This welcome and well-received book by Philip Gooding at McGill University in Montreal is published by Cambridge University Press in the Cambridge Oceanic Histories series and described by them as follows:

“This is the first interdisciplinary history of Lake Tanganyika and of eastern Africa’s relationship with the wider Indian Ocean World during the nineteenth century. Philip Gooding deploys diverse source materials, including oral, climatological, anthropological, and archaeological sources, to ground interpretations of the better-known, European-authored archive in local epistemologies and understandings of the past. Gooding shows that Lake Tanganyika’s shape, location, and distinctive lacustrine environment contributed to phenomena traditionally associated with the history of the wider Indian Ocean World being negotiated, contested, and re-imagined in particularly robust ways. He adds novel contributions to African and Indian Ocean histories of urbanism, the environment, spirituality, kinship, commerce, consumption, material culture, bondage, slavery, Islam, and capitalism. African peoples and environments are positioned as central to the histories of global economies, religions, and cultures.”

There’s a lot for other researchers to build on here, as well as gaps to fill, for example in considering the impacts of the above on language use around the lake and beyond, and by using linguistic evidence itself as a historical source. While we can’t expect all historians to be linguists, an understanding of the basics does help, as Gooding illustrates by his eccentric decision to anglicise Swahili and other vernacular terms by chopping off their noun class prefixes. Unfortunately, he does this inconsistently and sometimes wrongly. The result is a muddle of conventional usage and unfamiliar neologisms that make little sense without the glosses supplied. It’s embarrassing that the examiners and other readers of the author’s work as it evolved from doctoral dissertation (SOAS, 2017) into book did not pick this up, and it detracts from the author’s otherwise fine scholarship.

Największy wkład w badania nad nią wnieśli przede wszystkim Krzysztof Pawłowski, który opublikował na ten temat kilka ważnych artykułów, głównie w latach 60. i 70. 1 , a także-w odniesieniu do środowiska lwowskiego, Jakub Lewicki 2. The paintings we have studied so far, from Chardin, David, Villers and Runge, have all featured the human face and body as central compositional elements. We might quarrel over whether the works by Chardin and Runge should be considered 'portraits' in the strictest sense of that word, but there is certainly justification for using that term with all of them. For artists at the turn of the century in 1800, portraiture was, in most cases, a way to make money (as David did, via commissions) or a way to save money (as it was for Runge and Villers) for painters who had little access to other types of models for their work. Even at this late date, portraits were not the way an artist was expected to make an impression on the art world. Historical painting was universally considered the way for an artist to truly display talent. That is how David had become known to the French art world, and it largely accounts for why Runge's work hardly made any impression at all on his contemporaries. Chardin is another matter. He, after all, was a magician.

Eco-criticism as a separate branch of study has only been established in the latter decades of the last century but the mutual relationship of man and nature has always been a matter of interest for poets and writers down the ages. The growing environment issues have recently attracted the concerns of scientists and philosophers equally. Literature as a mirror of social environment reflects the interconnectedness of all life forms on earth and natural features. This paper is a keen attempt to investigate the relationship of man and physical environment in the light of eco-critical theories and seeks to establish how English literature has been instrumental in developing interest of people towards the environmental concerns. Select texts from Indian and Britishfiction have been approached for the study and examples have been drawn to establish the role of literature in creating ecological consciousness.

This article explores the theme of solitude in J.-K. Huysmans’ narrative fictions À Rebours (Against the grain) (1884) and À vau-l’eau (With the Flow) (1882). Huysmans presents solitude as an existential condition, deeply intertwined with the characters’ psychological states and their estrangement from society. In À Rebours, the protagonist des Esseintes retreats into a self-imposed isolation, rejecting the external world in favor of an artificial, solitary existence. His solitude, however, leads to a deeper sense of alienation and psychological disintegration. In contrast, in À vau-l’eau, the character Folantin experiences solitude as a result of social and economic marginalization. His loneliness is not a choice, but rather a consequence of his failure to integrate into society. The study highlights how Huysmans uses solitude to illustrate the inherent struggles of individualism in modern society.

This paper explores the intersections of science, art, and aesthetics through Dr. Robert John Thornton’s Temple of Flora (1799) and John Ruskin’s writings on nature, particularly Modern Painters (1843–60) and Proserpina (1875–86). At the turn of the nineteenth century, Thornton produced one of the most ambitious botanical books of his age. Combining Linnaean taxonomy with dramatic landscapes and poetic texts, Temple of Flora blurred the boundaries between scientific accuracy and artistic imagination. By embedding flowers within their native or allegorical settings, Thornton elevated botanical illustration into a vehicle of beauty, symbolism, and moral reflection.

The paper argues that Thornton’s vision foreshadowed key aspects of Ruskin’s later philosophy of nature. Ruskin consistently emphasized attentive observation, holistic understanding, and the “life story” of plants—an approach that resonates with Thornton’s depictions of blossoms at different stages of growth and decay. Although Ruskin never explicitly cited Temple of Flora, his high regard for William Blake’s engravings for Thornton’s Pastorals of Virgil and his immersion in the same London intellectual milieu suggest indirect points of contact. Both figures rejected narrow scientific objectivity in favor of a synthesis of truth, beauty, and spiritual meaning.

By placing Thornton and Ruskin in dialogue, this paper highlights a transdisciplinary genealogy linking botanical science, natural theology, and Victorian aesthetics. It argues that Temple of Flora not only shaped contemporary perceptions of nature but also anticipated Ruskin’s enduring influence on the Pre-Raphaelites and the broader Victorian culture of art and science. Ultimately, the project reveals how botanical illustration functioned as a crucible where disciplinary boundaries dissolved, enabling new ways of seeing, representing, and reflecting on the natural world.

In De geest van de dichter (Multatuliprijs 1991) voert ze zogenaamde gesprekken met negentiende-eeuwse schrijvers. Zij is columniste van NRC Handelsblad. In 1998 ontving zij de Prins Bernhard Fondsprijs voor de Geesteswetenschappen. In 2001 verzorgde zij de uitgave in de Griffioenreeks van De gedichten van De Schoolmeester. in schoolmeesters en dominees de dienst uitmaakten. Het hele leven was bekrompen en benepen, leerde ik. De negentiende eeuw die ik kende, kreeg een masker opgezet, waardoor ik het vertrouwde niet meer herkende. Het levende gezicht werd onzichtbaar achter de onbeweeglijke en verstarde trekken van het masker. Mijn leraar Nederlands dweepte met de Tachtigers, die niet bij de negentiende eeuw gerekend werden. Ik leerde dat die pas echte literatuur geschreven hadden en dat pas daarna iets gebeurde in de Nederlandse letterkunde dat Europees niveau had. In de schoolbibliotheek vond ik werk van Jacob van Lennep, van De Schoolmeester, van Piet Paaltjens en van Nicolaas Beets. Ik vond dat niet zo heel saai als de leraar beweerde. En ook las ik Tolstoj, Alexandre Dumas, Emily , Bronte, Charles Dickens en Walter Scott. Ik vond dat heel mooi, minstens zo mooi als Jacob van Lennep. Toen ging ik studeren en weer leerde ik dat de negentiende eeuw een tijd van verval was, waarin geen letterkunde van enig niveau geschreven werd. Maar als ik de negentiende-eeuwers las, vond ik hun taalgebruik rijk en hun verhaallijnen krachtig. Ik werd eigenwijs en vond dat de Tachtigers overschat, en de vroege negentiende eeuw onderschat werd. Door een voorbestemd toeval vond ik de onuitgegeven brieven van Gerrit van de Linde, alias De Schoolmeester, in een Amsterdams ar- chief. Het was alsof ik van de achtbaan naar beneden duizelde. Die brieyen staan zo ver van elke sufheid en saaiheid af, ze zijn zo emotioneel, in zo'n ongewoon expressieve taal geschreven, zo kunstig zijn alle mogelijkheden van de taal uitgebuit, dat ik besefte dat ik die niet voor mezelf mocht houden. Ik was nog student toen ik besloot die brieven uit te geyen. Ik ging me verdiepen in de negentiende-eeuwse geschiedenis, in het alledaagse leven, de omgangsvormen, de mentaliteit kortom. Toen ontdekte ik de rijkdom van de veranderingen in de negentiende eeuw. De negentiende eeuw is een omslagpunt. Alles wat we zijn, waardoor we geen middeleeuwse primitieve maatschappij meer zijn met lijf-en doodstraffen, bloedwraak, openbaar geselen en kinderarbeid, en waardoor de slavernij afgeschaft is, is te danken aan negentiende-eeuwse be- wegingen. Doordat steeds meer mensen onderwijs kregen en de publieke debatten konden volgen, werden verlichte ideeen sneller en met meer invloed verspreid. De vrouwenbeweging, de antislavernijbeweging, de arbeidersbeweging waren internationaal georganiseerd. Voor het eerst werden wereldcongressen gehouden. De vooruitgang van de medische wetenschap heeft bijgedragen aan een mentale ommekeer. De koepokinenting, hoe fel daartegen ook geageerd werd, raakte in gebruik, waardoor de pokken uitgebannen werden. De cholera verdween uit de steden zodra er waterleiding aangelegd was. De kindersterfte nam in de loop van de eeuw gigantisch of door de verbetering van de hygiene. De uitvinding van het gipsverband maakte dat been-en armbreuken niet meer automatisch invaliditeit tot gevolg hadden. Alles wat vastgestaan had, leek te kunnen veranderen. Door de mechanisering en de stoomkracht konden er opeens dingen die nooit gekund hadden. Een schip kon varen ook als God geen wind in de zeilen blies, een machine kon meer kracht produceren dan honderd man bij elkaar. Afstanden werden bijna letterlijk verkleind door de stoomtrein. Alsof de tijd zelf snel geworden was, zo dichtte A. Beeloo het: De tijd gaat snel, de tijd der stoomkracht, die de vleugelen der winden aanschiet, neen, der stormen, niet te teugelen. Het is niet alleen het nageslacht dat die tijd een masker opgezet heeft. Om te kunnen leven tussen realiteiten en wensdromen moesten de tijdgenoten zelf met maskers lopen. Het was onmogelijk te voldoen aan alle voorschriften en idealen. Men kon een ideale huisvader willen zijn, maar de dienstmeisjes waren zo mooi. Men kon matigheid preken, maar na afloop van de vergadering van de matigheidsbeweging stond de cognac op de societeit in voile flessen te wachten. Als moeder de huisvrouw langdurig ziek in een kraambed lag, waren de hoeren aantrekkelijk. Je kon een cent geven aan een bedelaarskind, en een bedelaarsgesticht mee helpen oprichten, maar dat wilde nog niet zeggen dat je zo'n kind in huis zou nemen. De befaamde dubbele moraal van de negentiende eeuw komt voort uit het conflict tussen willen en kunnen. Ili raakte zowel geboeid door het masker dat de negentiende eeuw zichzelf opzette als door dat van het nageslacht. De verheviging van een bepaalde expressie of eigenschap is gewoonlijk het doel van een masker. Een masker concentreert de aandacht op een eigenschap. De burgerlijkheid van de negentiende eeuw is samengebald in dat masker dat haar opgedrukt is. En zeker, die eeuw was burgerlijk. Alleen vat ik burgerlijk op als een geuzennaam. De negentiende eeuw is een door en door burgerlijke eeuw, in die zin dat de burger zijn meest intensieve bewustwor-12 ding toen beleefde. Hij nam geen genoegen meer met de oude verdeling van macht en invloed. Hij wilde niet meer dat grote groepen armen, krankzinnigen, zieken, misdadigers buitengesloten werden en dus verkommerden. Hij nam krachtige initiatieven om een betere samenleving op paten te zetten. Om dit te bereiken moest hij wel een soort verheven masker opzetten. Kwam het door de Franse Revolutie dat iedereen opeens aan de slag leek te gaan om een maatschappij te creeren die beter in elkaar zat dan voorheen? In heel Europa wordt de wildheid beteugeld en wordt gebouwd aan idealen. Uitwassen zijn ongewenst. Er moet een verstandige, tedere maatschappij komen, die plaats biedt aan iedereen. Deze maatschappij moet gevormd worden zoals een gezin. Model voor de ideale samenleving is de piramidale drie-eenheid van vader, moeder, kind. Het kind is een samenvattend begrip voor nageslacht. De vader staat aan de top en is in alle opzichten het verstand, de rationaliteit, de planner. Hij staat in een liefdevolle verhouding met de moeder, die voor het evenwicht zorgt, scherpe kanten van de vader neutraliseert en de microkosmos van het gezin bestiert. Het kind is het product van de harmonie tussen de vader en de moeder. Vrouw en kind staan op dezelfde lijn, want voor beiden is de vader verantwoordelijk. De bekende dominee Otto Gerhard Heldring hield zijn kinderen in de gaten. 'De kinderkamer was mijn studeerkamer. Een afzonderlijk studeervertrek hield ik er niet op na, wel een boekenkamer, waar mijn lessenaar stond, maar ik kon het nooit over mij krijgen om daar, afgezonderd van de huisgenoten, te gaan zitten. Ik was te midden van mijn kinderen van hun eerste levensjaar af, omdat ik het als vaderplicht beschouwde in de huiskamer te zijn, waar zij speelden. Daar zag ik ze altijd onder mijn ogen, daar alleen was het mogelijk klein en groot gade te slaan en overeenkomstig hun karakter te leren behandelen. Ik had te dikwijls gezien, hoe het studeervertrek van de predikant hem al te zeer uit het midden van zijn familie trekt. Hij is dan, ofschoon vader, beter in zijn bibliotheek thuis dan in zijn kinderwereld. De kinderen hebben in huis aan hem niets, en is hij daarbuiten, dan leeft hij geheel voor de gemeente. Arme moeder!' De ideale vader uit de negentiende eeuw is aanwezig voor zijn kinderen, en betrokken bij hun ontwikkeling. Het gezinsmodel geldt ook voor de andere maatschappelijke instellingen. Om dit te begrijpen moet men wat goochelen met metaforen die in de negentiende eeuw gemakkelijk van vrouwelijk naar mannelijk en van figuurlijk naar letterlijk wisselen. Het piramidemodel is overdraag-13 De piramide van het harmonieuze gezin baar op de staat. De koning heeft hier de rol van vader, die wijs en verstandig met zijn onderdanen, de kinderen moet omgaan. Het vrouwelijk element is hier de natie, die zich heeft laten bevruchten door de koning om de onderdanen te verwekken. Onderdanen ontstaan immers alleen als zij zich deel van een natie voelen. De natie waarborgt dat tussen onderdanen en koning een evenwichtige relatie bestaat. Het beeld van de koning die als een vader voor zijn kinderen zorgt, is geliefd bij de dichters van de negentiende eeuw. '0 Koning! herder! vorst en vader, geliefd door uw vereend gezin!' zo zong Hendrik Tollens Willem i toe bij zijn kroning tot vorst in '8'5. De nieuwe massa-industrie van de eeuw gebruikt zelfs de gezinssymboliek. De werkgever is de verantwoordelijke vader die voor het heil van zijn werknemers moet zorgen. Het fabrieksproduct is hier de liefdesbaby van de rechtvaardige vader en zijn toegewijde arbeiders. Daartegenover staat de zwarte zijde van de negentiende eeuw, die verborgen moest blijven. Er heerst grote verwarring gedurende de hele eeuw. De mens is niet redelijk. Uitspattingen komen veelvuldig voor. De mens werkt aan zijn eigen ondergang door te streven naar een geoliede maatschappij. Verbeteringen brengen verslechteringen voort. Wie staatsregelingen voor prostitutie wil, erkent het kwaad van de prostitutie. Humanisering van de massale gevangenissen leidt tot trieste isolering. Meer loon betekent meer drank, meer macht leidt tot meer misbruik. Seksualiteit valt niet te beteugelen. Dit geldt ook voor de natuur, waar kindersterfte en epidemieen ondanks alle vooruitgang in de wetenschap mensenlevens opslurpen. Daar kwam bij dat de oude moraal niet meer voldeed. Welke veranderingen kwamen van de duivel, welke van God? Het Kwaad kwam in een identiteitscrisis. De oude moraal had geen antwoord op de dilemma's waar de nieuwe mens voor kwam te staan. Bovendien gebruikte het kwaad zelf een masker om zich in de maatschappij te nestelen, zoals Johannes Kneppelhout zo prachtig...

This report assesses 8 sites within the Bendigo hospital grounds which have potential heritage significance, as indicated by the Bendigo Heritage Advisor, Andrew Ward 12.8.93. To properly assess these sites, the historical development of the complex has been examined and brief inspections made of each of the eight sites. The sites are:

The Bendigo Base Hospital at Lucan Street, Bendigo comprises an area of approximately 10 acres. The hospital buildings are bounded by Stewart, Arnold, Lucan and Bayne Streets. The main entrance to the site is from Lucan Street and access is also available from entries on Bayne, Stewart and Arnold Streets.

En este particular contexto se trata de abordar el ennui en relacion con los modelos economicos surgidos en la epoca, principalmente el laissez faire y todo el aparato que lo acompana. The story begins in Paris with the love and seduction of a young and beautiful artisan, Anais,  by Henri, an artist, probably a dilettante; scion of titled parents. He deserts her,  and later she bears his child. A long time after she finds him in London, her child has died  and the story does not end well. Apart from the familiar theme of seduction and desertion this story also highlights another social evil. Trades people of all types often had payments for their goods and services unjustly withheld by their wealthy customers for long periods causing great hardship.

In the Preface to Little Dorrit (1855-1857), Charles Dickens declares that he 'became Little Dorrit's biographer' (7). However, despite identifying Little Dorrit as the biographical subject, she is perplexingly absent for large portions of her own life history, as other characters and events assume narrative priority. This tendency to fade into the background in her own biography means that Little Dorrit is not the protagonist in the most literal sense of the term-and indeed, the Oxford World's Classics Introduction to Little Dorrit deems the Dickensian double, Arthur Clennam, the text's 'central figure' (Walder 2012. "Introduction." In Little Dorrit, 1855-1857. Reprint, viixxii. Oxford World's Classics). In this essay, I enlist the concept of 'wound writing' to investigate how the perplexing phenomenon of Little Dorrit's vanishing biographical subject illuminates Dickens's own fraught relationship with the life-writing genre, which culminated in him burning his own autobiographical attempt. Indeed, Dickens's life-writing novels-that is, the novels which self-consciously foreground life-writing techniques-reveal a compulsive return to the wound that precipitated his autobiographical inferno, ultimately overshadowing efforts to solve the mystery of what a successful life history entails.

Christian missions played a central and increasingly studied role in the history of Western imperial and colonial expansion in early modern and modern times. In support of the evangelization of local societies, missions occupied key positions in society such as education, health care, technology and science. They commissioned the construction and management of mission stations, churches, schools, hospitals, agricultural estates and transport infrastructure, and consequently effected profound material, cultural and spiritual transformations of the evangelized societies. Missionary propaganda and knowledge production contributed significantly to cultural imperial imaginations and colonial knowledge regimes, and fueled notions of white supremacy, paternalist Eurocentrism and racism. Nonetheless the relationship between mission and colonialism was complex and multifarious, varying from close cooperation to publicly expressed criticism. Because of the complex historical connection between mission and colonization, missionary heritage is implicated in one way or another in the analysis of persistent legacies of imperialism in both former colonized and colonizing societies today. It can offer unique glimpses into the complexity of (post)colonial contexts due to the missions' mediating position between colonial regimes, industrial actors, supralocal religious structures and Indigenous communities. As Catholic and Protestant missions were imbricated so intimately into various cultural histories, they seem inextricable from the fabric of the grand historical narratives. Ser un buen poeta lirico fue obsesion de Valera, pero pocos de sus poemas son totalmente originales. Ser poeta fue la gran ilusion de su vida y su gran decepcion. A principios de 1847, escribe a su padre desde Madrid: «Al menos si llegara a ser poeta dramatico ya seria otra cosa, porque de 400 a 600 duros, siendo buena, bien puede valer cada comedia. "Tentanda via est": no seria malo tentar el vado, pero soy algunas veces muy flojo y desconfiado, y siendo, como estoy convencido de serlo, buen poeta lirico, lo que si no me da provecho me da honra, seria muy triste echarlo a perder escribiendo paparruchas para el teatro».

Non poteva forse immaginare che, con eccezionale continuità, nel XXI secolo sarebbe stato ancora attivo come collegio universitario di merito. Tra Sette e Ottocento, col passaggio sotto il controllo della casa d’Austria, il Ghislieri divenne un’istituzione fortemente legata al potere politico, in cui formare la classe
dirigente del futuro. L’analisi dei regolamenti, dei processi di selezione di alunni e personale, della vita interna ci restituiscono un vivace microcosmo riflettente, in cui poter osservare da vicino il cangiante intreccio tra politica e saperi, tra competenza e governo.

The article explores the meanings of dinners, parties and balls which the first diplomats of the Empire of Brazil in London attended or which they hosted at the Brazilian legation house. The study extends from 1826, when these agents began to participate in the social events as formally recognized diplomats, to 1829, when the mission's composition completely changed. The primary documentary sources are the London periodical press of that time and, to a lesser extent, private and official correspondence. It is argued that the participation in and the organization of such events, between February 1826 and June 1828, consisted of a process of seeking legitimization and integration by the new diplomacy of Rio, through the construction of sociability, hospitality and commensality. From mid-1828 onward, however, the dynamics of this diplomacy changed significantly due to the developments in the Portuguese succession crisis.

Das Musée de Sculpture Comparée wurde 1882 im Pariser Palais du Trocadéro eröffnet, in einer Zeit, in der das Bewusstsein für die Vielfalt der verschiedenen Kulturen nicht mehr nur auf Gruppen wie die französischen Fernreisenden beschränkt war. Dieses Bewusstsein war auch vor Ort in Paris präsent -zum Beispiel durch die Weltausstellungen. Bei der Weltausstellung 1878 im Palais du Trocadéro wurde diskutiert, ob die ausgestellten Objekte als kunsthistorisch oder ethnografisch zu bezeichnen seien. Vor diesem Hintergrund verfasste Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc (1814-1879), Mitglied und Inspektor der Commission des Monuments Historiques, 1879 zwei Berichte, die für die posthume Umsetzung seines Museumskonzepts entscheidend waren. In diesem Beitrag wird das dreistufige Klassifizierungssystem des Museums untersucht, das auf einem universalistischen Ansatz beruhte. Viollet-le-Duc knüpfte seine Klassifizierung an Epochen und damit verbundene Regierungsformen und bezog sich dabei auf ein Zitat von Victor Hugo aus dem Roman Notre-Dame de Paris (1832): "Jede Zivilisation beginnt mit der Theokratie und endet mit der Demokratie". Gleichzeitig hat Viollet-le-Duc in seiner Darstellung nicht auf Vollständigkeit gezielt, so dass am Ende nur die griechische Klassik und die französische Kunst des 13. Jahrhunderts als Meisterwerke erscheinen. Es wird erläutert, wie Viollet-le-Duc ein Modell konstruiert hat, das die Demokratie als höchste Staatsform darstellt, sie aber allein dem Individuum und der Kunst vorbehält.

Bara 60 år senare anländer den unge Olavi i Juhani Ahos Prästens hustru (Papin rouva, 1893) för att fira sommaren hos sin gamle studiekamrat Mikko och dennes fru Elli på deras lantliga prästgård. Olavi, som Elli har träffat flera år tidigare på prästgården där hon själv vuxit upp, har återvänt från en lång studieresa till Paris och är nu sysselsatt med att skriva en doktorsavhandling i litteraturvetenskap om den så aktuella "kvinnofrågan". Elli inser snabbt att hon har varit förälskad i Olavi alltsedan de för första gången träffades. Också Olavi blir under sommarens lopp förälskad i Elli, men är inte säker på om han hyser djupare känslor för henne. Maken Mikko, ovetande om romansen, får spela rollen av dumskalle.

Nel quadro degli studi sul triennio repubblicano 1796-1799, che pure non hanno conosciuto negli ultimi trenta anni una stagione particolarmente vivace e feconda, l'analisi delle diverse problematiche attinenti, in modo più o meno proprio e diretto, alla sfera della religione ha fatto segnare certamente progressi assai rilevanti, e comunque di gran lunga superiori a quelli realizzati in relazione ad altri aspetti di quel periodo. La presenza di due esaurienti rassegne degli studi più recenti, pubblicate nella «Rivista di storia e letteratura religiosa» da Samuele Giombi nel 1991 1 e da Claudio Tosi nel 1995 2 , ci permette di prescindere da un esame analitico dei più importanti contributi apparsi negli ultimi anni e di concentrare invece la nostra attenzione su alcuni nodi centrali del dibattito storiografico, nell'intento sia di fare il punto dei risultati conseguiti e dei problemi ancora aperti, sia soprattutto di sviluppare alcune considerazioni di carattere metodologico in vista dei futuri sviluppi delle ricerche. Importanti progressi sono venuti intanto dai numerosi studi che hanno teso ad approfondire il complesso, e talora contraddittorio rapporto stabilitosi fra le diverse posizioni religiose presenti nella Chiesa e in generale negli ambienti cattolici italiani e i principi di democrazia politica affermatisi con la rivoluzione. A questo proposito vanno ricordati fra gli altri i contributi di Daniele Menozzi e di Vittorio Emanuele Giuntella 3 . Il primo «si è maggiormente soffermato sul ruolo della Chiesa come istituzione» 4 , mettendo in luce la prudenza, e spesso l'ambiguità dell'atteggiamento assunto dalla Chiesa e dalla maggior parte degli ecclesiastici italiani di fronte alle trasformazioni politiche innescate nella penisola dalle vittorie francesi. By the logic of the authorial persona they created, Katharine Bradley and Edith Cooper did not write the books of lyric poetry and verse drama they published between 1884-1914. Bradley and Cooper considered Michael Field the author and called 'him' the works' creator. Their commitment to the joint persona is instructive: it reveals that Michael Field is not just a pseudonym but also an imaginative construct that enabled Bradley and Cooper's poetic output. It is useful to consider the persona as itself a creative genre, one with specific formal properties and communicative modes. In creating Michael Field, Bradley and Cooper show that they consider identity and authorship akin to the poetic genres with which they work: adaptable and malleable conventions available for reimagining. Bradley and Cooper revised inherited literary forms in their verse dramas, their sonnets, their masque, and their Elizabethan-style songs. Similarly, Bradley and Cooper remake inherited identity categories and reform subjectivity. Playing with form is one way for Bradley and Cooper to express what they think and feel, as well as who they are. This chapter will address why Bradley and Cooper created an alternate artistic identity, how their pseudonyms evolved to become Michael Field, and the ways in which understanding Bradley and Cooper's carefully constructed poetic persona can help scholars and readers understand their ideas about gender, sex, art, identity, and autonomy. It is clear that Bradley and Cooper understood the gendered terrain of the late-Victorian publishing environment. To be a 'poetess', or even a 'lady poet', is to be subject to gendered norms dictating what modes of expression are appropriate for a woman, what topics are seemly for her to address. Early in their career as Michael Field, Bradley explained in a letter to Robert Browning why she and Cooper deemed it necessary to be known as a man. Public knowledge that two women authored the 1884 dramas Callirrhoë and Fair Rosamund, Bradley averred, 'would indeed be utter ruin to us' because 'we have many things to say the world will not tolerate from a woman's lips'. 1 If they were known as women writers, they would 'be stifled in drawing-room conventionalities'. 2 Throughout their career, Bradley and Cooper insisted that reviewers refer to Michael Field as singular and masculine. 'Michael Field is always one', writes Bradley to John Gray, explaining that when reviewing their poetry, Gray should use '["]this writer["]' or '["]he["] when a pronoun must come in'. To be justly evaluated as poets, Bradley and Cooper recognized the need to be masculine and singular. Bradley and Cooper gain authority from their identity as Michael Field, who, when presumed to be a young male writer, is regarded as 'a poet of notable endowments and distinguished powers'. In his review of Callirrhoë and Fair Rosamund, William Watson argues that Michael Field's dialogue follows an emotional logic that defies the dictates of continuity. What might seem a fault, he writes, is in fact a virtue, 'one he shares with Shakespeare'. 5 This

This paper examines the transformation of language study from classical philological traditions to systematic comparative analysis during the 18th and 19th centuries, establishing the foundations of modern linguistic science. The research traces the evolution from traditional textual philology through the revolutionary Indo-European hypothesis of Sir William Jones to the systematic comparative methodologies developed by Franz Bopp, Jacob Grimm, and August Schleicher. Through analysis of primary sources and methodological innovations, this study demonstrates how early comparative grammar established linguistics as an independent scientific discipline by developing rigorous methods for language comparison, formulating laws of sound change, and creating theoretical models of language relationship. The paper argues that the empirical rigor, systematic comparison techniques, and theoretical frameworks developed during this period continue to inform contemporary historical linguistics and comparative methodology. The transition from humanistic philology to scientific linguistics represents one of the most significant intellectual developments in the study of human language, with lasting implications for our understanding of language change, relationship, and evolution.

The proposal explores the fantastic genre focusing on the domains of female water creatures. These beings appear in different types of storytelling and art, from ancient Greco-Roman and Germanic-Scandinavian myths to contemporary fiction. During the first period of German Romanticism, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué wrote "Undine" in 1811. This dark romance is full of mystery, wonder, and ambiguity, creating an eerie atmosphere. Fouqué also wrote a libretto for the eponymous opera, which was composed by his friend E.T.A. Hoffmann. The gothic revival that swept across Europe at the time sparked interest in national folklore. In 1876, Richard Wagner premiered The Ring Cycle, based on medieval legends and sagas. The first and last of the dramatic opera tetralogy feature three nymphs guarding a golden treasure of the Rhine. Arthur Rackham, renowned for his marvellous designs, was asked to illustrate both titles, which were published by William Heinemann Ltd. (London, 1910-1911).
In light of the cultural touchstones outlined above, I would like to contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the cultural tensions that arise from the juxtaposition of the Enlightenment's focus on rationality and the Romantic movement's emphasis on feelings and imagination. The term 'disenchantment’ was used by Max Weber in 1918 to argue that modernity had a detrimental effect on the unconstrained and creative dimensions, resulting in a loss of subversive potential to defy the status quo in the field of art, literature and music within a technocratic society. Today, the cultural industries encompass virtually every medium, transforming artistic practices into vehicles for commercial entertainment and consumption. Within this framework, Fredric Jameson considers the development of opera in relation to broader historical and cultural trends, particularly the emergence of postmodernism and the impact of globalisation. I conclude by analysing the loss of a rich legacy, whereby directorial appropriations reduce opera to a spectacle focused on surface-level elements, at the expense of meaningful engagement with its themes and musicality. This raises broader questions about the political implications of such transformations and their contested role in contemporary cultural wars.

Апстракт: У раду се истражује виђење поетике српске књижевности у књижевноисторијском стваралаштву највећих српских књижевних историчара XX века Павла Поповића, Јована Скерлића и Јована Деретића, кроз посебан осврт на њихова репрезетнативна дела Преглед српске књижевности Павла Поповића, Историју нове српске књижевности Јована Скерлића и Поетику српске књижевности, Пут српске књижевности и Историју српске књижевности Јована Деретића. Наглашавају се њихови методолошки приступи, сагледавање корпуса српске књижевности кроз области народна, стара, средња (дубровачка) и нова књижевност, питање жанровских модела, националне индивидуалности, односа према старој и новој књижевности, стилских аспеката књижевне традиције. На крају се указује на сличности и разлике у ставовима као и посебан допринос српској науци о књижевности тројице књижевних историчара.

Con el objetivo de promover la indagación de sus fondos patrimoniales, la Biblioteca Nacional lanzó en 2021 las becas “Juan Calfucurá” para la presentación de proyectos de investigación que tuvieran como eje temático el estudio de la historia y las representaciones de los pueblos originarios, tanto del territorio nacional como de la totalidad del continente americano.
Uno de los trabajos seleccionados, que aquí presentamos, fue el del investigador Pablo Arias, titulado Oíd el ruido de forjar cadenas. Vidas de indígenas en la Buenos Aires de 1880, en el que se propone historizar y analizar los repartos masivos de indígenas tomados como prisioneros en las diferentes campañas militares entre 1878 y 1886. En esos repartos efectuados principalmente para engrosar las propias filas militares o la servidumbre doméstica, Arias pone de manifiesto el sometimiento sobre las poblaciones indígenas a través de “un sistema para quitar la libertad a las personas que fueron arrancadas de su tierras”.
Para demostrarlo, lleva a cabo un estudio minucioso y exhaustivo de una gran cantidad de documentos que incluyen notas periodísticas, cartas, informes policiales y judiciales, entre muchos otros. Estos documentos le permiten presentar, además de una visión panorámica del proceso de apropiación de indígenas, una visión de las microhistorias que quedaron afuera de los grandes relatos. En ese sentido, Arias reconstruye cuatro casos particulares a través de los cuales accedemos a la experiencia concreta y brutal de sus protagonistas: los rebencazos, las violaciones, la evangelización forzada, el cambio de nombres, las auscultaciones médicas plagadas de racismo, la expropiación de hijos e hijas, junto con un sinfín de otras prácticas brutales.

Al iniciarse el siglo XX la sociedad española parecía anclada en el mundo del XIX; sin embargo, a pesar de las dificultades, el cambio se abrió camino, sobre todo en la sociedad urbana. Las ciudades más grandes alteraron las pautas y dinámicas de la economía y la sociedad española. La aceleración del proceso de urbanización, la expansión de la cultura impresa y los avances de la sociedad de masas, unido a las crecientes exigencias educativas de los nuevos sectores y empresas vinculadas a la cultura corporativa de la segunda industrialización, impulsaron la alfabetización; la significativa reducción de las tasas de analfabetismo femenino al finalizar la Guerra Civil fue una de las manifestaciones más relevantes. La transformación de los mercados laborales dio lugar a la aparición de nuevas profesiones con una fuerte presencia femenina, para las que resultaba imprescindible más educación y formación profesional, como mecanógrafas, telefonistas, taquígrafas, maestras, enfermeras, matronas, empleadas de comercio y administrativas, puestos que ocuparon las nuevas generaciones de mujeres urbanas, cuyos estilos de vida, mayores niveles educativos y ansias de autonomía e independencia chocaban con los roles tradicionales asignados a la mujer burguesa como ángel del hogar. Llegaba una forma diferente de entender la vida y las relaciones sociales, nuevas actitudes ante el trabajo y el tiempo libre, nuevas expectativas y deseos ante el futuro, para las que las jóvenes generaciones de mujeres urbanas ejemplificaron la gran transformación de la España urbana a partir de los años veinte. La Constitución de 1931 lo reflejó con el reconocimiento de la igualdad entre hombres y mujeres, el libre acceso a la educación y el trabajo, el derecho al divorcio y el reconocimiento del derecho al voto de las mujeres. Un cambio que quedó bruscamente interrumpido por la Guerra Civil.

The historiography of educational reform in 19th century Egypt is
driven largely by modernization approaches in which reformers are cast as
‘liberals’ and ‘westernizers;’ figures outside these paradigms tend to be
overlooked. ‘Abdallah Nadim (1845-1896), a nineteenth century social reformer,
experimented throughout his life with ‘educating the nation.’ He founded the first
Islamic Benevolent Society school in Egypt and authored some of the most widely
circulated articles on education and society of his day. In this paper we will review
Nadim’s life history, examine the educational terrain of 1890’s Egypt with
particular emphasis on girls’ education, and discuss a specific set of articles
authored by Nadim on Muslim youth and European education. With his
combination of anticolonial, proto-nationalist, conservative Islamic, yet ‘modern’
approach to educational reform, Nadim represents a populist – if neglected figure
in Egypt’s educational history.

This paper explores Gottfried Thomasius's impact on nineteenth-century dogmatic development, with a particular focus on his pivotal work, Die Christliche Dogmengeschichte. By comparing Thomasius's theological viewpoints with those of his contemporaries, such as Ferdinand Christian Baur, the study underscores Thomasius's unique contributions to Christian doctrine. Key themes include his engagement with the Erlangen School's emphasis on experiential faith and organicism. The paper places Thomasius within the wider context of the era's theological debates, highlighting his divergence from other prominent theological figures of the nineteenth century.

Este artigo consiste em um desdobramento da pesquisa de Iniciação Científica intitulada "Estudo dos artefatos têxteis decorativosentre o popular e o eruditona coleção Jerônimo Ferreira das Neves do Museu D. João VI-EBA-UFRJ", integrante do projeto guarda-chuva "Imagem, objeto e lugar: transitoriedade e coleções em museus do Rio de Janeiro", orientado pela Profa. Dra. Marize Malta. Neste recorte objetiva-se abordar os aspectos estranhos desses artefatos, tal como os estranhamentos suscitados por sua reunião, a fim de melhor os compreender individualmente e agrupados, a partir do olhar minucioso para a materialidade de peças como fragmentos de renda, entrecamas e colchas, salvaguardadas pelo Museu D. João VI.

Alfred Loisy (1857–1940) is a key figure for the history of Christianity and the history of exegesis. While his involvement in the so-called “Modernist crisis” and his role as a Biblical scholar have been the subject of several publications, his role in the history of religions and in the historical development of religious comparativism is far less investigated. A recent
monograph by Annelies Lannoy (Alfred Loisy and the Making of History of Religions, 2020) is now helping to fill this scholarly lacuna. In the present article, I will offer some considerations on Lannoy’s book, taking it as a starting point to develop some additional thoughts on the theoretical and methodological connections that Loisy has with John Henry Newman and
with Ernst Troeltsch. In particular, I will address Troeltsch’s “relativization” of Christianity and its relation to religious comparativism. I will also recall the pivotal debate between Loisy and Harnack.
