Samba brasileiro

[edit]

Chart listing ICs

[edit]

Does the project believe that chart listing content sourced directly from chart publishers (whether it be the chart itself or their own articles about charts), is OK for prose content in articles or just tables?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 23:48, 9 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

So, like, you mean a chart position on a Billboard chart sourced to the Billboard website itself? I don't see a reason why we would doubt the veracity of that content, and it is encyclopedic. My understanding of WP:ABOUTSELF would permit this; there's no need to demand third-party sourcing of matter-of-fact material like chart placement. User:Chubbles, is this a widely held editorial belief at this project? Is there some well-formed consensus in this regard.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:55, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I argued at Talk:Niggas in Paris/GA2 that chart vendors are not independent and that charts sourceable only to their vendors fall under WP:DUE and WP:INDISCRIMINATE (specifically WP:NOTSTATS). I take the view that "Key charts" are the ones that third parties have discussed; the rest belong in tables.--Launchballer 11:34, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As long as we're talking about WP:GOODCHARTs and not WP:BADCHARTs, there's nothing wrong with using charts to source prose. You've got to keep things like UNDUE in mind, (there's often no real reason to essentially narrate the chart section dryly in prose form) and you have to make sure that the prose is directly supported by the chart. (A chart may directly prove a Foo Fighters album debuted at number one, but by itself, not be able to source that its their highest debut, 3rd debut at the top, etc.) But there's nothing wrong with it at a core basic level. there's often no real reason to essentially narrate the chart section dryly in prose form I would say that the two paragraphs removed across these edits are essentially that.--Launchballer 22:57, 10 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, exactly. Like, sourcing-wise, there's nothing wrong with writing that an album hit #19 in Denmark. But UNDUE-wise, it's probably unnecessary to point out such a mundane national charting position for an album that did well on a global level. Now this one is interesting (although the song itself borders on horrible, don't listen to it - you've been warned!). "Ham the Space Monkey" may be the earliest song about an accomplished space flight, an almost forgotten space-age cultural artifact. Come and join in (but please don't sing the chorus) and let's try to both get in back in the popular culture section of Ham's page and work up a possible article. Thanks. This falls afoul of WP:CANVASS if you're clearly pushing for a specific outcome. Sergecross73 msg me 22:54, 15 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
