Sébastien Lecornu, France’s prime minister, resigned after less than a month in the job and hours after appointing a cabinet. Opposition parties and some ministers criticised its composition. Rivals, including the hard-right National Rally, urged Emmanuel Macron to call an election. Instead the president asked Mr Lecornu to hold talks with other political parties by Wednesday evening to develop a stability plan.


Israel deported more than 170 of the 450 activists arrested last week while trying to reach Gaza as part of an aid flotilla. Their number included Greta Thunberg, a Swedish campaigner. Meanwhile Donald Trump urged negotiators from Israel and Hamas to “move fast” to finalise his peace plan for Gaza. Officials from both sides arrived in Egypt on Monday for talks.
