Sundanese calendar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sundanese calendar (Sundanese: ᮊᮜ ᮄᮓᮨᮁ ᮞᮥᮔ᮪ᮓ, romanized: Kala Ider Sunda) is a calendar system used by the traditional society of the Sundanese in western part of Java, Indonesia.[1] This calendar was first calculated on 23 December 78 AD.[2] The Sundanese calendar itself has almost the same number of months, weeks, and days as the Gregorian calendar, the difference is in the naming of the months, weeks, and days. The calendar system consists of three systems, namely based on calculations of the rotation of the moon (Kala Candra Caka Sunda), calculation system for the circulation of the sun (Kala Surya Saka Sunda), and Kala Cakra Caka Sunda.[3]

Months

[edit]

The first month or first month in the Sundanese calendar is Kartika and the twelfth month is called Asuji. The naming of the months and the number of days for each month is similar to that used in the Hijri calendar system. So this Sundanese calendar system is compatible with the Kala Candra Caka Sunda calendar system, which has a number of days per year of 354/355 days. For the Kala Surya Saka Sunda system, or the Sundanese calendar system which is based on the sun, it is similar to the Gregorian calendar, which has a number of days per year of 365/366 days.
