1st meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee on the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty

The process of ratification of the Lisbon Treaty by the Hellenic Parliament was launched with the 1st Meeting of the Special Parliamentary Committee, which will study the relevant draft law. Within the framework of this first meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Yannis Valinakis stressed that the experience of the past few years provoked concern regarding the prospects and substance of the European integration process, pointing out that “the signing and implementation of the Reform Treaty puts an end to the latest and quite adventurous institutional reform efforts, while concurrently paving the way for a new era in Europe – not necessarily easier, but we would like to think more optimistic.” Mr. Valinakis stated that “the Reform Treaty is the result of many compromises, consultations and initiatives.” Nevertheless, its implementation is another important step in the European integration process. (…) It is not ideal, but it is realistic, taking the particularities of individual EU member states into account.” In his speech, Mr. Valinakis also mentioned FYROM, stressing that “the only way towards the EU goes through the adoption of the principles and values of European political culture.” This is the message we sent from the Bucharest Summit and this is the message we will reiterate if need be. (…) The European future that Skopje claims to want is incompatible with Balkan practices of the past.” In closing, Mr. Valinakis rendered it clear that Greece’s position in the hard core of European integration is a non-negotiable strategic choice, and said he sees the ratification of the Reform Treaty by the Hellenic Parliament as a message of self-confidence and solidarity to our partners.
