]
Suriyo-va pabhaá¹ karo
Nisinno siri-sampanno
Sobhito muni-puá¹ gavo.
Sobhita, the noble sage, sits in consummate glory, shining like the sun behind a hair on my head [all over the hair at the back of my head].
KumÄra-kassapo thero
MahesÄ« citta-vÄdako
So mayhaá¹ vadane niccaá¹
Patiá¹á¹hÄsi guá¹Äkaro.
Elder KumÄrakassapaâgreat sage, brilliant speaker, a mine of virtueâ is constantly in my mouth.
Puá¹á¹o Aá¹ gulimÄlo ca
UpÄlÄ« Nanda-SÄ«valÄ«
TherÄ pañca ime jÄtÄ
NalÄá¹e tilakÄ mama.
These five eldersâPuá¹á¹a, Aá¹ gulimÄla, UpÄlÄ«, Nanda, & SÄ«valÄ«âhave arisen as auspicious marks at the middle of my forehead.

VijitÄ jina-sÄvakÄ
EtesÄ«ti mahÄtherÄ
Jitavanto jinâorasÄ
JalantÄ sÄ«la-tejena
Aá¹ gam-aá¹ gesu saá¹á¹hitÄ.
The rest of the 80 great eldersâvictorious, disciples of the Victor, sons of the Victor, shining with the majesty of moral virtueâare established in the various parts of my body.
Ratanaá¹ purato Äsi
Dakkhiá¹e Metta-suttakaá¹.
Dhajaggaá¹ pacchato Äsi
VÄme Aá¹ gulimÄlakaá¹.
Khandha-Mora-parittañca
Äá¹ÄnÄá¹iya-suttakaá¹
ÄkÄse chadanaá¹ Äsi
SesÄ pÄkÄra-saá¹á¹hitÄ.
The Ratana Sutta is in front, the Metta Sutta to the right. The Dhajagga Sutta is behind, the Aá¹ gulimÄla Paritta to the left. The Khandha & Mora Parittas and the Äá¹ÄnÄá¹iya Sutta are a roof in space. The remaining suttas are established as a rampart.
JinÄ nÄnÄ-varasaá¹yuttÄ
[JinÄá¹Äbala-saá¹yuttÄ]
SattappÄkÄra-laá¹ katÄ
VÄta-pittâÄdi-sañjÄtÄ
BÄhirâajjhattâupaddavÄ
AsesÄ vinayaá¹ yantu
Ananta-jina-tejasÄ.
Excellently bound in many ways by the Victor,
[Bound by the Victorâs authority & strength],
seven ramparts arrayed against them, may all misfortunes within & withoutâcaused by such things as wind or bileâbe destroyed without trace through the unending Victorâs majesty.
Vasato me sakiccena
SadÄ Sambuddha-pañjare
Jina-pañjara-majjhamhi
ViharantaṠmahītale
SadÄ pÄlentu maá¹ sabbe
Te mahÄ-purisÄsabhÄ.
As I dwell, in all my affairs, always in the cage of the Self-awakened One, living on earth in the middle of the cage of the Victors, I am always guarded by all of those great noble men.
Iccevamanto sugutto surakkho.
JinÄnubhÄvena jitâupaddavo.
DhammÄnubhÄvena jitÄrisaá¹ gho.
Saá¹ ghÄnubhÄvena jitâantarÄyo.
SaddhammÄnubhÄva-pÄlito
carÄmi jina-pañjare-ti.
Thus am I utterly well-sheltered, well-protected.
Through the power of the Victor, misfortunes are vanquished.
Through the power of the Dhamma, the enemy horde is vanquished.
Through the power of the Saá¹ gha, dangers are vanquished.
Guarded by the power of the True Dhamma,
I go about in the Victorâs Cage.
