Biography

[edit]

Jones was born on December 7, 1989,[2] in Garland, Texas,[3] the son of Cindy, a special educator, and Patrick Jones, a building contractor.[4][5] He has an older brother, John.[6]

Jones was raised in Richardson, a suburb of Dallas,[5][3] and attended the high school where his mother worked, and was encouraged to lapping up ballet, tap, and theater classes.[5] He discovered acting in speech class and began performing professionally shortly afterwards, mostly in films and TV series shot in and around his home state, beginning with the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men (2007).[3] He then played the drummer in Friday Night Lights (2008–2010) and Walt Jr.'s best friend in Breaking Bad (2009–2010).[3]

Later, at 19, he met Robert Hudson and, together with A.J. Durham, formed the experimental folk-rock band Robert Jones.[7] Jones then had supporting roles in The Last Exorcism, released in 2010, and X-Men: First Class, released in 2011. The following year saw the release of Contraband, the English-language remake of award-winning Icelandic film Reykjavík-Rotterdam, and Byzantium, both of which featured Jones in supporting roles.[8]

Also in 2012 he had his first starring role in Antiviral, the feature-film debut from writer–director Brandon Cronenberg, son of Canadian horror director David Cronenberg.[8][9]

In 2017, he appeared in American Made, The Florida Project, Get Out, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.[8][9][10] The latter three films received nominations at the 90th Academy Awards; the latter two were both nominated for Best Picture.[11]

Jones released his debut studio album, The Mother Stone, on May 1, 2020.[12] It was recorded in Los Angeles and released through the Brooklyn-based Sacred Bones Records.[13][14]

In 2021, he starred as Australian mass-murderer Martin Bryant in Justin Kurzel's Nitram, which earned Jones the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor.[15]

Jones took on the lead role in the 2023 Luc Besson film Dogman, which made Besson a great admirer of him. Calling him his "muse", Besson began to think of possible films to make to cast him in, and decided on the story of Dracula, which was released in 2025 as Dracula: A Love Tale.[16]
