Congress Reporter

Benjamin Guggenheim is seen.

Benjamin Guggenheim is a congressional reporter at POLITICO focusing on domestic policy. In that capacity, he keeps close tabs on the personalities and dynamics governing the most important committees in Congress, such as the tax writing House Ways and Means Committee, the House Energy and Commerce Committee and related committees in the Senate.

As part of his role, Benjamin writes the policy sections for POLITICO's Inside Congress newsletter and helps the Congress team cover the biggest legislative stories in Congress, with an eye towards making battles over weedy financial, tax and health policiesaccessible and interesting to readers.

Benjamin takes particular pride in stories that delve deep into how Congress actually works and expose the influence and lobbying campaigns that shape legislation behind the scenes.

He won the National Press Foundation's Everett McKinley Dirksen Award for for Distinguished Reporting of Congress in 2024 for his expose on the lobbying forces that have shaped the 401(k) retirement system. He was also a finalist for the 2025 Livingston award recognizing excellence in national reporting by journalists under 35.

A Los Angeles native, Benjamin graduated in 2019 with a degree in international relations. He previously was a reporter for the trade publication Tax Notes and part of the investigative team covering the coronavirus pandemic for The New York Times.
