... that local folklore links Boghead(pictured), a Northumbrian bastle, to the story of Barty Milburn, an accomplished swordsman and killer of Scots?
Source: On local folklore, see here: "Legend has it that Bog Head Bastle was the residence of Barty Milburn, and / or Corbitt Jack, correspondingly the alternative names for the building are either Barty's Pele or Corbie's Castle." On the story, see the long blockquote in the article. You can also read about it in the local press here, but the other sources are more reliable; the newspaper story gets a few things wrong.
@J Milburn: The article is a very interesting read and I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about bastles. I like the structure as it gives the reader enough context to understand the topic, and the writing style is very clear and explains specialist terms. I have just three suggestions and as they do not affect the DYK nomination I thought it best to mention them here:
It might be helpful to explain that a barmkin is a fortified enclosure; otherwise the other uncommon terms that I spotted were all given some in-text explanation.
In case you're considering taking the article to GAN (and the article is close) you might need to cite specific page numbers with Lax 1999 and Quartermaine 2008 to enhance the verifiability.
while the bastle itself has a rare feature in the doorway: I assume the feature in question is the "quenching hole", either way it would be handy to specify what the feature is.
@Richard Nevell: Thanks; these are really valuable suggestions, and I've made some quick changes. You're right about the page references. I think there may be some more sources out there that I should consult before a nomination at GAC, but it might be on the cards! Josh Milburn (talk) 06:17, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
