Ashley Jana

[edit]

Ashley Jana is an American singer-songwriter, composer, lyricist, librettist, music producer, orchestrator, and music engineer based in New York City. She is known for having more than 20 of her original songs featured in the television series Dance Moms, including “Electricity.” She is also the composer and co-writer of the musical Figaro: An Original Musical, which premiered in concert at the London Palladium in 2025. Jana’s songs have appeared on the Fox television drama Empire, including "Feels So Good" (featuring Jussie Smollett and Rumer Willis), and she has co-written tracks for international artists such as the K-pop group TWICE ("Jelly Jelly") and Italian pop star Giorgia ("Scelgo Ancora Te"). In addition to her musical work, she has been featured in publications such as Business Insider, Mic, and Digital Music News for her advocacy on fair artist compensation in the streaming era.

Career

[edit]

Ashley Jana composes and produces music across multiple genres, including pop, indie, electronic, and musical theatre. Her songs have accumulated over 70 million streams globally. She first came to broader attention when more than 20 of her original songs were featured in the television series Dance Moms, including “Electricity.”[1]

Beyond her success in popular music, Jana has expanded into musical theatre. She composed the music and lyrics and co-wrote the book for Figaro: An Original Musical, which was presented in two special concert performances at the London Palladium in 2025. The production drew attention from major theatre outlets: Playbill reported on its world premiere in the article *“Figaro: An Original Musical Sets 2025 London Concert World Premiere”*,[2] while WhatsOnStage covered it under the headline *“Figaro: An Original Musical to be presented at the London Palladium”*.[3] Broadway-focused publication BroadwayWorld also profiled the event in its feature *“FIGARO: AN ORIGINAL MUSICAL Will Have its World Premiere at the London Palladium in 2025”*, further emphasizing Jana’s role as the show’s composer and co-writer.[4]

This progression from independent pop songwriter to musical theatre composer has been documented by independent sources across both the music and theatre industries, demonstrating her versatility and expanding influence.

Advocacy

[edit]

Jana actively advocates for better compensation for independent artists on streaming platforms, notably criticizing Spotify's royalty practices. In 2019, she publicly questioned former Spotify executive Jim Anderson at a Sync Summit conference about why the company would not pay artists at least one cent per stream. This exchange was widely covered in the press when a recording of the event was released in 2021. The industry outlet Digital Music News published the article *"Spotify Executive Calls Artist 'Entitled' for Requesting Payment of One Penny Per Stream"*, which highlighted Jana’s persistence in pressing the issue.[5]

Mainstream publications also reported on the controversy: Business Insider ran the story *"Former Spotify boss says Taylor Swift doesn't need streaming royalties"*, crediting Jana as the artist who challenged Anderson,[6] while Mic published *"A former Spotify exec called Taylor Swift and other artists ‘entitled’ for wanting higher streaming rates"*, which described Jana’s advocacy as central to the story.[7]

These independent articles provide significant coverage of Jana’s role in the debate, framing her as an advocate for artists’ rights in the streaming era.
