Iranian external operations DYK

[edit]

Hello

You reviewed a few days ago my DYK request on the article: Iranian external operations, leaving a list of points to improve it. As you can see now, it was improved by other users, bringing it to a level that matches your list of rejections. Someone simple rejected it today. I feel this to be very rude, especialy when before he did that, i asked another user who improved the article does he think it is now at the DYK level. I am asking for your help to undo the one sided rejection and see if it is now at a DYK level. Thanks. BasselHarfouch (talk) 12:17, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there; I did indeed reject nomination since the article needed a lot of work for it to be on the main page. I still find this to be true. There are still some errors in citation formatting (mostly first/last names), many sources are unreliable (see WP:RS) like citation 133, a blog post. I just can't approve the nomination, especially when it comes to the citations, due to post-1978 Iranian politics being a contentious topic. And I suppose this is just a critique of my own, but the article is mostly just a list of every alleged crime Iran has conducted in another country. That's fine, but I feel like the background and contexts of such situations should be expanded on; like, the kinds of operations Iran usually conducts, backlash the government has faced etc. The article as it is is very one-sided, and doesn't effectively show the full picture/scope of the operations. What sort of response has Iran gotten for these operations? Does it have allies/defenders/deniers? I feel like an article expanding on that would be far more helpful than a list (unless the article is intended to be a list, in which case, it should probably be renamed). That's my two cents. I don't think the quality is appropriate enough to be featured on the main page. Don't let it deter you from contributing to DYK though, there are plenty of other topics you can create a page for, or expand on. jolielover♥talk 14:26, 21 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thank you for one of the most constructive replies i read on Wikipedia. I will keep in mind the issues you have pointed out here and do my best to address them in the article. You two cents are very insightful and it's nice to meet users who truely take the time and give such constructive comments. BasselHarfouch (talk) 07:04, 22 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case Indian military history has been closed.
    • South Asia (WP:CT/SA) is designated a contentious topic. The topic area is specifically defined as All pages related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), broadly construed, including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups.
    • The contentious topic designations for Sri Lanka (SL) and India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan (IPA) are folded into this new contentious topic.
    • The community-authorized general sanctions regarding South Asian social groups (GS/CASTE) are rescinded and folded into this new contentious topic.
  • The arbitration case Article titles and capitalisation 2 has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case closed on 31 July.
  • The arbitration case Transgender healthcare and people has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case will close on 11 August.

Miscellaneous

  • Wikimania 2025 is happening in Nairobi, Kenya, and online from August 6 to August 9. This year marks 20 years of Wikimania. Interested users can join the online event. Registration for the virtual event is free and will remain open throughout Wikimania. You can register here now.

Autopatrolled granted

[edit]

Hi Jolielover, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 07:30, 9 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2025 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 29 August. The penultimate round saw three contestants score more than 800 points:

Everyone who competed in Round 4 will advance to Round 5 unless they have withdrawn. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far, while the full scores for Round 4 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 9 featured articles, 12 featured lists, 98 good articles, 9 good topic articles, more than 150 reviews, nearly 100 did you know articles, and 18 in the news articles.

In advance of the fifth and final round, the judges would like to thank every contestant for their hard work. As a reminder, any content promoted after 29 August but before the start of Round 5 can be claimed in Round 5. In addition, note that Round 5 will end on 31 October at 23:59 UTC. Awards at the end of Round 5 will be distributed based on who has the most tournament points over all five rounds, and special awards will be distributed based on high performance in particular areas of content creation (e.g., most featured articles in a single round).

Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Wdym? Large, uncited paragraphs or overreliance on primary sources are not appropriate; see WP:PRIMARY.
  • 3: A primary source may be used on Wikipedia only to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge. The paragraphs removed can't be verified easily.
  • 5: Do not base an entire article on primary sources, and be cautious about basing large passages on them.
And uncited content (like the Etmology subheading) can be challenged and removed.
And again, like I said before, you should just save it in your sandbox if you don't want other editors to help. Once it's published, I see it on the NPP, and try to improve it. I added the maintenance tags, yes, but intended to work on it (see the edit you reverted). There are issues with grammar, spelling, and tone. Also some issues with the legal issues subheading - no legal issues (currently described anyway) and possibly negative, exceptional claims will need stronger sourcing. Again, if you just don't want any of this to be addressed since you're planning to do something about it, don't move it to mainspace. jolielover♥talk 08:46, 2 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Live Documentations from notable Social Media accounts

[edit]

Hey there! i see you recently reviewed a subject article i made on wikipedia. while scrolling through instagram i saw a post from famous Remix DJ/Producer Opolopo from Sweden on Instagram in apost which says that B Major Mastered / Engineered opolopos latest Remix which drops in this month. I went to checkout B Major IG page and saw that another notable Billboard charting music producer mentioned him in a latest post where it shows him in a studio setting video alongside well know. South african Idols Top 5 contestant Zee Dyasi. It looks like he is co-producing and recording her album with the Billboard charting music producer Mothers Favorite Child.

I wanted to know is this worth a mention on his wikipedia or is it possible to quote it on his wikipedia? What blows my mind is this guy has only 600 followers and is working with all these notable people from all over the world!? LordOfTheReverts (talk) 07:34, 6 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, it is definitely worth a mention, however, typically reliable, secondary sources are preferred for articles. A primary source isn't ideal, but as long as it doesn't make an exceptional claim or says something hard to verify, it should be fine. Hi Joliolover,

At this AfD we had differing opinions on the page and since we were basically the only participants I thought we could work out a consensus between us. Moritoriko (talk) 01:00, 12 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Angermann

[edit]

Hello, Jolielover,

I was just wondering why you mentioned Larry Sanger twice in the discussion on AN about the imprisoned editor, Hossein Ronaghi. I don't see any connection between the two subjects at all. Can you clue me in on why you referred to Sanger here? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:45, 30 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sanger released his nine theses recently. Thesis 6 calls for administrators & check users to have their identities revealed as he believes that the "most powerful" users should not have the guise of anonymity when making decisions that could bring harm. I pointed out that revealing identities can be harmful due to at least five people being imprisoned for the work they did editing. Hearing about a new case of an administrator being imprisoned for bringing awareness to issues in his country made me think of the thesis, and how harmful it really is. I live in the Middle East and the guise of anonymity is what makes me feel moderately safe to continue editing. I mean, there's also the thing that I don't believe admins should face real world consequences for editing here - and they're not responsible for "damaging reputations", since I really can't think of an incident where an admin genuinely did such a thing - but that's my view. jolielover♥talk 01:53, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

story · music · places

Thank you for an interesting bio, and nice to meet you! It's also featured on Portal:Germany. - My story today is about a woman and her husband who played Bach's Sonatina for us (Rheingau Musik Festival, long ago) on an upright piano, and it made me cry, and I still remember. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:05, 1 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Carl Nielsen (FA by four colleagues, not me) is remembered on the main page! My story on the Germany National holiday is a song calling to trust the new ways, written shortly before the events leading to reunification. I saw a lovely Mozart opera production yesterday, in case of interest. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:13, 3 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot!! Sorry for getting to this a little late, I've been a bit busy and completely forgot! Nice to meet you too! jolielover♥talk 16:33, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome, and busy is fine, same for me. A completely different opera today, - there are youtubes of all three acts of the 100-year-old opera with a young Abbado. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:13, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]
