The Pacific Paradox: The Chinese State in Transpacific Interactions

The vast western Pacific has in recent centuries constantly brought shame and suffering to our continent, but today, on the treacherous ocean, enormous wealth seems surging with an irresistible appeal... The western Pacific is becoming the new stage of the world economy. Fate is presenting us with yet another golden opportunity. After centuries' silence, with a long pent-up hunger and thirst, the coastal region, the Chinese Gold Coast, is the first to hurl itself into the Pacific. 1 This was how the television documentary series River Elegy (He Shang), aired in China in 1988 as a climax of the "cultural fever" of the 1980s, portrayed the Pacific. Critical scholars on the other side of the Pacific may see this narrative as part of the dominant American perception about the Pacific. Arif Dirlik and Rob Wilson for example (Arif Dirlik 1998 2 ; Wilson and Dirlik 1996; Wilson 2002 3) made the powerful case that the discourses of "the 1 Su Xiaokang and Wang Luxiang. 1988. The Rise of China in the Pacific

Central to the Australian Government's approach to the Southwest Pacific is the view that Australia has a special role to play in the region. Enhancing Australia's leadership role in contributing to security and stability in the region is at the core of this approach. The perceived withdrawal from the region by the United States has heightened the importance of Australia's role and to a lesser extent New Zealand's, which has been Australia's main partner in regional peacekeeping operations.

Translating China to the Atlantic West: Self, other, and Lin Yutang's resistance

This article examines how the Chinese author and translator Lin Yutang challenged the misconstructions of China in the Atlantic West. From the perspective of the inhabitants of the Pacific Rim, the Atlantic is considered a symbol and metaphor for the union of the West (Europe and North America). Due to significant cultural and linguistic differences, China has frequently been misrepresented by Atlantic nations. Within this context, the leading translation theorist Lin Yutang conceived two key translation concepts, tongshun (通顺, fluency) and zhongshi (忠实, fidelity, faithfulness), as powerful weapons to fight against this trend of false recognition. This article analyzes Lin’s means of representing China by looking at (para)textual materials he produced. It explores how Lin combines tongshun and zhongshi to forge a space of zhongyong (中庸, central harmony), a space that reveals the unceasing efforts in mediating, through the translator’s balancing act, between his “Chinese Self” and “Atlantic-Western Other.” The space of zhongyong can be read as Lin’s creation that goes beyond the confines of strict “surrendering” and “withstanding.” Lin’s translation of China to the Atlantic nations therefore presents the possibility of transcending the limits of traditional representations, and offers a renewed understanding of the relationship between China and the Atlantic West.

Lingua Franca?: Francophone Scholarship On The Asia-Pacific

This post is inspired by my participation in the 2015 Congrès Asie-Pacifique, held in Paris in September, 2015. While English is often thought of as the international academic lingua franca, there is significant scholarship on Asia in other languages, including French. French-language scholarship on the Asia-Pacific should be valued, particularly in Canada – a bilingual country home to a number of French-speaking Asianists who publish important works in their mother-tongue.

This survey reviews the growing role and presence of China in the Island Pacific. As the late Professor Ron Crocombe remarked, in the Pacific a major transition is under way from a range of European to Asian influences. Many Western observers have viewed this rise of Asian, and specifically Chinese, influence with alarm, but Crocombe saw it as offering Pacific Islanders new opportunities. This paper first analyses the diversity that can be masked by terms such as 'China' and 'the Pacific'. Then it surveys recent literature on China in the Pacific and scholarship concerned with longer Chinese histories in the region that most recent commentators ignore and which question a number of their assertions. Finally, it suggests possible future directions for historical research on this topic.
