Associativity isomorphism (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View log | edits since nomination)

The concept of associativity isomorphisms appears in the definitions of monoidal category and weak 2-category, but when defining them, it is necessary to explain not only associativity isomorphisms but also unit isomorphisms. Therefore, I think that articles that only explain associativity isomorphisms cannot meet WP:N. Also, in the Applications section the references is tagged as unreliable. Furthermore the phrase associativity isomorphism also appears in the braided monoidal category and the symmetric monoidal category, therefore this article cannot be merge into the monoidal category. • Merge to coherency (homotopy theory): I agree with the nominator on the notability, which is clearly questionable. But I think the merger should work here just fine. -- Taku (talk) 04:53, 23 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: @Aryanmp16: I have read your comment on Talk:Associativity isomorphism. Since AfD (Articles for deletion) will be closed in a week at the earliest, I recommend posting your comments on Associativity isomorphism on this page. It was Ldm1954 who tagged it as unreliable reference, so he might have some advice on that tag. See WP:AFDDISCUSS for guide on how to add comments. --SilverMatsu (talk) 03:08, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • In addition: @Aryanmp16: If you have any questions about the AfD, you can ask them at the Teahouse. --SilverMatsu (talk) 08:05, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The tagging was standard. The source is a Wiki, and those are not generally considered as reliable sources because they are not curated the way peer reviewed papers are; please read WP:RS. The "dubious" and "speculation?" tags are because I think the claim of many applications is not firmly grounded in well-cited and established science. Do note some of the tags have a "?". (I am not voting on this AfD.) Ldm1954 (talk) 03:24, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment 2: Since roughly speaking monoidal categories are analogous to the concept of monoids, so I searching for the concept of analogues of semigroups. Then, I found a concept called "semigroupal category" in the following paper:Yetter, D.N. (2003). "Abelian categories of modules over a (Lax) monoidal functor". Advances in Mathematics. 174 (2): 266–309. doi:10.1016/S0001-8708(02)00041-5. But, this may not be relevant to the AfD. --SilverMatsu (talk) 00:43, 26 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I found another reference, which seems to explain this concept as a derived from the monoidal categories. Ref:Boyarchenko, Mitya; Drinfeld, Vladimir (2014). "Character sheaves on unipotent groups in positive characteristic: Foundations". Selecta Mathematica. 20: 125–235. arXiv:0810.0794. doi:10.1007/s00029-013-0133-7. If we(I?) were to explain semigroupal categories, it would be better to use a subsection of monoidal categories. There seem to be few papers that explain semigroupal categories. Even as a subsection of monoidal categories, semigroupal categories may not meet the WP:N.--SilverMatsu (talk) 01:45, 27 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment:I don't oppose with the merge to Coherency (homotopy theory), because I think it makes sense to explain associativity isomorphisms and unit isomorphisms in the same place. Whether we delete or merge an article, we have to check that Associativity isomorphism does not meet the WP:N, so I started this AfD. Since the monoidal category needs to explain both associativity isomorphisms and unit isomorphisms, so if keep the article, I think semigroupal categories need to meet WP:N.--SilverMatsu (talk) 00:29, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
