Administrator Elections | Instructions for candidates
[edit]Thank you for choosing to run in the July 2025 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.
As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:
- July 16–17: Housekeeping phase (we are here)
- July 18–22: Discussion phase
- July 23–29: SecurePoll voting phase
- July 30–c. August 3: Scrutineering phase
We are currently in the Housekeeping phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend this phase getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.
The discussion phase will take place from July 18–22. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). You are strongly encouraged to be around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.
On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your vote total during the election.
Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last for an indeterminate amount of time. This phase took approximately four days during the October 2024 election, but could take up to a week or two. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must have received at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose). Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

- One of my favourite moments in a film that depicts elections is the final scene of "The Candidate" - Robert Redford has just won election as a Senator from California and he looks over to an advisor and says, with a completely lost expression on his face, "what do we do now?". - I suggest you consider offering a longer debrief of your experience with the AELECT2 process, and if you feel good about it, discuss it with the nice folks at the Signpost for publication. I consider you one of those wikipedians who have sidled up to greater responsibility gently and not jumped into it headlong; you did it in a manner respectful to the process. The Signpost-published debriefs are a window into the sysop process for readers who had no prior ambition. Wikipedians might well make themselves personally familiar with the sorts of folks who volunteer for the custodial toolset. I regard your success as the process working as anticipated. Others might value your willingness to speak further about it. No pressure, especially while you're not quite yourself. But consider writing something down, even if just for your own reading. Guideline and policy news
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
- Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
Technical news
- Administrators can now restrict the "Add a Link" feature to newcomers. The "Add a Link" Structured Task helps new account holders get started with editing. Administrators can configure this setting in the Community Configuration page.

- The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
- South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as
All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.

Nasaiah Wanganeen-Milera
[edit]Hello, I recently left a protection request on the page of Nasaiah Wanganeen-Milera since he was linked with a move to another team. I do not know how to request for protection to be lifted so im asking you since you had placed it.
The reason I want to request for it to be lifted is that he signed a new deal at the team he is at meaning he is No longer linked to a move. This means my protection request is now invalid.

Please weigh in on the Talk:Rape_in_Islamic_law#Dispute_resolution_(third_opinion).
[edit]I have produced now four sources agreeing with Leslie P. Pierce. It is not an undue claim. Punishment of rape is obviously important in this context and is prominently included in the article itself: Rape in Islamic law#Prosecution of rape or Rape in Islamic law#Punishment of a convicted rapist. I thus propose this wording:
"According to the Ḥanafī school, crimes committed within the dar al-harb are not punishable by Islamic courts even if they returned to the dar al-Islam.[1] This includes war-time rape by soldiers.[2] Leslie P. Peirce writes that "The Ḥanafī school of Islamic law...tacitly sanctioned wartime rape by permitting the suspension of Sharī'a for Muslims outside “the domain of Islam”".[3] Neither the Mālikī nor the Shāfiʿī schools subscribed to this view.[3]"
Please weigh in on the discussion so that we can form a consensus. His whole argument is based on putting down Leslie P. Pierce as a source and I have produced numerous sources to attest to the claim now so it should be moot. John Not Real Name (talk) 13:32, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

- Why? You two still have not weighed in after I have presented the numerous sources that back up my point. As you can see above he is wrong and I am correct. Punishment of soldiers in the Domain of War during War-Time according to the hanafi school is not permitted and this includes if the soldier goes back to the Domain of islam. The other schools indeed do not accept this logic and would punish them. In fact he has gone as far as to admit it really as even he cannot deny it. He just insists that Leslie P. Pierce cannot conclude what she does for some reason (Even though it is factually correct that it was not punished.).
- Furthermore, having actually gone through a WP:DRN recently I am not confident they will actually serve my or any interest (I did not even fail strictly speaking. Not enough people showed up and so it was dead and I have to wait half a year to bring it up again.). I am not inclined to accept that as a solution. This page has been persistently targeted by the same IP vandal (whose IP address keeps constantly changing) who keeps constantly adding the same disruptive edits, and never ceases. I strongly do not believe a short-term semi-protection will help at this moment; the page needs a longer protection...about a year at minimum is my suggestion. You recently deleted a page I prepared because I am not extended confirmed. I wrote this article with the help of another Wikipedia user who is extended confirmed (We were both not aware of WP:CT/A-I for non-extended confirmed users). Since this is a joint effort (the other user has been helping me and mentoring me as I learn the ropes around here), is it OK if I pass the article so that she will post it on her account? Just checking to make sure it's not violating any other guideline, as obviously I'm not aware of all of them :-).

Possible COI/UPE and promotional content are also valid reasons to draftify articles. I hope you reconsider, considering that some of the articles have statements like He was a vocal critic of government policies that he perceived as oppressive or unjust

They have clearly mentioned about Oswal's founding father as Acharya Ratnaprabhasuri, who was a Svetambara Jaina monk. - For your information, many Oswals in Rajasthan follow the Digambara sect, particularly Basridas, so why did you add only Svetambara merchant community? I know Acharya Ratnaprabhasuri is an important founder, but we also need to reflect others in the Oswal community who follow Digambara practices. Wikipedia is an open encyclopedia, and neutrality requires including perspectives from both sects. please check i have also added: "while the majority of Oswals follow Svetambara practices."
- Also, please note this is not the right place to discuss on an admin’s talk page. The admin already told you they have no opinion on this content, and you should read WP:WRONGVERSION. The Oswal content was reverted by the admin only because the last edit was made by a blocked IP before the page was locked.

Such type of protection is bit new to me and I work on south Asian topics like mentioned below. Last some months I was absent from WP due to RL, so just I wish to update myself if any new rules are applicable on South Asian drafts or while taking drafts to Main name space?
I do have couple of drafts that would link to Sethupathis like User:Bookku/Indian sceptre and Draft:Ramalinga Vilasam palace deleted along with good number of other drafts too in my last some months absence as G13. (For eg. Draft:Ramalinga Vilasam palace is well developed but usually I write through extensive work in draft namespace over many months/ years).

- I do not know who Gary Cohen nor do I care what he did. The reason I protected the article is not because of content but because of conduct. Many IP editors were disruptively editing or adding unreferenced content, so I implemented a short protection period; we take unreferenced content very seriously, especially when it comes to living people.
