Thematically resonant for its time and filled with living nuance to this day. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the rare 60s films that never seem dated.
Funny Girl lives up to its title by being funny, but not at the expense of its emotional core that Barbara Streisand beautifully transcends into the hearts of the audience.
The Truman Show cannot overcome it's flimsy direction and schmaltzy plot. Instead of making a film with a relatable protagonist, the film chooses instead to make him more of a victim for the audience in and out of the movie to feel bad about. The film has interesting writing ideas, but all of that impressive effort is drowned out by the film's sentimental syrup.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is not as atrocious as its previous entry. Even so, the film cannot survive its underwhelming characters/villain, bloated runtime, plot conveniences, and convoluted ending.
A long drawn out snooze fest. The length of Dune: Part Two focuses too heavily on representing evil and disgusting values such as witchcraft, cannibalism, and idol worship. A film about a boy and his mother drinking worm poison that convinces them to have him become a false messiah so that he can get a bunch of people to worship him in order for him to go to war with a bunch of other people. The film has poorly developed villains who are given a lot of screen time just for them to die and be thrown away. There isn't very much conflict or tension because the film's bloated runtime is so focused on this kid becoming a false idol. Once he becomes ****, defeating the villains becomes a quick and easy piece of cake. Zendaya's character was somehow the only logical and moral one in the entire film.
Barbie is a splendid film with storytelling made to trick its audience while also providing enough color and humor for a satirical adventure. Barbie is a subversive masterpiece that tells a tale about a product of "feminism" confused about what it means to be a real man and a "feminist" icon curious of the importance of life and motherhood.
The Mother is a suspenseful assassin film and yet it also has a thematically gripping story hidden underneath. Jennifer Lopez rocks in this dang solid film worth watching on Mother's Day.
Enola Holmes 2 doubles down on the energy to its advantage while showcasing a more exciting, wholesome, and overall inspiring sequel that takes real events into consideration.
Hidden Figures nuanced historical references can bring inspiration and nostalgia to those wishing to remember the great accomplishments done by three ladies that have succeeded in making their names no longer hidden in this earth.
The six women of the film steal the show in Steel Magnolias with their terrific performances. masterfully shifting from comedy to drama to bring an emotional train ride while entertaining us with their top notch chemistry.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is as quirky as it's title hints at, but is sweeter than expected. Hathaway's charm and the movie's message makes the magic come alive.
A frequently fun buddy film, an inspiring coming of age story, and an interracial romance story. Bend It Like Beckham lives up to its surprisingly symbolic title.
The critics have no morality if they think a good movie is one that has a dude who throws away his wife and everything she’s done for him just for another woman who shows him porn. The only thing this movie is telling me is that atheists are immoral because they are too arrogant to be under a divine being.
The film’s disjointed plot is further burdened by rushed character relationships that aren’t properly concluded, key plot conflicts that are introduced after an hour into the movie and have no consequences on the end result other than to move the film into unnecessary directions that thematically fill the mind with a void of emptiness. Imitation Game is a textbook definition of a worthless waste of your life.
Mad Max: Fury Road may be too wildy over-the-top for some, but with Charlize Theron's charismatic and daring performance along with her other heroic companions, there is something to like.
Gravity's spellbinding cinematography combined with its continuous shots make for a visually thrilling, emotionally suspenseful, and personally relatable experience. Its dialogue and visuals craft cryptic narratives to revolutionize the art of conveying insinuated and indirected themes.
Kiki's Delivery Service may not be as imaginative as Miyazaki's top movies, but its service to the same sweet slice of life story-telling and flush energetic heroine may deliver fans everything their looking for while providing more of the usual visual craft.
Iron Man has no new arc. Hulk is deleted. Civil War events have no affect. Potential between Iron Man and Thanos is butchered. Thanos arc is butchered. Thor is a jarring one note stock character. Captain America has no arc. Painfully predictable plot with excruciatingly cliche concept. Potentially powerful story is butchered. Expects us to care about the franchise based on previous films even though it has nothing to do with previous films. No consistency to infinity war. Infinity War did not set these characters up. It only set up Thanos, but Thanos arc is changed and is turned to one note. Thanos dies in first five minutes. and the film focuses on plot points that had nothing to do with Infinity War. Endgame also focuses on plot points that the franchise had failed to get us to care.
There was not plot. This was just meant for the experiment. No actual character arc. Contrived motivations. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Sand Man fights spiderman for no reason. No explanation for Mysterio's ability to frame Parker. I have no clue behind why the conflict existed. Ridiculously horrriblwy. Fallaciously desired plot with so many randomly pitiful conflicts appearing and dismissing every other solution. So much more they could have done. There is no way this plot could work. They release villains and allow them to help them cure them. Soooooooo predictably luny. Like you really didn't expect them to turn against you. Somehow, one villain makes a speech and all other villains agree with him. Some of them don't even consistently follow up with their characters. Parker has a cringy and contrived revenge plotline and we are just suppose to expect the villains to be good now. I still dont' care about Parker's relationship with his auuuuuuuuuuuunt. They don't allow us to care about aunt may and so her supposed inspiration in the plot has no weight and we never saw why she was the way she was through her actions. Moral conflict is stupid and is only used to act as a plot device for the writers. Every plot decision is devoid of logic and is only for the purpose of moving the story in a direction that the writers want it to go in. Plot could end easily, but is continued for no good reason. Butt loads of scenes that do nothing to tell you about the characters or develop them. Characters are dumb. The hearts of these villains need to change too.
Alien starts slow, but the thrills get deeper and deeper. It is one of those films where the ending is the most satisfying aspect. Alien showed that sci-fi babes could rule the genre and why films nowadays are garbage in comparison. Ellen Ripley was a revolutionary character for her time and has demonstrated how fascinating films like these can be. The way the ending combines writing and filmmaking to portray its audience as if they are like the alien stalking Ripley creates a sense of dread and suspense that makes the finale all the more satisfying.
A change in directors butchers Shrek 2 and heavily undermines the only positive aspects of the first film. With the writing department thrown off the cliff, nothing can save the film from its trend of ongoing stock characters, massive missed opportunities, and rote rehashes of the original.
The Breadwinner is an intriguing, suspenseful, and exotically animated experience. Full of heartfelt character relationships and a thought-provoking parable that will leave you curious of its meaning.
A mixed tone, bloated runtime, uneven plotting, and unbearable expository pacing completely diminish the film's desire to provide a more cheery and empowering story that its following installments fail to achieve. The Sorcerer's Stone's minuscule intentions are unable to overcome its colossal troubles to adapt the story.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind breathes life into its animation and characters. A cleverly crafted world that deals with serious and heartbreaking issues in a surprisingly epic, thematic, and unabashed way. Miyazaki's environmental masterpiece showcases the power, brilliance, and affection of its protagonist.
