Within the next five years, New York City's six major medical schools and four research universities will add between 140,000 and 190,000 square metres of lab space. That's enough to provide 1,000 new investigators with 100 square metres each, with plenty of room left over for core facilities such as instrumentation and computing. But even before those projects are complete, the universities and hospitals will have built something else, perhaps more valuable but less tangible — solid ties between institutions that once saw each other as competitors.

Both building booms have been engineered to attract world-class scientists, and help them work beyond institutional walls once they arrive. The core of cooperative activity in New York is Manhattan's Upper East Side, which holds the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), the Rockefeller University and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. These three institutions have already had some success in collaborations on research, training and housing. But whether they can together build up biotech in the city (see “Biotech dreams”) is another question.
