Power Africa in Senegal

Senegal Electricity Profile: 600mw currently installed, 55% access, 28% rural access

Senegal’s primary source of electricity generation is oil, translating to some of the most expensive electricity tariff in sub-Saharan Africa – over US$0.26/kWh.  Renewable energy development has been seen as part of the solution to both high electricity costs and low electricity access. The government supports renewable development through the Ministry of Renewable Energy and an Inter-ministerial Committee on Renewable Energy, and through the adoption of a National Strategy for Renewable Energy targeting a 10% renewable mix by 2020. Based on 2013 data, Senegal’s national electrification rate reached 55% (28% in rural areas, 90% in urban areas).
