NEW YORK - A few weeks ago, the Food Network here broadcast the first episode of "Sweet Genius," an eight-part contest series starring Ron Ben-Israel, a successful New York pastry chef. Ordinarily, a competitive show like this features a panel of judges, but in this case Ben-Israel is the sole arbiter. Indeed, as The New York Times put it, he is "judge, jury and executioner." He assigns the tasks to the four contestants, all master pastry chefs themselves and some also owners of confectionery stores, and he's the one who determines who takes home the $10,000 prize at the end of every show.
