Plastidobe is a sustainable housing construction system developed in Peru that combines recycled plastic sheets with rammed earth techniques.[1][2] The system is designed to provide affordable, thermally efficient, and environmentally friendly housing, particularly in rural and underserved regions.[3]

History

[edit]

Plastidobe was founded in 2017 by Peruvian architect Abel “Willy” Gómez-Morón, together with his sons Harry Gómez-Morón Castro and Arturo Gómez-Morón Castro.[1] Willy Gómez was an architect recognized for his work in casino and entertainment design in Latin America, and later co-founded Plastidobe as part of his interest in sustainable housing.[1]

Technology

[edit]

The Plastidobe system uses recycled plastic sheets as structural and formwork components, combined with rammed earth walls. This hybrid method provides:

  • Thermal regulation: earthen walls maintain stable interior temperatures.
  • Affordability: reliance on locally available earth and recycled materials reduces costs.
  • Sustainability: incorporation of plastic waste mitigates environmental impact.[4]

The method is also claimed to allow relatively rapid construction, good thermal comfort, and seismic resistance when combined with tapial earth walls.[5]

Projects

[edit]

Plastidobe has been proposed for rural housing prototypes in Peru to test resistance, thermal performance, and scalability. One planned pilot project involves an eco-home in **Prados de Paraíso**, combining Plastidobe with traditional tapial walls. The project emphasizes reduced environmental impact, thermal comfort, and seismic resistance.[5]

Recognition

[edit]

In 2017, Plastidobe received the A’Design Award in Italy for its ecological housing system.[2] A first prototype was created in 2021, and in 2022, the system passed seismic resistance tests at the Structures Laboratory of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP).[1]

In **2025**, Plastidobe was awarded first place at *Demo Day PeakUp*, part of the Generación Impacto program organized by Universidad Continental and Wichay. Media coverage highlighted its innovation in combining recycled plastic with earth to create bioclimatic eco-homes, particularly for rural areas affected by extreme cold.[6]
