IT TOOK A PARTY in Berkeley for the Atlanta-reared Sound Tribe Sector Nine to finally find a home.
The innovative rockelectronica act got its start in 1997 as a group of musically inclined high-school mates and like-minded neighborhood friends with a shared passion for old-school Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders and other sonic explorers.
The band, commonly known as STS9, quickly jumped from playing local clubs to regional touring success. Yet it was its first trip west to the Bay Area that STS9 credits as the turning point in its career.
"We got this vibe and we felt at home," says STS9 guitarist Hunter Brown during a recent telephone interview from Miami. "It drew us in so much that we had to move out there and really become a part of that environment. …
